The Endgame Draws Near For Butch Davis

Butch Davis’s days as UNC football head coach are numbered.  Mark it down, it is only a matter of time now before he resigns, or failing that, is dismissed for-cause.

Not that it takes an NC State education or a job at NASA to figure that out.  Most of us figure out that 2+2=4 when we learn how to count on our fingers, and Davis’s eventual departure is that straightforward.

Bet on the former scenario – that Davis leaves “of his own accord” ostensibly so he “won’t bring any more negative attention to the great University of North Carolina” or something very similar.  Be clear about it, he doesn’t want to leave, he had it made at UNC.  He will leave because he will be forced out, and he will do so while he can still extract some severance money from the (ironically named) UNC Educational Foundation — aka “The Rams Club.”  If he is fired for-cause, he’ll leave with nothing.  Davis, being the for-hire mercenary that he is won’t do that.

Why will he be fired, even in the wake of the latest revelations — after a strong vote of support from his AD, from his Chancellor and truly, from the UNC Board of Governor’s and Erskine Bowles?

Because they aren’t going to go down with him. The news that his friend of 30 years, John Blake, was in the employ of agents while he was the Assistant Head Coach of the UNC football program has turned Davis into political kryptonite, and these professional pols and bureaucrats are going to do what’s right.

For themselves, of course.

That’s all they have ever done, and that’s all they will ever do. And if that means selling Butch Davis down the river, so be it. Even if he has naked pictures of them all, they are going to flee like roaches in the light.  It won’t be too long before Butch Davis has so few friends in Chapel Hill that he will be lucky if his wife talks to him.

That’s what politicians and bureaucrats do, stick their fingers in the air and determine what’s best for them, and it’s become clear that the tide of opinion has turned against Butch Davis.

The local press, long known for being the Pravda of UNC Athletics has turned on him.

That’s the last sign of his apocalypse.

Tide and time will wash him out of Kenan Stadium likely sooner rather than later.

The program itself has become a laughing-stock and a symbol of corruption, greed and operating far outside the lines.

Carolina may want to be a player in the annual BCS Title sweepstakes, but it hired the wrong man, a man who brought other men long known for cheating with him.  Their ambition made them blind to this reality, and it made them stone-deaf to warnings from others of what they were doing to themselves.  Instead, they stubbornly believed that their now known to be mythical “Carolina Way” of doing things “right” while flaunting an arrogant self-love not seen since Narcissus stared into a puddle would allow them to lie with the dogs and not get fleas.

It didn’t.  But that never stopped them from bush-league attempts to spin the facts that showed wrong-doing.

Consider: from the outset, UNC denied any wrongdoing, and even that the NCAA was investigating their football operation.  They called it an “inquiry” as if the NCAA was taking a poll and was curious about whether UNC football home jerseys were powder blue or navy blue.

Then they claimed that all would be resolved very quickly, that a misunderstanding had occurred, and of course, they would immediately set things right.

Even after they were forced — and they were forced — to suspend 12 players for the most important football game they’ve played in two decades, they continued to claim that the inquiry over the misunderstanding was nearly over.

Davis, for his part, has steadfastly maintained that he had no knowledge several of his NFL-bound players were knee-deep with shadowy runners and NFL agents, that he had no idea whatsoever that the very tutor he hired to school his own son in his own home had done his players homework, and that his friend and fellow football coach of three decades — who once worked for agents himself — was apparently funneling his star players towards his old employer illegally.

Right. Sure.  The only reasonable conclusion one can draw from this is that either Butch Davis is a pathological liar or a blithering idiot with next to zero control over his players and employees.  Take your pick.  It has to be one or the other.

Note to Coach Davis: try this link to search John Blake’s background.

Even when it was clear that the chips are down, UNC’s “brain trust” clung to the company line. Just yesterday – seven weeks into the investigation – UNC Athletic Director Dick Baddour told the press and fans in attendance that the end of their troubles was nigh, that the “crisis is nearly past” and that “Coach Davis has got my full support. There’s no reason to wait [until the end of the year to consider his return.] I am where I’ve been.”

Little did Baddour know that Yahoo.com had connected the financial dots from NFL agents to his Associate Head Football Coach and was about to publish that information.

In other words, the other shoe fell, the bomb dropped and it became very clear that Butch Davis’s continued presence in Chapel Hill had suddenly become a radioactive toxin that will not decay into safety anytime soon.

The verdict is in from the press, locally, regionally and nationally: Butch Davis should go.

