WCU vs. NC State – Semi-Live Blogging

Hello, everyone! I am cooking dinner and this is my first rodeo with ESPN3.com’s streaming video feed.

6:05 – Catamounts start inside their own 15, but pop off a 20 yard run on their first play. I think we’ve seen this movie before. Second play (QB keeper) picks up only nine!

6:10 – WCU converts on 4th and short. Just like last year, we bite on any misdirection or ball fake.

6:12 – Holy f-cking shit. That’s all I’ve got folks. It’s quite possible we suck even more on defense this year!

6:15 – In case you’re wondering (and I know you are!), tonight’s dinner menu is roasted pork tenderloin with saffron rice and baby carrots. Not too bad for a Dad on solo duty.

6:17 – Three and out. I need a shortcut key for “Holy f-cking shit.”

6:18 – But alas, the Catamounts dropped the punt. Wolfpack in field goal range. Woohoo!!!!

6:19 – First play post-turnover is a 26-yard TD pass to TJ Graham. Hopefully WCU muffs the kickoff so we don’t see more of our “defense.”

6:23 – Scoreboard gremlins. That didn’t take long.

6:27 – Things you won’t learn from listening on the radio. Western’s coach is really fat. Almost Mangino fat. Another 8 yard run up the middle. Holy f-cking shit.

6:29 – Dumb bastards tried to throw. On first and third down. Now is the time on Sphrockets when they punt. Pack ball near their own 30. Virtual TV timeout, I go to check on my rice.

6:32 – Owen Spencer makes a routine catch! Don’t see that too often.

6:34 – Dean Haynes does not look very good. Against a weak 1-AA defense.

6:35 – That fumble will be overturned after replay review. Despite what the D-list announcers say, it was not close at all.

6:41 – Another six points for TJ Graham. So, we have maybe two players that would be first team all-Southern Conference.

6:58 – Sorry for the delay (eating). TD pass #3, and the offense is now performing as expected. We just can’t run or stop the run. Like, at all.

7:00 – tvp brings up a good (and very accurate) point. Our OL is pass blocking really well, but the run blocking still sucks. Here’s hoping that when the level of competition increases, we continue to play to our strengths and pass a whole hell of a lot.

7:08 – Warrick Dunn is not good in the broadcast booth. Better than Doc Walker? Sure. But not good. Pack finally gets a good running play.

7:10 – Not sure Wilson’s been touched yet. His uniform sure isn’t dirty.

7:12 – The biggest positive so far has to be TJ Graham. He’s really playing well. First down from the 11.

7:14 – Midnight toker George Bryan gets into the scorebook. 28-7 now.

7:15 – Jacksonville State converts the 2-pointer and stuns Ole Miss in double OT. Not a good day to be Houston Nutt.

7:21 – In case you had forgotten – Russell Wilson is really good. A magician in the two minute drill, and in turning a negative play into something positive.

7:24 – Now is the time on Shprockets when we practice kicking FGs from the hash.

7:26 – Not exactly a thing of beauty, but it stayed inside the left upright. It will be 31-7 at halftime. We will see what the backup offense can do in the second half, I’m sure.

So, did Cupcake pay his own way, or did he commit ANOTHER violation…

In other news, how did Daniel Imhoff perform?

Just got in from the game. I was in a foul mood for most of the 1st quarter. My wife of all people set me straight. She looked up from playing Tetrus on her PDA and said that first WC drive was a good thing. I looked at her but thank God I didn’t say anything except “How’s that” while I thought “what’s she been smoking?”

She very patiently pointed out how the coaches will use that to get their attention. “Same goes for the running game,” she added.

Do you think they will be trying to find a running back?

“No, I think the O-line will have some serious work. You don’t think those runs for little gain were Haynes and Greene’s fault do you?”

I changed the subject and asked her did she have any “honey do’s” for me tomorrow. Better than show my ignorance about football.

Are you trying to say you got schooled on football by your wife while she was playing Tetris?

    Damn.

    hoop,
Cut me some slack, OK? It was in the fourth quarter and tetrus was more interesting than Imholf and Underwood.

I was creating context for the first WC drive and the low run production early on. As soon as the D sorted out the traps and misdirection plays, they began to shut WC down. It was easy to see why Haynes and Greene have moved ahead of Underwood and Washington too I suppose. Greene appears to be a little better runner but I take the coaches word for it that Haynes is a better pass blocker.

Without film I couldn’t tell what was up with the O-line. Maybe tjf saw something.

What a great moral victory for the Holes against a bad LSU team!

Vermiglio, Sweezy, and Kuhn did not play.

OK, fair enough. I’ll cut you some slack. 🙂

If Imhoff doesn’t shape up in a couple years at least we have that hot new quarterback, Brian Taylor. We’ll see how it goes.

I liked how we looked overall. We have some things to work on, but I think we can go down to Orlando and get a W if we don’t turn the ball over. Wilson is the best QB in the league. He can carry us in a game like next week.

if western carolina…WESTERN F!@#ING CAROLINA scores again this game, we are going to suck ass ALL YEAR. UN-fing believable!!!!!!!!

    Well, it’s a good thing they didn’t then! 😉

Any thoughts on why George Bryan played, I mean, if TOB was punishing the tokers?

    Any word on Glennon’s knee?

Imhoff? Imhoff is a walk=on third string SR QB. Why are we worried about him “shaping up”? Tyler Brosius is our freshman recruit who will hopefully red shirt this year.

bradleyb123: My understanding of the Vermiglio, Kuhn, Sweezy and Bryan “incident” is that the 3 guys suspended were all charged with possession. Bryan was only charged with “maintaining a residence for the use of illegal drugs”. In essence, when the cops came in, Vermiglio, Kuhn and Sweezy were all in the room with the drugs. Bryan was in an adjacent room (I’ve heard his bedroom and he was asleep) but not in possession. Thus, the lesser charge. Ultimately, all the charges against all the players were dropped, since the cops made an illegal search of the apartment, and the “evidence” was suppressed. Without the drugs, it’s really hard to prove possession. And Bryan’s charge was pretty bogus in the first place.

So I guess that the reason Bryan wasn’t suspended is that he actually wasn’t “toking” with the other 3, and was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Nice to see TOB suspend the 3 who were charged for an entire game, even though their charges were dropped. Compare to CMFBD, who didn’t do anything to Sturdivant after his run-in for the exact same criminal activity.

Makes sense. Basically, this happened in the place where Bryan happens to live. It doesn’t mean he had anything to do with what his roommates and friends were doing.
