Embarrassment vs. Missed Opportunity

As I mentioned in the (accidentally unfeatured, stupid outdated Blackberry of mine) game thread, this afternoon’s game was a prime example of why playing the Pie-rats on the road in the middle of the season (thanks, Lee!) is a bad idea. State was unexpectedly having a good season. So it became even more of a Super Bowl to EZU. State has a chance to win the Atlantic, with a crucial showdown against Florida State looming next. So it became even more meaningless to our players.

That said, sure it was still embarrassing. Look at the comments thread or the message boards, and it’s clear that a lot of people were/are very angry. Fingers are pointing at the coaches and players, and frankly, with good reason. It was a horrible effort, from top to bottom, start to finish.

But it doesn’t really matter at all to the arc of NC State’s football season. NC State will still be bowl eligible – Maryland and Wake Forest are almost indescribably putrid, and State would have to play even worse than today to lose to either team. I’m not sure that’s even possible. So, there’s your 7-5, for the bare minimum threshhold. Even if State stumbles to a 7-5 mark, it wouldn’t have made us more attractive to a bowl to have beaten East Carolina in October.

Beyond basic bowl eligibility, this season will be special or not based on what happens in the three games remaining against Florida State, Clemson, and UNC. And that’s why I was so much more enduringly mad when we pissed away the Virginia Tech game (a loss that many more fans seemed comparatively OK with). Had we won that game, then beating Florida State a week from Thursday would put NC State in commanding position to take the Atlantic Division. Instead, we probably still have to sweep Clemson and UNC, and certainly must win one of the two. That’s a much tougher road to travel.

But it still can be done. Of the three remaining opponents who will determine NC State’s season, the only one playing well right now is UNC. The program that Tom O’Brien has owned during his tenure in West Raleigh. A foe that nobody will overlook or fail to get up for. Based on what I’ve seen this year, State’s “A game” should beat FSU at home, and Clemson on the road. So, it’s still up to us.

Perhaps today’s embarrassment will do a little good. No fawning press clippings to swell players’ heads. A stark reminder that the Virginia Tech loss shouldn’t be shrugged off as a “quality loss” or even worse, a “moral victory.” Let the team come out and play angry the next few weeks. Anger is an excellent motivator.

And most importantly, hopefully the shame of October 16, 2010 will help Russell Wilson extract his cranium from his rectal orifice. Yes, he’s got a professional baseball career to look forward to. Yes, he missed Spring practice. But there’s no excuse for a fourth year junior known for his keen intelligence and leadership skills to make reads and decisions like he did today. Or like he did against the Hokies. Or like he did at Central Florida. Notice the trend? It will be evident in the film that Russell Wilson and Dana Bible start crunching through tomorrow. They have the time and ability to fix it before the Seminoles come to town.

Now, we can only wait and see if they do. But nothing would be different had we eked out a win today. Except maybe some tough questions don’t get asked, at least with the force that they should.

Coulda, woulda, and shoulda. Normally those are the things I tell folks you have to know to be a hole fan.
SPring practice is killing RW. He hasn’t made this many bad decisions in his entire career at NC State.
In the pre-game thread I said we need to run the ball down their throats until they put 9 in the box. How well did that work when we did it and what happened when we did not? This game was pathetic from an OC standpoint. When your D all but pitches a shutout in the 2nd half how bout giving a little help there Bible?

    Back to reality!

Our defense is marginally better than last year. Still missing a lot of tackles and we do not have a pass defense. Unfortunately we have and will have trouble with teams with decent QBs. Let’s see FSU, UNC, and Clemson. It will take a great effort to beat anyone of those. I would say maybe we can beat FSU since it is at home. We should (if we just not play dead) beat WF and Mary. So probably there is our 7-5 season, good for those that care to travel to celebrate making one of the 35+ bowls available. I’m old fashioned and go to bowls only to celebrate GOOD years. Well, I do drive to the tire bowl since it does not waste a whole day.

I have to say I felt bad about this game before the season ever started. In state rival (whether you want to admit it or not), middle of the conference schedule, and at Greenville. I thought this had a loss written all over it from the beginning. But that was just a gut feeling.

There really is no excuse to fall down 21-0 in the first quarter. That being said the team did fight back and not only make it a ball game, but should have won. There are two things that frustrate me the most: 1) Russel Wilson’s sudden inability to see the field sometimes (or is it blind confidence that he thinks he can make the play) 2) On third down (short or long) we go for the big play way too often instead of just getting the first down and keeping the drive alive. Is it due to play calling; is it Russell making bad decisions? This has been a trend for at least the last 3 or 4 games. I like that we are agressive on offense, but there is a fine line between being aggressive and being foolish. I point out the last play of the game – we have the ability to make a first down without scoring, we have two downs in the bank, no time constraint, and we force a pass into the endzone through traffic?

