Embarrassment vs. Missed Opportunity

As I mentioned in the (accidentally unfeatured, stupid outdated Blackberry of mine) game thread, this afternoon’s game was a prime example of why playing the Pie-rats on the road in the middle of the season (thanks, Lee!) is a bad idea. State was unexpectedly having a good season. So it became even more of a Super Bowl to EZU. State has a chance to win the Atlantic, with a crucial showdown against Florida State looming next. So it became even more meaningless to our players.

That said, sure it was still embarrassing. Look at the comments thread or the message boards, and it’s clear that a lot of people were/are very angry. Fingers are pointing at the coaches and players, and frankly, with good reason. It was a horrible effort, from top to bottom, start to finish.

But it doesn’t really matter at all to the arc of NC State’s football season. NC State will still be bowl eligible – Maryland and Wake Forest are almost indescribably putrid, and State would have to play even worse than today to lose to either team. I’m not sure that’s even possible. So, there’s your 7-5, for the bare minimum threshhold. Even if State stumbles to a 7-5 mark, it wouldn’t have made us more attractive to a bowl to have beaten East Carolina in October.

Beyond basic bowl eligibility, this season will be special or not based on what happens in the three games remaining against Florida State, Clemson, and UNC. And that’s why I was so much more enduringly mad when we pissed away the Virginia Tech game (a loss that many more fans seemed comparatively OK with). Had we won that game, then beating Florida State a week from Thursday would put NC State in commanding position to take the Atlantic Division. Instead, we probably still have to sweep Clemson and UNC, and certainly must win one of the two. That’s a much tougher road to travel.

But it still can be done. Of the three remaining opponents who will determine NC State’s season, the only one playing well right now is UNC. The program that Tom O’Brien has owned during his tenure in West Raleigh. A foe that nobody will overlook or fail to get up for. Based on what I’ve seen this year, State’s “A game” should beat FSU at home, and Clemson on the road. So, it’s still up to us.

Perhaps today’s embarrassment will do a little good. No fawning press clippings to swell players’ heads. A stark reminder that the Virginia Tech loss shouldn’t be shrugged off as a “quality loss” or even worse, a “moral victory.” Let the team come out and play angry the next few weeks. Anger is an excellent motivator.

And most importantly, hopefully the shame of October 16, 2010 will help Russell Wilson extract his cranium from his rectal orifice. Yes, he’s got a professional baseball career to look forward to. Yes, he missed Spring practice. But there’s no excuse for a fourth year junior known for his keen intelligence and leadership skills to make reads and decisions like he did today. Or like he did against the Hokies. Or like he did at Central Florida. Notice the trend? It will be evident in the film that Russell Wilson and Dana Bible start crunching through tomorrow. They have the time and ability to fix it before the Seminoles come to town.

Now, we can only wait and see if they do. But nothing would be different had we eked out a win today. Except maybe some tough questions don’t get asked, at least with the force that they should.

Here is one of those WTF loses that BC fan talked about.

Lets hope this had to happen in order to have the right mindset going into the critical part of the season. I can only try to convince myself that, had this loss not occured, we would not prepare with the intensity needed to overcome FSU Clemson and the rest.

Lets hope something positive comes out of this in the next month.

A loss to one of the worst defenses in the country is absolutely embarrassing…how did they do that? Especially ezu. I guess everyone has their app state / james madison moment…

I am trying to figure out what’s harder to accomplish…blowing a 17 point lead at half-time or spotting someone 21 points in the first quarter. The coaching staff FAILED to have the Wolfpack ready for this game.

By the way, have they not found someone that can kick field goals, I am certain there are plenty of candidates on campus.

I agree 100%. I guess I should say fortunately I didn’t get the opportunity to watch today, since I was sitting in Doak Campbell watching FSU play absolutely like crap and barely get by BC, a team we man-handled the entire game.

If we beat FSU (big if) we still control out destiny They have to play UNC, & Clemson, & Maryland just like us.

my prediction is that we would be 4-3 at this point. Losing to VT, Cinn and GT. I thought for sure we would win today. Well, at 5-2 we are not far off the mark of my prediction. I have us at the start of the season going 7-5. I hope we make it. We should beat Wake and probably MD. I don’t have a good feeling about the Heels.

  5. BJD95 10/16/2010 at 6:30 PM #

Aubie is up 44-43 over the Pigs. Still almost 12 minutes to play. Ryan Mallett is out, but his backup is playing out of his mind. If this one goes to a few overtimes, could break all sorts of scoring records.

say the following over and over again and maybe we will all begin to feel a little better.

“harrow, leslie, brown, wood and smith”

  7. BJD95 10/16/2010 at 6:38 PM #

Dude, if you’re thinking BASKETBALL will make it all better…you might want to consider drugs instead. 🙂

In all respect, i disagree 100%. ECU didn’t play exceptionally well, we just flat out stunk, pretty much the whole game. For a team that hasn’t beaten anybody nobody worth a damn, it shouldn’t take a loss to a very mediocre team to make some important points to your team and key individuals on that team. All games are meaningful. None are “less important” than the others. If you have mindset, you’re not a championship calibre player, coach, or team.

