Charlotte Observer Editorial: UNC Must Find Way to Regain Control

Finally! The Charlotte Observer provides a sign of life that they are at least aware of the scandal in Chapel Hill. Maybe soon they will learn how to run more news stories about this situation somewhere other than page 6. This isn’t nearly as scathing as I would have expected, but at Day 90 of the scandal at least they are finally focusing some energy on it.

Regaining public trust in UNC and repairing its image as a model of conduct seems likely to require the dismissal of head football coach Butch Davis, who hired an assistant coach with close personal and professional ties to a well-known sports agent but who failed to insist on a full inquiry to make sure those ties had been severed before his hiring. And it may also require the dismissal of longtime athletic director Dick Baddour, a key figure in Davis’ hiring under then-Chancellor James Moeser and who evidently perceives no loss of control.

They have a point.

TO MY FRIENDS THAT ARE HEELS FANS

We humble N.C. state fans have had to endure great suffering. No ACC champs in anything for a hell of a long time. Of course no NCAA champs in anything (except bass fishing). We are not pissed if we fail to reach the sweet sixteen. Hell all we want is to reach the sweet sixty-four or the Not Important Tourney. We had Mr. Rivers and beat Notre Dame. Other than an occasional win in football against the Heels and FSU we floundered in the doldrums of 3-5 in the ACC. Hey we did go 6-6 in football a few years back and we were beside ourselves. We did go to the finals in the ACC tourney in basketball a few years back. These result would appall you, yet we were overjoyed. Year after year we get hammered by Duke, UNC and Wake in basketball. Yeah we win a few times. We trudge on in faith and hope.
So my friends that are Heels fans. So what if your football program is going in the crapper. This will give you a chance to develop some character. You win so much in basketball that you expect to be in the final four every year. I can’t count the number of times you were preseason top five in basketball. You barely have room to hang all the banners in the Dean Dome. You get the cream of the cream of talent in basketball. They come to you. What do you care about football. Yeah Mack Brown came and you thought you were pretty good until FSU kicked your behinds and Mack left. You got greedy and hired a “win at all costs coach”. Now you are paying the price. Try walking a mile in the Wolfpack Fan’s shoes. A little humility will help you in life. You have so much over there in Chapel Hill. A famous person once said “I felt sorry for myself because my school only won NCAA championships in basketball and sucked in football until I met a N.C. State fan”

Maybe some of the BOT (or even the system BOG) if the issue of paying players leads there.

There seems to be a total lack of institutional control.

While I’m typing this Frank Deford (sp?) is on NPR saying “everybody does it”

Does the General Assembly believe the Board of Governors has ensured the University President is acting in good faith to ensure the athletic department is reflecting the values of the State, or should the legislature be impeached en masse?

  9. LifeLongWolf 10/13/2010 at 9:27 AM #

^zwolf: I think you are being sarcastic and saying that it’s unreasonable to demand consequences for the higher administrators at UNC. Is that correct? Or am I just not getting it?

BD needs to go because he had direct responsibility. Even if he didn’t know, it’s his business to know and he has to go.

Baddour (sp?) deserves some negative consequences due to the way he has handled this situation. If UNC is really the ‘public Ivy’ they claim to be, he should have quickly and conclusively nipped this in the bud. Also, he should have created an Athletic Dept. that had policies and procedures in place to stop this.

Thorp is similar to Baddour. Even though he may not bear any responsibility for stopping this in the first place, he should have handled it differently. Baddour and Thorp have created a situation where it smells like an attempt to cover-up the problem rather than just coming clean. Google “Watergate” for more information on how not to act when you get caught.

As others have postulated, I suspect that Baddour and Thorp are handling things in the way they are due to monetary concerns revolving around BD’s contract. I find it hard to believe they are really that ignorant.

Maybe I’m misinterpreting your comments, and if so, I apologize.

And just for the record, I believe that BD most likely had full and intimate knowledge of what Blake was doing, and probably had a good idea of what the players were doing. I understand the principles of ‘plausible deniability’, and I’ll bet we’ll never prove it, but that’s what I think.

Can you really blame Dick Baddour for engaging in damage control given the “buck” ultimately stops at his desk?

If you’re a 75% goner over an issue, at least try to defend yourself.

That said, who will end up being Carolina football’s version of “Les Robinson” once Butch Davis leaves? Bobby Johnson of Vanderbilt is retired.

This is a very good editoral by Observer. Finally the point is being made that the truth is being uncovered by outside sources not UNC. Baylor is under NCAA investigation but they first self reproted the violations unlike UNC which was contacted by the NCAA first.

UNC appealed the first two suspensions. Then applied for reinstatement for the two players later declared permanently ineligible by the NCAA. Unthinkable that UNC could be that far off the mark in their own investigation. Observer implies but falls short of uttering the term “cover up” although they are clearly correct in telling it like it is that UNC has not been honest with the public. Certainly has not been proactive in self reporting or implementing self imposed penalties.

  12. beer03 10/13/2010 at 10:17 AM #

“…depicts an administration unprepared to prevent violations and at a loss to deal with negative publicity.”

Don’t know why, but this phrase is the one that caught my attention. It seems absolutely true the folks at UNC assume, without much thought, that they will receive favorable consideration from public entities in NC. One of the greatest possibilities of this particular can of worms is that this support may not be automatically forthcoming in the future (a guy can hope).

“likely to”, “may also require”, “appear to be” … They hedged.

It’s a commendable effort, considering the usually blatant bias on the CO’s sports desk and Op-Ed board, but it just isn’t as pointed as it needs to be.

  14. Hungwolf 10/13/2010 at 1:44 PM #

Maybe UNX fans will start to crasp how bad things really are when your athletic program’s mess is the editoral and editoral cartoon!
