State/VT Live Blogging

Oh, you had best believe there will be a live blog today. I already mowed the grass and watched my kid’s soccer game, so that’s enough fresh air and sunshine for one day. Just me, the TV, perhaps a few libations, and all of you good people reading our humble blog.

I’m not going to be shy about things, either. We are better than Virginia Tech. 8 times out of 10, we would beat them. Let’s hope our positive run continues today. And if we cut out the dumb mistakes, this could be a blowout, like that fateful home 3:30 game against Clemson in 1986 (thanks for the memories, Erik Kramer and Dick Sheridan). This is our best chance at an ACC title since that season, so let’s take care of business.

3:36 – Pack will get the ball first. Need to get 7 and set the tone early.

3:38 – Nice start – 31 yards to Jarvis Williams. Great catch, and replay will confirm.

3:42 – Holy Lord, that was almost a disaster. But I think RW just picked it up.

3:44 – Like clockwork. Keep blitzing, Bud Foster. Doing that to Russell Wilson is just like tossing Brer Rabbit into the brier patch. He will drink your milkshake all day long. One hell of a job pass blocking by Mustafa Greene, too. 7-0, Pack. The exact start we needed. The exact start I expected. Folks, this team is good.

3:46 – Clemson’s going to lose. As long as we beat Florida State, it’s now much more feasible to win the Atlantic even if we lose in Death Valley. And we WILL beat Florida State. Count on it.

3:51 – Audie Cole sacks Tyrod Taylor, continuing his tour de force. I have never seen a player improve more over a single offseason than Cole. And the other team’s punter shanks one! Gee, it feels nice for that shoe to be on the other foot for once. Repeat after me: Go. For. The. Kill.

3:55 – Great play calling, but Spencer doesn’t run the route full speed. And the flag is only running into the kicker. Shit, that sucks.

4:00 – Welcome back, Nate Irving. And a Pick Almost Six for Barnes!

4:02 – Nobody outthinks Dana Bible. Beautiful play fake, and all Hokie defenders are worried about Wilson’s legs. And Dean Haynes is totally uncovered for the touchdown. 14-0, Pack. Virginia Tech is not designed to play from way behind. Cole and Irving have to be licking their chops!

4:05 – Great hangtiome on both of Josh’s kickoffs so far. Awesome.

4:12 – Audie Cole with more badass-ery, and the Hokies punt. Long field for RW, but who cares?

4:16 – Uh, it’s not a long field anymore! An absolutely perfect first quarter of football. Laying back in coverage isn’t working out any better for Foster’s charges. Like we hoped for – A STATEMENT GAME. Enjoy it. Savor it. Get used to it.

4:19 – The cats are napping on opposite couches, so I tried to get them to do the Wolf! Pack!! cheer. They were not amused.

4:22 – That’s the ugliest field goal make you will ever see (beyond extra point range). No idea how that wasn’t blocked. I think it’s 4 down territory inside the 30 for us the rest of the way. 17-0, but a bit of a moral victory for the Hokies there. They staunched the bleeding.

4:28 – Three and out. Tyrod Taylor is very athletic, but his instincts are for shit. Beautiful punt, but again – who cares about field position when you have Russell Wilson and our cadre of WRs? 24-0 sounds pretty good to me. I bet it does to Dana Bible, too.

4:36 – Nate Irving blows up the 3rd and short run. Hokies in total disarray.

4:40 – Moooooooooooose!

4:43 – Great play-calling, but poor execution. The reverse and the shovel pass each would have gone for big yardage. Instead, we have 3rd and 17 from midfield. Time to put up a deep jumpball, and whatever happens, happens.

4:45 – We do, and it’s picked off. But it’s the same as a pretty decent punt. Another good play call.

4:51 – But the Pack gives up a big play, then can’t come up with a 3rd down stop and hold VT to three. 17-7. Need to turn that into 24-7 before the half.

4:55 – Four down territory.

4:56 – Another great call, just a hair underthrown. Missing lots of opportunities here, and the crowd’s deflated.

5:01 – If there’s any justice, Owen Spencer is first team all-ACC.

5:03 – Don’t like that timeout. You don’t want to leave VT with any time left on the clock, especially if we are crazy enough to attempt a field goal in a few plays.

5:06 – Good observation by the announcer. State has been getting bogged down between the opponent’s 30 and 40 all season long.

5:10 – Just an awful 2nd quarter for Russell Wilson. Shades of UCF, for sure. At least we are spared another frightening FG attempt, and it should be 17-7 at the half. Very disappointing after such a great start.

