The UNC Football Bus

We have to give credit to a poster on Pack Pride for this particular image. It should be a wild morning.

Listen to Taylor Zarzour interviewing IC’s Greg Barnes who is live in Chapel Hill.

Mark Armstrong just tweeted:

Press release from UNC:

Chapel Hill – The University of North Carolina has declared six student-athletes on the football team ineligible for Saturday’s season-opening game for violating school and/or NCAA rules. The University is also withholding at least six other student-athletes from Saturday’s game while the investigation continues.

The six ineligible student-athletes include: defensive tackle Marvin Austin, cornerback Charles Brown, cornerback Kendric Burney, wide receiver Greg Little, defensive end Michael McAdoo and defensive end Robert Quinn.

Six other student-athletes who will be withheld from Saturday’s game include: tailback Shaun Draughn, defensive end Linwan Euwell, safety Brian Gupton, tailback Ryan Houston, safety Da’Norris Searcy and safety Jonathan Smith.

The number of games that those 12 student-athletes may miss has not been determined at this time. The investigation continues to include both agent-related and academic issues.

The University also continues to work today with the NCAA to determine the eligibility status of three other student-athletes. Those three will not accompany the team to Atlanta on Friday morning. Further information will be announced when a decision on their status for the game is reached.

“We’re obviously very disappointed to learn that the actions of a number of our student-athletes have resulted in their being unable to compete in Saturday’s game,” says Director of Athletics Dick Baddour. “It is important to note again that people should not make assumptions as to the nature of each student-athlete’s involvement with these issues.

“We are still working with the NCAA staff to resolve these eligibility issues. The NCAA is focusing on each of their situations on a case-by-case basis. Together we are working to determine their status in as thorough and fair a process as is possible.

“I know our fans share my disappointment, but I hope they will show their strong support for the student-athletes on the football team who will represent our University on Saturday. I am proud of the way they have worked so hard to prepare for this season despite numerous distractions. They have my full support.”

“Moving forward, Dick Baddour, Butch Davis and I are determined to use this as an opportunity to look hard at our programs, resources and people to ensure that everyone associated with the football program upholds the values that are central to Carolina’s culture, most especially our academic values,” says Chancellor Holden Thorp.

“As I’ve have said, there is no single game more important than the character and integrity of this University,” says head football coach Butch Davis. “We are disappointed the players’ choices have denied them the opportunity to compete alongside their teammates and represent the University of North Carolina. Our coaches and players have a tremendous challenge this weekend, and despite these circumstances, our team will be excited to face LSU.”

According to IC’s Greg Barnes, Bruce Carter, Quan Sturdivant and Deunta Williams did not board the bus. Barnes and Zarzour is also speculating that Johnny White did not board the bus either which would mean UNC’s top 3 running backs are not on the way to Atlanta.

Would it not be awesome to have a picture of all 30 players getting on the bus? It would look sort of like the number of fans who showed up “meet the holes” day.

  2. TAEdisonHokie 09/03/2010 at 9:00 AM #

Four buses lined up in front of the Kenan Complex…nobody boarding yet.

Given the academic climate at UNC, maybe they should have opted for short buses.

look we need to come up with a good name for this debacle

    cheat-a-gate
    agent-gate

    twitter-gate

NCAA: “did you receive money from an agent and have someone write your papers for you?”

Marvin: “it depends on what the definition of “is” is”

“I did NOT have tutor with that woman!”

9:30 am – Strength and Conditioning coach is the only coach or player that has boarded thus far.

Bus No. 1 is designated for offense, bus No. 2 for defense and bus No. 3 is for others and bus No. 4 is for support staff.

  7. IamGumbyDammit 09/03/2010 at 9:20 AM #

Ok so let’s see if I got this straight – bus one is for the offenders, bus 2 is for their defense lawyers, bus 3 for the others…

  9. Daily Update 09/03/2010 at 9:30 AM #

If I had to guess, then UNC will let about everyone travel. Why create a stir by leaving kids at home(assuming allowing them travel doesn’t violate any type of rule)?

  10. Bowlpack 09/03/2010 at 9:32 AM #

I think it is considered a violation if ineligible players travel with the team. Does anyone have a working knowledge of the bylaws?

  11. TAEdisonHokie 09/03/2010 at 9:33 AM #

If you’re ineligible or ruled to be ineligible later, traveling with the team does violate NCAA rules.

  12. TOBtime 09/03/2010 at 9:34 AM #

^Daily, you don’t think there has already been a stir created? If I were butch I wouldn’t want the headache of having to watch the guys who could not go the game if they traveled. Poor butchie, so many things to think about!

#BreakingNews- total of 12 #UNC players will not play vs #LSU..

    is this true?

    EDIT – per WRAL:
A dozen players from the University of North Carolina football team did not board the bus Friday morning, left behind as their teammates head to Atlanta for the first game of the season

    Edison beat me to it.

  16. PackMan2012 09/03/2010 at 9:43 AM #

So both running backs out? Man TJ Yates can’t ever catch a break… poor guy probably wishes he was ineligible too.

  17. IamGumbyDammit 09/03/2010 at 9:44 AM #

A total of 15 may be out – 6 ineligible, 6 more being held out while under investigation, and 3 more being held out for now until a determination is made. If this had happened at NC State, they’d padlock the doors and close down the university.

  18. Scooter 09/03/2010 at 9:45 AM #

Do any of our insiders out there have any information on the review of John Blake?

Ideal punishment for UNC would be that Marvin Austin must go on a vegan diet and a mandatory four more years of eligibility for TJ Yates. All would be forgiven/forgotten in a month.

What an idiot on the radio right now…

  20. TOBtime 09/03/2010 at 9:50 AM #

This is just too awesome. The look on the little girls face above is perfect!

  21. Sam92 09/03/2010 at 9:54 AM #

how many of the ineligible players are (were) starters?

  22. Scooter 09/03/2010 at 9:54 AM #

@Daily — agreed. I wonder what his opinion of the USC investigation was or his opinion of the NCSU investigation in the early 90’s. Ridiculous.

His only good point was the disappointment on the part of the fans — all of the buildup of UNC over the last three years and now it’s all (potentially) been shattered.

this great old beach music song just keeps running through my mind each day a new report comes out!
someone with more talent than me should put it together with a picture montage of all involved.

  24. IamGumbyDammit 09/03/2010 at 9:54 AM #

Quan Sturdivant, Duenta Williams and Bruce Carter didn’t make the bus either so those are likely the three that are in question. It was hilarious listening to the UNX fan “Tim” crying on the radio about how unfair the NCAA rules are and how unfair it will be that UNX will fall from the rankings when they lose. And some people wonder why UNX is hated by so many.

Now Zarzour and his buddy are speculating about the Brandon Willis transfer saying they needed him badly now. Well…why do you think Willis transfered suddenly right before this story broke?