The press is right.  He should go.  Carolina is going to pull hard probation for two Tire Bowl losses and three resounding defeats to NC State.  That’s pretty bad, considering the Tire Bowl is an afterthought of a post-season contest and that NC State has not turned in a winning record during that time.

That makes Butch Davis a loser on the field, AND a cheating pathological liar or a blithering idiot with zero control over his own players. Just the man you want to head up one of your two flagship athletic programs.

That’s “The Carolina Way?”

UNC learned on Aug. 31 about Blake-Wichard finances

    http://blogs.newsobserver.com/accnow/unc-learned-on-aug-31-about-blake-wichard-finance

So they’ve know about this report for a MONTH, and still have the audacity to talk about *integrity*.

also “Baddour said that at that time the school didn’t have enough information to dismiss Blake with cause and avoid paying Blake the remainder of the salary he was due on his $240,000-a-year contract.”

The implication here is that if he didn’t offer to resign, they were not going to fire him, but there is a lot of double talk there. We (UNC) decided that he wasn’t a ‘good fit’ (snicker) anymore, so he (Blake) offered to resign? Huh?

the tagline “its just a witch hunt by disgruntled Wolfpack fans…” has echoed into the night now that UNC-loving N&O has been FORCED to acknowledge Rivals.Yahoo thorough investigation. The cover-up is always worse than the crime and the paper trail is not a figment of imagination.

Is it just me, or is anybody else getting a kick out of these Nationwide Insurance ads on the web touting support of Tarmageddon ?

And you’re right, Alpha – That Butch escapes this fiasco is absolutely unthinkable.

Work had me away from the computer late last night and this morning. However, I noticed that the sun seemed to be a little brighter in Tampa today, so I checked into SFN just now, and BOOM. Checkmate Butch. Enjoy your 0 and whatever record at UNCheat, and never beating your in state rivals on the field. Good luck at your next NFL assistant job. Can’t wait to see the forthcoming NCAA smackdown on the Holes.

“Hannah Gage, the chairwoman of the UNC System Board of Governors, says the board is prepared to step in if UNC-Chapel Hill administrators are unable to handle the ongoing investigations into the Tar Heel football program.

In a letter to the board, UNC-system President Erskine Bowles said Thorp, Baddour, UNC-CH football coach Butch Davis and an investigative team were working together to get all of the facts.

“The University, under the leadership of our chancellor, will continue to investigate this matter and to take appropriate action until we are sure we have gotten to the bottom of this and done everything possible to make sure it never happens again,” Bowles said in the letter.”

Did anyone catch Butch Davis’s appearance on the David Glenn show this morning. In referring to the atomic bomb that hit overnight he referred to the situation as “the ncaa review”. I howled with laughter.

Everybody should call Adam and Joe today and agree with them that Butch should NOT be fired.

They obviously are taking that stance to generate discussion, because it’s the opposite of what most of their listeners would believe; however State fans really do not want Butch gone. Their image is crap and we beat their ass annualy; why would we want him gone?

  8. MrPlywood 09/30/2010 at 3:51 PM #

This all makes for great lunchtime (West coast) reading. I also visit the ESPN boards to watch the last remaining UNC deniers in full damage control mode. It’s funny. I love when they complain that State fans are commenting…

If NCAA rules state that no player can be deemed eligible, who receives training, benefits, etc., from an agent. Too, any player that is not a graduated Junior, may not have any contact with any agent, or they will so be deemed ineligible.

So, with that thought, what happens when they deem John Blake an Agent under the president set by the Chris Hawkins guidelines. This would mean that EVERY player that John Blake has coached, for the past three years, was ineligible. Gnaw on that…

I am only here to help, folks.

I also think that we’re going to see vacated wins for several seasons if Starvin Marvin was in cahoots with agents after his sophomore year.

  11. primacyone 09/30/2010 at 4:09 PM #

I think Starvin Marvin was paid to come to UNC. I can’t prove that, but I’ve thought that ever since he made his comittment. Now knowing one of his high school coaches is precieved to be involved in moving the money, the possbility that Marvin was paid to come to UNC is harder to discount.

  12. Ismael 09/30/2010 at 4:25 PM #

primacy, not paid but “paid”, knoimean? I think this goes on alot, these guys funnel money to the coaches and asst coaches of can’t miss 5* guys and get them to steer students. once these kids get to campus they’re parents and former coaches are suddenly able to give them walking-around money, etc. hard to trace unless u can get records.