This team has the ability to finish out 6-0 or 5-1, but it also could easily finish 2-4 or 3-3. We really need to beat Fla. St. and get some things worked out during the bye. Hopefully they’ll go to work this week and get ready to finish strong.

I woke up even more pissed off. Season is over, mark it down.

Now that is one author who sounds like he cried himself to sleep after losing to a rival. EZU? Really? Good thing you don’t stoop to things like “Cow College” like douchey UNC fans do.

Triad Wolf has point, how can you put this on the defense? They shut down this offense after the first quarter. My problen with this game is the offense. I can sit in the stands and predict 85% of our plays. Second when something works we don’t repeat the formation and play. Third, what happened to the swing pass out of the backfield that worked against BC? Fourth, can we not throw a slant or crossing pattern? Set up, great OC will set up big plays. They use play action or base plays to get reation out of LB and safeties. We never seem to have set up.

  7. albunde6 10/17/2010 at 10:35 AM #

Not to state the obvious, but why doesn’t Bible want RW to role out. I love to see him on the edge. One of the toughest situation for a defensive coordinator to defend.

  8. Statefan1998 10/17/2010 at 10:39 AM #

Al, I wonder the same thing, but he is not as elusive as he was two years ago. Is it added weight?

  9. albunde6 10/17/2010 at 10:49 AM #

He may have lost a step, but he still creates hugh problems on the edge. Works best when we are running well, but also great on third and short.

Consider the fact that 90 percent of ECTC’s players weren’t good enough or smart enough to play in the ACC. Is it really any wonder why they have a bug up their asses about playing us? And why it’s not a reciprocal feeling?

Yes, once it’s on the schedule, there’s no doubt that it’s the coaching staff’s job to win the game. And they failed. But it shouldn’t really come as a surprise.

And it does mean less than any conference game, unless we need the win for bowl eligibility, or in a lost season (then it’s nice for schadenfreude).

  11. Pack Mentality 10/17/2010 at 12:37 PM #

Every game matters. I know ESPN and the national writers would have you believe that all that matters is the championship. Well, that is bs. What matters is winning the game at hand. We lost an important game, they are all important, it is important to feel good about the game when you are having that post game beer at the bar with your buddies and not put everything into some kind of overall perspective and count some games as meaningless.

  12. wolfpacker 10/17/2010 at 2:39 PM #

Well, if it makes you feel any better…no one grows up wanting to be pirate or mountaineer for that matter. The student population attend the university out of lack of choices, hence the ‘beat state’ t-shirts and they feel much better when they beat us (n c state) and we could almost care less as we showed in this game.

They have one of the worst defenses in the country and we lost to them. Our defense looked much worse than theirs. I will only mention that our offense looked pathetic as well, especially against a team that is so BAD.

The TOB coaching staff is probably going to give us a poor finish to what started out to be such a great season. The coaching staff definitely didn’t have the team prepared for this game and it’s unlikely that’s going to change. They blew it and they won’t admit it. Poor preparation is the only thing to blame when you play such a pathetic defense. Sad thing is…our defense made them look good.

I think the worst thing that can happen to RW is to have a big play come early…….once RW hit that big play to get State on a role in the second quarter you could pretty much kiss any check down ever coming after that. Its when RW makes a big play early with a long pass…he just keeps going to it throughout the game…always wanting to get the big hit instead of taking what the defense gives you and marching down field 10 yards at a time. Its sad to say but when the big play doesn’t come he actually seems to settle in and starts to focus on the little things and working with whats given to him ie BC……plus I can’t just put that all on him yesterday as I saw on one replay when we had a 3rd and 5 and the camera paned out you could see 3 receivers on deep seam routes….wtf? its 3rd 5 bible? thats coaching and that needs to be addressed.

  14. tuckerdorm1983 10/17/2010 at 3:04 PM #

I think RW is trying to force the issue. He wants to play in the NFL and tries to be heroic at times. What happen to the guy that never threw an interception? Heck, let him take it and run and then turn it up field. Lets see Glennon in on a few series. Something is going on in RW’s head and it may be he is overthinking things. I don’t know.

  15. wvillepack 10/17/2010 at 3:27 PM #

Was out of town yesterday and had to listen to the game. Wathced most of it on dvr today. Russell needs to go play baseball. He can’t see down field over the line and now it is costing us. He is kinda like the home run king that also has the record for most strike outs. He got lucky and had many interceptions dropped early in the year. He has broken my heart two times this year and I know he will do it again. I said before the game that we should be able to pin 55 points on their sorry defence. Why didn’t we???

  16. JeremyH 10/17/2010 at 3:38 PM #

^right. he threw an long pass interception at the end of regulation, when all we needed was to get into field goal range. and he threw an interception in overtime on third down when it was four down territory. how good is our running game against above-average opponents? apparently not good enough. we have been exposed by both VT and ECU, both the imperfect storm and our defense. perhaps the only reason we thought we were better on defense this year is because our linebackers can mask the problems in the secondary.

