I think Audie deserved better than 3rd team. Other than one game he’s had just as good of a season as Nate IMO.

Jarvis has been having a pretty clutch season too! I know Owen gets the big numbers but J5’s play has been crucial IMO. His catches come in a very timely manner. Reminds me some of Cotchery.

I’m surpised Russell is 1st team All ACC. Right now I would place him on the 3rd team.

I know Audie Cole played QB in high school. Was he expected to play LB in college or did O’Brien see something that others didn’t see?

PIR- i’ve wondered that too. Is their any video on him playing qb in hs that is retrievable?

Here is a nice write-up on Cole from by his hometown newspaper.

Haha but you have to ignore the fact the author keeps calling us the North Carolina State Tar Heels.

No way should Russell be 1st team but looking at the full list i’m not sure who else would be a better choice, Taylor maybe. Audi, Owen and J5 should all be higher, this year the passing number should be credited to the great WR group and not all to the qb.

His INT’s the past two weeks have been annoying, but he is still the better ACC QB available. I would have thought Tyrod would be #2, not Yates, but I guess he is having a better season than I realized.

I think I would put Russell over Tyrod & Yates. Who else should be a candidate for 1st Team?

  11. packplantpath 10/20/2010 at 3:31 PM #

Right now, you could say that Yates has had a better season and has better stats. Wilson is better, but the statistics this year don’t show it. Yates isn’t going to win the game for you. Ignoring the last 2 losses, RW can win a game for you. Wilson gets the nod now because we know what he can do.

I expect, by seasons end, Wilson will be the obvious pick and Yates will drop dramatically.

Don’t shoot me, but I would go with Yates #1, Taylor #2, and RW #3. Obviously there is a lot of football to be played, but that’s how I see them so far.

Right now, you could say that Yates has had a better season and has better stats.

You could say that. But IMO you would be wrong. Russell has more passing yards, more TDs… about the only problem are his INTs. But all his INT’s aren’t even his fault. When he slings it 60+ yards in the air and our receiver doesn’t catch it, and allows the defender to get it, is it really Russell’s fault? Some of his deep INTs are in that category. Some are not (like the one on 3rd down in OT against ECU). He threw that one into double coverage and had it picked. That’s ALL on Russell.

In the main statistical categories, Russell leads Yates.

Efficiency rating: Yates 154, RW 133

    TDs / INTs: Yates 11-1, RW 18-8

    Compl %: Yates 69%, RW 58%

    Bad Games To-date : Yates 0; RW 3

Russell, 1st team? Don’t see it that way, at least not right now. As much as it pains me to write it, TJ Yates, IMO, deserves to be 1st team at this point in the season. Only other reasonable choice is Tyrod Taylor.

And guys, a lot more should be considered that just stats. All-Anything should never be a stats contest. All things considered, with what TJ has done, to date, no question. He has earned the first team at the midway point of the season.

“I think Audie deserved better than 3rd team. Other than one game he’s had just as good of a season as Nate IMO.”

Many writers make their All-Conference selections based only on conference games. To do otherwise would reward players for racking up stats against FCS or DivII teams. With that in mind, though Cole has been solid to good in conference games, Irving has been stellar. I haven’t seen LB’s play from other teams, but based only on ACC games, 3rd team for Cole sounds about right.

“I know Audie Cole played QB in high school. Was he expected to play LB in college or did O’Brien see something that others didn’t see?”

Audie was recruited to be an LB. The coaches were upfront with him bout that.

Yeah, I’ve been really impressed with Audie this year. Just seems like he’s all over the field and right there in the thick of it anytime a big play is made on D. I think he beats out Irving as the second most important player on the team IMHO.

In his pre-season publication, Philip Steele’s 2010 ACC Team had the following breakdown of players per school on his top four teams: UNC 16, Miami 15, Clemson 13, FSU 11, Va Tech 10, Boston College 9, Maryland 9, Duke 7, UVA 7, Ga Tech 6, WF 5, NCSU 4 (Bryan 1st team, Spencer 2nd, Graham 3rd, Williams 4th).

No surprise we were picked last in the Atlantic.

However, the only selections that really count will be the ones that come out after the season is completed.

“Audie was recruited to be an LB. The coaches were upfront with him bout that.”

I know that the plan all along was for him to play LB at State. I’m wondering if any other schools were looking at him to play LB. His only other scholarship offer was Central Michigan. According to the article linked to above (which was almost painful to read due to the mistaken identity as the Tar Heels…shudder), he had a desire to play on the defensive side and played DB in high school in addition to QB. However, scout.com listed him as a QB/TE. When he committed to the Pack, the headline was “Michigan LB commits to the Pack.” When he was being recruited it was “Michigan LB/QB ready for visit to NC State.” When he originally committed to Central Michigan, the headline read, “Michigan QB commits to CMU.”
Not trying to harp on it or anything. I just like to see players who were not highly regarded succeed. It says a lot about a coach and the player I think. Then if the player wasn’t even projected to play the position where he’s succeeding (except by his current coach), it says even more about the coach.

Irving is a beast! Happy for him!