5:14 – The Giants are laying down for the Padres and making all Braves fans very nervous. These last few seconds are taking an eternity.

Halftime – NC State 17, Virginia Tech 7.

5:18 – Just an aside, but is there anything more unrealistic than all the “Yay, we’re going to have a baby!” pregnancy test commercials? I would venture that 98% of all pregnancy tests puchased in the US are taken with fervent prayers for the minus sign. Show the happy negative people. Those are your target customers, damn it!

5:40 – Kickoff returned for six. Holy f-ing shit.

5:43 – Thank God – a first down. Need momentum back.

5:47 – Hokie DBs should try more coverage and less head hunting. And we get six on the next play. Na-ha (h/t Nelson Muntz)

5:50 – I will relax and be satisfied when the lead is up to 38-13. No reason in the world for it not to be.

5:53 – Much better kickoff. Much better coverage. Tighten up, damn it. No more drama needed.

5:57 – But the defense wasn’t listening, and a simple off-tackle play goes for 50+ and a TD. Two-pointer succeeds and it’s 24-21. Very, very bad football on those last two plays. It’s quite easy to flush away an early, big lead if you get soft like this.

5:59 – This is the first time since the opening drive by Western Carolina that I have been pissed off watching us play. We are a better football team. We should be kicking ass.

6:07 – A $#$@*&^$# field goal was NOT what we needed there. The Hokies have all the momentum, and their next TD would put them in the lead. This game is absolutely infuriating.

6:11 – East 20-yard pickup. I’ve started drinking now.

6:13 – Why the shit did we accept that penalty????

6:15 – We barely survive that stupid-assed decision, and it’s first down from our own 4.

6:19 – Just a terrible f-ing quarter of football. Disgusting, really.

6:23 – Everyone in the crowd seems to sense it. To go with some old school Red Hot Chili Peppers – “Give it away, give it away, give it away now…”

6:26 – The second half tackling has really sucked.

6:29 – We have absolutely laid down for Virginia Tech. It’s sickening. This has turned into last year’s team at the absolute most inopportune time. Why, oh why do we EVER get our hopes up?

6:32 – If you’re not drinking heavily, I highly suggest that you start.

6:39 – Unless we get a miracle, I could easily see the season unravel.

6:45 – And of course, multiple flags for TJ’s uber-dance heavy punt return. Can’t do anything right unless VPI just f-cks up. Maybe if their secondary falls down we can manage to score.

6:47 – Wow, is Les Miles ever going to get fired. He just gave the game away to Tennessee with remarkably stupid clock and personnel management on the two yard line (even by his own stupid standards).

6:51 – We are getting REMARKABLY favorable officiating. And holy crap, Tennessee had 12 men on the field for Les Miles’ dumb-f-ckery, and they get another play and score. Wow.

6:55 – It’s going to come down to a Hokie FG attempt. I would almost rather let them score and take my chances with the offense. But the offense has sucked as badly as our tackling in the second half. I am still incredibly steamed. Even if we win, I’m going to be pissed. We can’t keep gifting points and possessions like this.

7:01 – I loathe how we’ve played this half. Just awful.

7:04 – Thank God we screwed up the tackle again and let the WR score. And that he was too stupid to kneel on the one yard line.

7:06 – That 2-point stop was huge for those who got a bet in when the line was 5.5. Woohoo!

7:09 – And Russell completes the bed shitting. But don’t single him out – it truly was a TEAM bed shitting effort. Goodbye, signature win. Goodbye, program momentum. Goodbye, any scintilla of optimism.

Your Final Score – Virginia Tech 41, NC State 30. Congratulations, Pack. You really deserved this loss.

I’ve said all along that this was the toughest game on our schedule. Everybody had VT to win the coastal.

  2. tjfoose1 10/02/2010 at 7:19 PM #

    Yuck. Oh well.

Lost to a better football team today. Old problems reappeared. Learn the lessons. Apply them. Stay focused. Play smart. Work hard.

Do that, and chances are we’ll see ’em again. That’s the goal from here till Charlotte.

  3. wufpup76 10/02/2010 at 7:21 PM #

Hard to feel like we didn’t blow that one.

Oh well, hopefully they can put it behind them.

    It is Oct.

A disappointing loss to be sure, but don’t get too down about it. VA Tech is a good program that had a bad loss in its 2nd game, but they’ll end the season strong. It’s time to start thinking about how to win against BC and keep what is still a pretty good season going.