  17. wvillepack 10/17/2010 at 3:38 PM #

Worst part is that I live in Greenville and will have to hear crap all week (didn’t hear anything week before cause they expected state to win). Most of the ECU football fans I know are also UNC basketball fans. And most of them are ECU grads… you know, grew up watching unc but couldn’t get in and had to go to ECU. How do you attend one school and pull for another? Is this just a Greenville thing? How do you graduate from ECU and pull for UNC. One guy told me yesterday that he loves UNC basketball and hates UNC football. He said they are two different things??? WTF. He said like Colorado Rockies and Denver Broncos are two different things. What? So I asked when Julius Peppers was there you loved him on the court but hated him on the field and he said “YES”. WTF. You can’t argue with ignorance.

  18. triadwolf 10/17/2010 at 4:40 PM #

Not to diminish everything our obvious issues, but our receivers have two dropped, perfectly thrown long balls. Catch those two balls and we probably win going away and are the tone of this conversation is entirely different.

Those of you on the gloom and doom train need to relax. Almost every team in the country has had what their fans would call a WTF loss. Alabama a week ago, VT against JM, SC this weekend… The list is quite long. We’ve got to correct some things, but those who think we’re going to lose the next 5 games and want TOB fired are just going off the deep end. We may lose 2 or 3, but I’m pretty confident that’s the most; that still puts us at 7-5. If by chance we do lose 4 or 5 more games, then Yow needs to take a hard look at making a change; I just don’t there’s a high probability of that kind of collapse happening. We’ll see…

“How do you attend one school and pull for another? One guy told me yesterday that he loves UNC basketball and hates UNC football.”

Most people are not like you, they do not live and die with each game. They don’t invest a piece of themselves in a sports team. It’s just not that important to them. Interesting perhaps, but not important.

  20. wvillepack 10/17/2010 at 5:07 PM #

smile102, you must be one of them. Excuse me, but sports is important to others besides me. Just ask the average fan at a football game how much time and money he has “invested of piece of themselves” in the team. NC State winning is important to me and I apologize to no one for it!!!! And I am not alone. And if its not important, what are you doing here????

A little ECU perspective on this game, plus a few of the comments. aside from the outcome it was painful for us as well. state should not have won–you had a “chance” to win, and we made plenty of blunders to help your cause. both teams had flashes of excellence–and flashes of disaster. all games are important even non-conference games. only losers talk about this game being unimportant. c’mon boys. i will admit this game is more emotionally important to us than you (from a fans perspective), but champions try to win every game. i never hear USC (southern cal–not south carolina for the truly uniformed) talk about non-conference games being unimportant–EVER. losers make excuses and use insults that have been around for 50 years. regarding the ecu student who is a carolina hoops fan….i work with a guy who grew up in ohio. he is an ohio state fan first and he went to another OHIO school. certain programs are bigger than life–carolina hoops, texas/osu football etc. it is what it is. it doesn’t mean the people are idiots or dumb. i personally don’t get it but i have seen it enough now over the years to at least know there are plenty of “those” people. bottom line: we do the best we can with what we have. ecu is usually competitive. we beat quality teams and try to off-set a soft conference schedule with teams from the top conferences. we handed arkansas the liberty bowl last year and i thought we were awful. still, a loss is a loss. this year we had more starters graduate (or run out of eligibility 🙂 )than any other D1 program. good luck the rest of the year–i think your team is better than what they showed. i rarely pull for you guys (close to never) but still prefer the wolfpack over unc, and–anything coming out of the state of florida! crush FSU! GO PIRATES! p.s. d-f stadium is weak on the amenities (CF, even an old CF is a quality house) but the atmosphere for a pirates game is fantastic if you enjoy the college football experience.

Triadwolf — you nailed it. Catch those two obvious touchdowns and we would have won going away. But if we hadn’t had interceptions, we would have won going, away regardless. Frustrating at best. But then again I wasn’t one of the ones playing.

  23. mak4dpak 10/17/2010 at 6:49 PM #

I saw RW on the news after the game, and he seems to be very cool with the loss, and seems to be no big deal to him. Maybe that is the difference in being undefeated and having 2 losses. If that is how he feels, then go play baseball, we don’t need you.

  24. wufpup76 10/17/2010 at 7:00 PM #

The wolves are turning on Russell WAY too much and way too soon.

He had a tough game, no doubt. But to trash him after all he’s done and proven is pure lunacy to me.

Complaints and criticisms are warranted for everyone, but to not want Russell to play is beyond crazy to me.

Highs and lows everybody. Thick and thin …

  25. tuckerdorm1983 10/17/2010 at 7:40 PM #

I just think he is better than what we saw against ECU, much better.