  9. BJD95 10/16/2010 at 6:43 PM #

It shouldn’t take that – but in many instances, it does. And we don’t have to be a “champions mentality” kind of team to win the ACC. After all, the runaway favorite in the Coastal lost to James Madison, yes?

Plus, I’m not excusing the way we played today, or saying we aren’t a flawed team. Just that it doesn’t impact the arc of the season. Would have been the same, win or lose.

  10. I-Like-Tacos 10/16/2010 at 6:45 PM #

Lets PLEASE not bring basketball into this. We are NOT unx.

State would have been LUCKY to win this one, even in OT. ECU was HANDING us this game, and we couldn’t capitalize. Congrats to them and their fans. They wanted it more, and got it.

That being said, I still can’t believe the refs took TWO catches away from us…WHERE was the evidence they weren’t catches? GAH!…and to top it off, where was the review for ECU’s TD in OT? Anyone with TIVO could come up with an excuse for them to see if his knee was down before he got it in…oh well…

Like I said, they won. Congrats to them. STOP playing them NOW. I don’t care what their fans say…we GAIN NOTHING from playing them…NOTHING!!

  11. BJD95 10/16/2010 at 6:45 PM #

Another side note – I’m still not at all sure how good Auburn really is. But their games sure are entertaining to watch. 58-43, 8:31 left to play. Wow.

  12. tuckerdorm1983 10/16/2010 at 6:47 PM #

BJD95. To be a state fan is to always have hope. WTNY or WTBB or WTFB or WT-whatever. Hope is kind of a drug. “Wait til (fill in the blank)”. Come on get with the program BJD95 this is what it means to be a state fan.

  13. BJD95 10/16/2010 at 6:49 PM #

Also, think about the converse. FSU played like crap today, too. Would you be more wary about them coming out loaded for bear had they lost today? I suspect so. I know I would.

So, let’s hope that works in our favor. And let the inbred, alcoholic imbeciles have their weekend of celebration. At the end of the day, they still have to live in and around Greenville. That’s punishment enough.

  14. BJD95 10/16/2010 at 6:51 PM #

And Mallett’s backup is no longer playing out of his mind. Sorry for the jinx, Razorback fans.

  15. I-Like-Tacos 10/16/2010 at 6:53 PM #

For real BJD. They are still ECU. It’s and embarrassment losing to them, but it beats being in C-USA.

I’m not quite as confident about the FSU/Clemmons/UNC trio. We played like crap the second half of VT and all day today. RW is way off this year and today was the worst I’ve seen from him. I sure hope we can pull of the win over the Noles. If that goes south, I’m not certain there will be much confidence against the Tigers and Heels. This FSU is looming to be THE game of the year for the Pack for a variety of reasons. No, the Noles didn’t look too good today. But we were 10 times worse.

  18. Wulfpack 10/16/2010 at 6:57 PM #

65-43 Auburn. Hard to believe basketball season is already here!

Wisconsin scores a TD on opening kickoff and leads Buckeyes 7-0. Awesome atmosphere at Camp Randall.

  19. BJD95 10/16/2010 at 7:02 PM #

Yay, Badgers. I really want to see Boise State play Oregon for the title. Or Oregon and Auburn. That game might end 70-63.

  20. BJD95 10/16/2010 at 7:05 PM #

And I agree that if we play at all like we did today, we will get killed by UNC, FSU, or Clemson. Hopefully, that doesn’t happen. I know we can play much, much better. And if Bible and Wilson fix the QB play, then I like our chances to actually do so.

  21. rtpack24 10/16/2010 at 7:18 PM #

Today’s game was bad all around. Play calling in overtimes with two sweeps down near the goal line were the two worst calls I have seen in along time. However, it is very apparent that Greene is our best running back and needs carries, he gets stronger as the game goes on yet we do not use him near enough in any game.

  22. WV Wolf 10/16/2010 at 7:39 PM #

I can deal better with losing to a team that is simply better than you are (FSU in the 90s) or losing to a team that plays a perfect game but beating yourself is just unacceptable. State teams seem to do that a lot.

Coaching, clock management, quarterback play, kick coverage, tackling, field goals all sucked it up today at one point or another.

And I’d like to thank HWSNBN for wearing me down over the years so that I don’t stay mad very long after losses any more. In years past I’d still be mad tomorrow, now I’m over it after a half hour.

  23. WolftownVA81 10/16/2010 at 8:04 PM #

^ain’t that the truth. Why is it we seem to regress as the season goes on?

  24. MrPlywood 10/16/2010 at 8:10 PM #

So it became even more of a Super Bowl to EZU.
So it became even more meaningless to our players.

Pfffft – I call BS on both those arguments. A well-coached team does not have letdowns like this. Heck, the players themselves should know better. Beat the team in front of you – that’s it. Simple. If you need a reason to go out and win, especially against a “lesser” opponent, then you shouldn’t be on the field.

Shoot, I want to win every freakin’ pickup bball game I play.

Beautiful fall Saturday. Packed house – attendance record, in fact. In state rival. Playing for a chance to crack the top 25 and to keep a great season going. A chance to get a win and then have a bye to prepare for your most important game yet in front of a national audience. No excuses. Not in my book.
