Florida State week

It’s a big week in Raleigh!  NC State fans are still a little emotionally shell-shocked after the egg the Wolfpack laid in Greenville last week..but, the good news remains – the ECU game has very little, if any, impact on the Wolfpack’s potential bowl appearance.

NC State and Florida State have a little bit of a different/special feel to our games.  I don’t want to call it a ‘rivalry’ because I recognize that isn’t fair to FSU’s heritage and big games with Miami and Florida…but, I do think that the Wolfpack’s history of playing well against the Seminoles for such an extended period of time has bred a little respect for the Wolfpack program and annual match-up against the Noles.

This will be the third consecutive time that NC State will host Florida State for a Thursday night game to be played on ESPN in October.  We will have a lot of coverage heading into Thursday night to follow on the FSU-centric discussions our fans have already begun.

Coach O’Brien has kept it very close against the Noles in each of his three losses vs FSU as NC State’s Head Coach.  For a little pump-up…the following are a couple of videos from NC State’s last win over Florida State from October 5th, 2006 (also a Thursday night in Raleigh).  There are SO MANY interesting things that can be discussed from watching those videos; I will just leave it open ended and see what people choose to discuss.

Isn’t temporary part of the definition of flashes of brilliance?

This team has not once put together a full, good game. We’ve had quarters, halves, and 3/4’s, but never a full game this year where we clicked on all cylinders. I’m beginning to think it’s their fatal flaw this year and they are incapable of a complete team effort “A” game. If we can get that against FSU, we can win, and win it big. If we blink, FSU will win it.

“Dominique Davis graduated high school in 2006.”

And played QB at BC for at least one year.

“…how their defense was patchwork, a freshman QB, it just doesn’t make sense.”

Davis is hardly a freshman. He spent 2 years at BC, under the tutelage of Steve Logan. While there, he got significant playing time, including starting the last 3 games of 2008, vs Maryland, VT in the ACC Championship game, and the Music City Bowl.

He then spent a year starting at Fort Scott Community College, before transferring to ECU.

ECU’s defense, for those who might not have noticed, seems to have turned a corner after the 2nd quarter of our game. They lost 9 starters from last year’s team, returning only the 2 CB’s. They’ve finally started to play better.

Certainly no excuse for our poor play, but ECU’s defense is not nearly as bad as it was in the first few games of the season. No comparison.

Huge game on Thursday. I enjoyed yet missed not having a game last Saturday. Now it’s time to lace them up and get a win over the Noles. We owe them. Last one with the ball…

If Archer has State playing that straight 4-3 all night long we’ll get rolled up like the Romanian 3rd army north of Stalingrad.

BTW: two of those picks Wilson threw against ECU, which was lamented by a bunch of jacklegs, were actually decent throws. The 1st was a jump ball situation where Davis had 4-6 inches on the dbacks and a problem happened when the 2nd dback actually held him. The throw to end the game was the same. No interception if the 2nd dback isnt holding Davis on the slant.

Need a few calls, few turnovers and no Mike Archer trying to play it straight.

Are we legitimate, or are we (as Bobby Bowden once said) all smoke and mirrors?
FSU is pretty good, if we beat them we can say that about ourselves. If not, we still haven’t graduated into the ranks of the better teams.

Don’t get me wrong, I see improvement and like it. I see reason for optimism. I see players with talent that are going to get better over the next couple of years. There’s a good foundation there.

But I don’t think we’re ready for the big boy pants yet. I think the Va Tech game showed that quality talent across the board will eventually win and I think FSU will do the same to us.

But, I do think that we’ll get to a bowl, and that is a great improvement over the mess last year.

    GO PACK!!!

PoppaJohn, you ask a valid question (are we legit?) But it’s valid to ask that of FSU, as well. The only decent team they’ve beaten is Miami, and FSU clearly got up for that rivalry game. And Miami isn’t really all that great, either. But the Noles lost horribly to Oklahoma, who barely beat Cincinnati (a team we beat somewhat handily). I know, the transitive property can’t be applied in sports, but it’s the closest thing we have to compare us to FSU right now.

I know, we haven’t beaten any great teams, either. But we have pretty-well dominated many of our opponents, if only for the first three quarters of games. We even dominated VT pretty well for a half.

If we show up ready to play, I like our chances. And I’m hoping ECU is the last WTF game for TOB this year. If we play like that, we might lose by 30.

After the disappointing loss to VA Tech after leading 17-0 and the absolutely shocking loss to in-state rival ECU (must win these kinds of games) the FSU game is time to regroup and stay level headed. The past two (2) game were the proverbial Tale of Two Cities but with the same outcome: Get ahead by 17 and end up losing 41-31 and then getting behind by 21-0 and losing but there was a silver lining – State came back and did not give up. The game was there at the end but patience is necessary at times when what you need is a first down instead of going for it all: outcome = Interception-End of Game-LOSS. This is huge game for State. It will show how good the team really is and what can be expected for the rest of the season. It is a home game and is a winnable game. We have one of the best quarterbacks in the college game and an even better group of receivers who seem to get to anything thrown. They have come a long way. Big plays will decide this game. I think the Offense will do its part and the Defense makes step up another level. A loss is not the end of the season. My son will be at the game and I sure wish I was going to be beside him. Go WOLFPACK!!
