Current UNC Student perfectly articulates the “New Carolina Way” (update day 83)

Yesterday I told you about the Daily Tar Heel’s excellent editorial calling for Butch’s ouster.

Well today the DTH published an exquisite reply from a current UNC student.  I don’t think I am supposed to repost entire pieces from other sources, so I will ask all readers to now go to that link and read in full the student’s submission.  Then we will discuss it piecemeal.  Go ahead, I will wait.

Isn’t it fabulous!  It is perfect in every way.  The DTH staff must have laughed for 15 minutes straight upon its receipt.

Let’s dig right in.  After questioning “the functionality” of the “brain” of the editorial writer, the “Public Ivy” student jumps right in with this jewel:

Butch Davis came to this university to win, not to uphold academic integrity.

Well let’s see.  Given Butch’s 22-20 overall record, losing conference record, 0-2 bowl record, and 0-3 record against State, I would say that Butch has only accomplished one of these directives, and it’s not the winning part.  Now, with the “not upholding academic integrity” part, Butch has been a superstar.  Later in the same paragraph he continues:

If you want academic integrity, go to Duke.

At this point I became very suspicious that this is actually a clever Duke student writing a parody letter.  I still think this is possible, although I am sure that the DTH staff thought the same thing and checked out the author.  Later he proclaims:

I love Butch Davis, I love UNC football, but most importantly I love the combination of those two.

I don’t even know what to say here.  The cult-like following Davis apparently enjoys is remarkable to me given that he is not an alumnus, does not seem particularly charismatic, and has not won much.  Anyway, Davis apparently does enough for this guy to “love” him, apparently even apart from UNC football.  OoooKaaay.

“There’s still no definitive evidence of Davis being directly involved.” Well if that’s your logic, there’s no definitive evidence of me being an Eskimo, but apparently if the DTH can think it up, I must be it.

“I must be it”?  That is some top-notch Pubilc Ivy writing right there folks.  I started to write a whole long thing explaining that he might be closer with his analogy if the DTH called him an “Eskimo” after observing him living in an igloo near arctic circle year-round, hunting seals, wearing a big furry coat, and rubbing noses to kiss.  But everyone understands the point without me going into all that.

More importantly, Davis does not have to be “directly involved” to be responsible.  That’s what “institutional control” is all about.  We already know for sure that the Associate Head Coach/Recruiting Coordinator was “directly involved.”

The only definitive evidence is that this piece was worthy of the Nobel Prize for crap.

See, now I am back thinking this is a Duke student perpetrating a parody.  Seriously, someone about to graduate from college should really be beyond 8th-grade insults.  Also, this sentence is wide open to the ironic interpretion that the “this piece” referenced actually  refers to the letter to the editor itself rather than the editorial, thereby actually causing his letter to insult itself.  Well done!

My advice to the DTH: Support Butch, support UNC football, and re-evaluate your writing staff and your purpose on this campus.

I guess he thinks the purpose of the DTH should be to help subvert the school’s academic integrity for a football coach who has gone 22-20.

Let me say one more thing to contextualize (is that a word?) this UNC student’s letter to the editor.  I would argue that this letter is a direct result of the ridiculous positions the UNC leadership has taken since the Butch bombshells started dropping.  Whether they mean to or not, Thorp and Baddour are sending a message to the world IDENTICAL to that communicated by the author of this absurd letter to the editor, which could just as easily be a parody.   Think about that.

“I don’t even know what to say here. The cult-like following Davis apparently enjoys is remarkable to me given that he is not an alumnus, does not seem particularly charismatic, and has not won much.”

Plus, Butch openly hates Carolina Blue.

that record will be 14 – 15 after they strip the games played last season.

This is classic. Each night I think, “this is probably the dumbest thing that could possibly happen.” Then, the next night, something better!! Can’t wait to see what tomorrow holds.

So umm, winner winner chicken dinner?

Mr Webber, what you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Have you noticed that the Native American and the team are now wearing baby blue as opposed to Duke blue. I guess being on the hot seat can make a man stop openly wearing the colors of his rival because he perceives the color of his employer to be very limp wristed and fairylike.

of course its the guy that went to my highschool and has mutual friends. Damnit.

