Confusing statement from Butch Davis about dismissal of sophomore

After doing some quick research that may be incomplete, I figured we would just throw this quote from Butch Davis out there for our readers to help us figure out what Butch is talking about.

Question

As a follow-up to that, you’ve had such an impeccable reputation. When you look back on some of the things that have occurred, do you question your character judgment with some of the people that maybe have let you down?

Butch Davis:

…..Probably one of the things that I wish we would have done more was maybe educate kids at a younger age instead of maybe waiting until kids are rising seniors that are potentially draft eligible, we’ve obviously started this year trying to educate the freshmen, educate the sophomores, because one of the players that, unfortunately, was dismissed from the program was a kid that was just a sophomore. He had only been on campus for basically 18 months. It’s an opportunity for us to look at what we’re doing and try to do it better.

Players involved in scandal thanks to Tarheelfanblog along with their class in ( ):

-No sophomores on that list(at least I think I have their eligibility correct).

Link to UNC roster to confirm eligibility is correct.

Was the sophomore dismissed from the program in a separate incident previous to the recent scandal?

It is hard to interpret exactly what Butch is saying, but it appears that this sophomore may have been dismissed for agent related activity and/or improper benefits considering he references the dismissal in relation to needing more education in the program(I assume there doesn’t need to be more education to not cheat since that is taught prior to going to college). It would be a disaster for UNC if there was a previous incident.

Maybe Butch misspoke and the player was actually someone involved in the latest scandal and he got confused on the time frames they were on campus? Did one of these guys transfer in meaning they were only on campus 18 months which would explain Butch’s confusion?

Or did we totally miss something obvious that explains this comment?

This sounded like it is worth clarifying since Butch raised the topic himself.

Thoughts?

Potential/likely explanation from Packpride on Twitter

@statefansnation I think he means Quinn. Educating Quinn when he was a soph. because he was soph. when he was getting the benefits.

Maybe someone that hasn’t been banned can ask the question at Idiot Central.

Never thought about it this way…but…it appears that all of the players held out for both agent AND academic stuff are upper classmen.

I totally understand the common sense of that on the agent side. But, isn’t it a little odd that almost all of the ‘cheating’ was going on from such a distinct group of players?

Don’t know what it means. Just a little weird. Kind of like the fact that something like 10 of the original 13 players all happened to be in the same major — Communications.

Would be interesting to figure out how many of the athletes are in Communications as a whole. I know that it used to be that almost all of the basketball team was in “African American Studies” back in the 90s.

I was banned within about five posts over there. (Seriously.)

I merely suggested that Carolina would have to fire Butch in order to fully clean up their tarnished reputation. I think that’s a perfectly valid assessment.

When they banned me, I was proud of myself. 🙂

On a side note, what does it say about a student-athlete that has to cheat in order to graduate…… in Communications?

  5. PackWolf82 10/20/2010 at 4:34 PM #

No knock on COM majors, my brother was one at State, and I took quite a few while I was there. But as I’ve worked with athletes at 3 schools, COM is a popular major among athletes. Just putting that out there!

  6. StateFans 10/20/2010 at 4:40 PM #

COM is a disproportionately popular major among football players at Chapel Hill.

  7. Pack78 10/20/2010 at 4:53 PM #

The above makes it sound like BD needs to take some Communications courses at the hole; also, how does his statement square with BD’s that unx has ‘strong compliance programs in place’-LOL.

  8. Pack78 10/20/2010 at 4:55 PM #

    ^Meant to say-DB’s comments…

“I was banned within about five posts over there.”

One thing I like about this site is the welcoming of dialog from all sides, as long as it is civil. Let them keep burying their heads in the sand over there in Cheater Hill. When the NCAA becomes their back-door man, they might actually wake up.

It will be interesting to see if and when BD will clarify his remarks. I doubt anyone outside this site will call him on it.

COM is also a popular major among UNC basketball players. I would imagine there is some communication back and forth between athletes about tutors, to include those employed and not employed by UNC.

    Just sayin’.

There have been plenty posts on PP (by those who have been more right than wrong) indicating that Comm department at UNC-CHeat is knee deep in this scandal.

I want to know who the idiot is who thinks BMFD has an “impeccable reputation”

  13. NCMike 10/21/2010 at 8:38 AM #

Not really sure what Butch is saying here either. Only speculation on my part, but it could be (because he states, “we’ve obviously started this year”) that he is referring to either sophomore LB Hawatha Bell who was dismissed in January for violating team rules, or sophomore tailback Jamal Womble who was dismissed for academic reasons around the same time. But I tend to agree that he was talking about Quin who was a sophomore when his problems first began.

  14. Texpack 10/21/2010 at 8:45 AM #

If you take an illegal agent trip during Spring Break of your sophomore year, then you’ve only been on campus about 18 months and the actual violation would have occurred when you were a sophomore. Perhaps that is the situation Butchie Boy was talking about.

  15. whitefang 10/21/2010 at 8:56 AM #

“impeccable reputation” was not a “reporter’s” question. It was the political technique of framing a statement like a question to give it credibility. In this case a friendly one rather than the infamous “are you still beating your wife” type.