  6. JBS 10/02/2010 at 7:23 PM #

This State team really isn’t any better than last year. Big plays kill us as usual, play calling is terrible, offensive line sucks, and we drop passes left and right. 4-0 looks good until you realize you haven’t played anyone…

  7. ppack3 10/02/2010 at 7:23 PM #

We’re the same team we were yesterday.
Dissappointing loss, but shows that we can run with the dogs. We are 3-4 wins better than last year’s team, and I would have taken that everyday of the week if you told me that last January. Clemson and FSU are going to be the only games left that will test us as much as VT. We just have to continue to improve, and avoid letting this loss get us in a funk.

    Beat BC!

  8. tractor57 10/02/2010 at 7:27 PM #

Hard fought game where mistakes that otherwise aren’t all that important became important.
    Some bad throws by RW.
Not as good of a performance by the OL.
    Some special teams lapses.
    Some defensive lapses.

Some excellent adjustments by VT’s defense and offense.

Monday starts the preps for the next game. Good teams deal with losses and proceed. This team is certainly better than last year’s edition. Now gut check time.

  9. SaccoV 10/02/2010 at 7:30 PM #

PPack3, I don’t exactly see it that way. BC (next week) and UNC (end of year) both have something to prove against us, not to mention ECU having the ability to score (despite only 17 against UNC). That means that we have at least 4 games left that will “test” us (ECU would make 5). Also, given the clear fact that tackling is a key issue, it’s pretty hard to see any game on our schedule as a sure-fire W.

  10. gtspack 10/02/2010 at 7:34 PM #

JBS, is this the first game that you’ve watched all year. We are much better. Yea it sucks we can’t have a perfect season.

  11. Gowolves 10/02/2010 at 7:36 PM #

I still beleive in this team to do well this year. I do have one observation. If this is the they way TOB likes them to play then I dont like the trend. These are his words. We have consistantly giving up leads or played like we already won. That to me is a sign of not being aggressive and not that tough. We are getting manhandled and pushed around late in the games. I can’t stand this trend. This has to be fixed.

  12. whiteshoes 10/02/2010 at 7:41 PM #

Man that one hurts. I absolutely hate losing, especially games that we should have won. Such is sports.

I figured we would get burnt one of these days by letting a team hang in there. We manhandled Ga. Tech last week and almost let that one slip away. We have to learn how to go for the jugular. Even though we marched down field the first series I felt like Va. Tech’s pressure was going to catch up with us. Disappointing but life goes on….hopefully we can learn from this one. Lot of season left. Keep supporting the team.

  13. JBS 10/02/2010 at 7:41 PM #

I’ve watched every second of every game this season, and have been to every game for the last decade. We might be very slightly better, but not enough to make a real long term difference. If RW is off, we have nothing left in the offense t pick up the slack because the o-line is terrible. This has been true for 3 years. Our defense appears to be better because of the blitz packages, but look at the number of big plays we’ve given up this year. I’m not trying to be a downer, but this team is really not that much better than the last three years. Everyone we’ve played is down significantly, and I am not looking forward to playing Fla St, Clempson, UNC, or ECU.

  14. phillypacker 10/02/2010 at 7:41 PM #

Well, bad way to lose. Having your defense give up 34 points in a half. Wow. Here is something I really do not understand, What’s with RW and the jump ball drill? I lost count of how many times we faced a 3rd and 5, 6, 7, 8 that Wilson threw a very low percentage home run ball to receivers who are double covered 30-40 yards downfield? Can someone help me understand this? Why not do what you have to to keep the driving going instead of attempting something that has such a low percentage chance of success?

  15. JBS 10/02/2010 at 7:47 PM #

Most of those jump balls were thrown while RW was under duress.

  16. tuckerdorm1983 10/02/2010 at 7:51 PM #

we are getting better and continue to do so. I had us 2 wins (WC and UCF) and three losses. You can’t expect a team like VT with all the weapons they have to be silenced. In many of our games we left lots of points on the field and I figured that would come back to haunt us. Well it did.

  17. tjfoose1 10/02/2010 at 7:51 PM #

JBS – an example of one kind person, one type of fan, a determinant amount of knowledge, a set ability of comprehension.

The world is made up of all kinds of folks.

  18. NCStatePride 10/02/2010 at 7:52 PM #

JBS, So is your argument that during RW’s famed no-interception streak he was never under duress. RW seriously blew his wad here. I’m not advocating I don’t want him as QB, but his three interceptions were due to bad QB decision making, not the rest of the team.