That explains it. He’s a misplaced meathead looking for an outlet.

“After being a dominant offensive lineman in high school, anchoring one of the best teams in the state of North Carolina, Darren looked to fulfill the void in his life for a contact sport upon coming to Carolina. He found it in UNC Rugby and says his favorite part is getting to tackle people who are half his size.”

Wow, can’t make this stuff up.

And this little gem from the link provided by MrPerfectionest:

““This project was truly amazing to learn about the amount of research, time and effort it takes to make something as seemingly simple as a cookbook,” said Darren Webber ‘11, a UNC-Chapel Hill health policy and economics double major…”

From looking at his picture, there’s a joke in there somewhere.

Mr.Perfectionist, did you see the irony in that chunky kid being involved in a project about obesity?

I took the letter to the editor as a sarcastic “tongue in cheek” response…so you think this guy was serious when he wrote it?

  13. highstick 10/05/2010 at 11:06 PM #

The heck with those doctors getting and education…we need to be winning football games!

Sure hope this fellow never ends up being a hospital CEO!

Not sure if this has been discussed…but check out BobLee’s recent post…just skip to the last section unless you are a fan of NCIS: http://www.bobleesays.com/Blogs/BobLee-Says/October-2010/Leroy-Jethro9-Gibbs-Is-No-Butch.aspx

…and I respect why he is saying the stuff he’s saying (now). As with Lee Pace, Holden and I can differ without it bruising our friendship. It’s how emotionally stable adults behave.

Huumm, BobLee snuck in (now). Is he sending a cryptic message ? Ya just never know with BobLee. That boy’s an odd duck. Quack.

    was he being ironic?

  16. wolfpack63 10/06/2010 at 1:31 AM #

Hey guys first time poster. I went to high school with Darren Weber. He is a nice guy even though what he said was completely and utterly wrong. So please don’t rat on him that much guys. I did play football with him and he was one of the easiest guys to get along with. But yes what he said was wrong.

  17. PackerInRussia 10/06/2010 at 1:31 AM #

Wow, all these years I didn’t even know that they had a Nobel Prize for crap.

I loved that letter. Whether sincere or sarcastic, it was a great piece.

In 1984 terms, The Ministry of Plenty (Erskine and friends), Ministry of Peace (Butch and his minions), and the Ministry of Love (Holden) are all performing their roles to a T. The Ministry of Truth (DTH) is the lone wolf in this whole thing. They need to know their role and get in line with the establishment. Look for an emotionless, brainwashed piece to be written stating that they have changed their view and for the first time realize that they too love Big Brother…I mean Butch Davis.

  18. easyjet7 10/06/2010 at 6:22 AM #

This letter is ridiculous, at least most of the comments from on the DTH website condemned it, everyday brings a new black eye for Carolina Football

@WV Wolf: Very fitting. “Butch, your question is, what is business ethics?”

All I know is there are about 294 friends clicking “Remove Friend” right now.

  22. Pack Mentality 10/06/2010 at 8:01 AM #

The DTH knows exactly what they are doing and chose this as the representative sample of the butch supporters, whether it was written in jest or not. And the DTH is correct, I haven’t heard any Butch supporters that are not in the exact same mindframe as this author.

  23. Old MacDonald 10/06/2010 at 8:12 AM #

I think he is being serious. It is not written well enough to be satire. Anyone who writes “I must be it” is no Jonathan Swift.

  24. wvillepack 10/06/2010 at 8:22 AM #

Here’s the deal. Butch brought hope and promise to a UNC football program desperate to get off the ground. He has taken them to back to back bowl games and hope for this year was very high. Butch has recruited very well and has (had?) a bright future at UNC. UNC loves Butch. If he had a string of losing records, no bowls and no hope for future…he would already have been fired. That simple. UNC officials, fans, and students know whats going on. But firing Butch would be a death blow to the football program that would take years to recover from.

  25. Wufpacker 10/06/2010 at 8:26 AM #

^ I think that ship has sailed already.

“…his favorite part is getting to tackle people who are half his size…”

So his sense of balance and fair play is what draws him to “love” Butch Davis, apparently. And my guess is that he can’t catch MOST people who are half his size.

Pack Mentality: Doesn’t one have to have a mind in order to have a mindframe?