  13. elvislives 09/30/2010 at 4:30 PM #

Does anyone know if the player that transfered from UNC to Tennesee has been spoken to? He’s the one that claimed (in January 2010) that Blake offered to pay him to stay? (feel free to edit to add the player’s name and the SFN link from the archives when it was talked about in the past)

  14. LRM 09/30/2010 at 4:49 PM #

    Alpha, awesome man.

  15. newt 09/30/2010 at 4:54 PM #

At this point, the amount of punishment the NCAA lays on UNC is highly irrelevant. Here’s why…

No amount of punishment fixes the program, because it doesn’t repair UNC’s image. The thing that will bring the bulk of the suffering to UNC, and conversely glee to us, is the process they are going to have to go through to fix their image.

UNC is going to have to raise the blinds and open the door on their athletics programs, something they clearly hate to do. They will need to acknowledge their problems openly and in detail, and state plainly what they are doing to fix those problems. The actions they take will need to be drastic to convince folks they are really cleaning it up. That means heads will roll, and they will probably need to REALLY adopt standards that are just a little bit higher than everyone else’s. Even then, their integrity will be questioned for years to come.

That process will be both humiliating and likely damaging to UNC’s competitiveness as a program as well, and the so-called ABCers will enjoy those things more than any punishment the NCAA can leverage upon them, until they just get bored and quit caring, which will be even worse for UNC.

There is not other way for Carolina to start to bring it’s image back, and the longer they put it off, the tougher it’s going to be for them to recover. As a certified ABCer, I’m actually enjoying watching them prolong their own agony by not facing up to the reality of their situation. They could get back on track or better much more quickly right now by cleaning house and making a play for someone like Mark Richt. God I hope they don’t do that.

  16. baxter 09/30/2010 at 5:57 PM #

^Mark Richt can’t even control his own program, and is known to be a douche to his staff, so by all means, bring on Richt!

  17. highstick 09/30/2010 at 6:16 PM #

Carolina will deny, deny, deny, until hell freezes over! There is no way that they will do anything other than give you that freakin’ pious “who me” look, give a little passive aggressive comment, and continue to deny…

If the NCAA isn’t in their basketball program after all of this dirt has been turned over in the football program, Noah can come back because I might deny the evidence of a God also!!

    I love you, man!

I’ll be gnawing on that tidbit of information for a while! heh heh!

I love how `The Carolina Way’ has literally become a punchline.

  20. tjfoose1 09/30/2010 at 6:53 PM #

Has Carolina become the Pete Rose of college athletics? I kept getting visions of Pete, denying for years that he ever bet on baseball.

  21. BJD95 09/30/2010 at 7:05 PM #

Calling a bunch of arrogrant, lying, cheating assholes “arrogant, lying, cheating assholes” doesn’t make one disgruntled – just observant.

Couldn’t happen to a nicer crowd. Baddour and Butch keep voicing their wild, implausible denials because there’s no real alternative for them. They have no chance to survive this whirlwind. None.

  22. Lunatic Fringe 09/30/2010 at 7:10 PM #

Honestly, this blog told them weeks ago that they had to fire Davis, but I am glad they did not listen. The longer they keep the “lame duck” coach employed the better for everyone except UNC.

They keep a coach on that now has 0 chance of ever being successful at the school and make themselves look foolish in the process. Win-Win!

For once I agree with Baddour, I completely support Butch Davis as HC at UNC.

  23. OldWuf 09/30/2010 at 8:48 PM #

Keep The Chief! I agree, “The Image Thing” repair is going to be the most enjoyable part of this whole experience. I do agree that Davis is good as gone. I told people several weeks ago that there is no way that UNX would stand for having their “squeaky clean” dragged through the slop and Butch would pay, whether he knew or not. What I did not think about was that Butch IS a mercenary and his devotion to UNX is a farce. He cares not how much damage he does and holds the skeletons in the closet over Baddour’s, Thorpe’s and BOT’s heads. Now the jig is up, the news is out, it looks bad and Butch has little leverage. He is history, be it now or after the season. But it would be better for the rest of us if he stayed.

  24. NCSU84 09/30/2010 at 10:37 PM #

In a way, I would hate to see Butchie leave. I really enjoy beating up on his teams every year. From the outset I questioned his coaching abilities and he did not let me down. He continues to make poor decisions both on and off the field – just the kind of coach I want at Tarhole U.

  25. MP 10/01/2010 at 12:26 PM #

I’m not familiar with the circumstances that led to the SMU death penalty or any other high-profile football scandals. Does anyone here know or have an opinion if this thing could go down as the most complete implosion of a football program in history?