  19. Wufpacker 10/02/2010 at 7:57 PM #

JBS: This team is clearly better than last year. They still have some shortcomings and some are similar to some that were present on last years’ squad. That doesn’t equate to them being no better.

And to say we haven’t played anyone is to ignore the obvious. Have you kept up with our previous opponents and what they’ve done since we beat them?

As far as the game and the team in general:

I agree with SaccoV. There are no gimme’s, not for this team. They’re pretty good but their margin for error is quite narrow. This would still be true even had we pulled today’s game out and gotten the win.

We got away with some sloppy play against GT, and to a lesser extent Cincy. RW was an equalizer of sorts in those wins. Today he wasn’t. Today was very UN-Russell like. A normal game from Russell today and we still win by 2 TD’s

But we’re just as good now as we were before this game. VT is not a top 5 team but they are no slouch either. Losing to them should not be embarrassing, nor does it mean we suck. The game was winnable and a few plays going differently would have secured the win, not that that matters.

What matters is WHY we lost. Bad tackling, poor defensive effort, untimely mistakes (and unusual mistakes in the case of RW throwing 3 interceptions).

It was inevitable that this was going to happen. Having it happen against VT, a team that is very efficient at making it’s opponents pay for mistakes, as opposed to a team that we might still have beaten even with a poor effort, is just luck of the draw IMHO. Other than the mistakes and the loss itself, the ONLY thing that bothers me about this loss today is that it was at home and that we had a sizable lead and SHOULD have won it.

Biggest thing of importance now is for the coaches to use the loss as a learning tool to help improve the players and themselves. This is still a pretty good team that can have a very successful season if they can correct the mistakes and learn to tackle.

  20. Wulfpack 10/02/2010 at 8:07 PM #

RW played a poor 2nd half, no question. Problem is, our defense was even worse. That was the swiss cheese D of 2009 making its painful re-appearance to CF.

Anyways, we now know we can hang with a solid team. I just don’t like the way we blew the big lead and I really don’t like that VT’s coaching staff owned ours in the 2nd half.

I think we are a good team, much better than last year, and we will have a good enough season. But this one I have a feeling will really come back and bite us, and we did it to ourselves.

We need to get up for BC. A loss to the Eagles (and it can happen if we play like that) and things can start spiraling downward again. Huge week of practice.

  21. Wufpacker 10/02/2010 at 8:10 PM #

    Oh, I almost forgot…

I fully agree with Dogbreath. Get rid of the red pants. I know that’s not what caused us to lose but I still hate ’em.

Red on white at home. All white on the road.

    Just sayin’.

  22. TAEdisonHokie 10/02/2010 at 8:14 PM #

That was a heck of a good game! You guys are much improved since last year. Just my opinion, but Tech was VERY lucky to get out of your stadium with a win.

  23. Wulfpack 10/02/2010 at 8:15 PM #

And as far as putting this in context of the ACC as a whole — it’s entirely way too early to make ANY conclusions. We are in the hunt, and I suppose that is all that matters. But nobody really stands out in this league, and Miami will be the only team ranked next week. VT, we know, can play when they want to. Clemson has some talent and should be right there. FSU may turn out to be decent. We’ll see. We’ll have our chances. That’s the beauty of this thing and it’s why you play the games. We have as good of a shot as anyone at this point, but today still hurts. Hopefully it won’t quite as much five or so weeks from now.

  24. 61Packer 10/02/2010 at 8:26 PM #

Just got back from the game, and we have nothing to be ashamed of. The defense was great at times and at other times not so good, but we’re way better than last season. Worst aspect is losing at home when we’re up 17-0, although it was to a solid top 20 program. It was good to see the kicker make the 42-yarder near the end that put us ahead, but we simply couldn’t stop their QB and were wore down at the end. But it’s not a division loss and we need to get ready for next week, because that one would be a much worse loss than this one was. I’d like to see some improvement in our short running game, but overall if we win next weekend we’ll be 5-1 and still in the hunt for Charlotte.

  25. gtspack 10/02/2010 at 8:32 PM #

My apologies to JBS for questoning how many games you have watched. I’m very defensive about our team, even more so after a loss.

I think our 4th quarter let down today is due to a 2-star recruit competing against a 5-star recruit (even UCF slightly out recruits us).

We are still in much better shape than I ever dreamed at this point in the season. I’ll take my chances with our coaching staff with long preperation days for the FSU(ESPN Thursdaynight) and Clemson games.
