Sagarin Picks the Pack to Finish 9-3

Jeff Sagarin has predicted NC State to finish 9-3 in the regular season and to come in second place in the ACC’s Atlantic Division in his weekly college football rankings. Sagarin has the Wolfpack ranked #36 in his listings, which is about the same place that State sits in other polls.  Calculating out his predictors and other statistical indicators, currently the ACC is slate should end as:

I am not sure how much to make of this ranking, however, because when I see Clemson coming in at 3-9 overall, I am deeply suspicious.  The Tigers played very well at Auburn, and could have as easily won that game as lost it.  To me, that’s not the hallmark of a team that’s going to go 3-9.  While the Tigers may not win the ACC or go to a BCS bowl, I am convinced they are better than Sagarin’s predictions.

Interestingly, Sagarin also seems to think that State will lose one out of conference game – if they are going to finish 6-2 in conference play as he predicts, and if he is saying that the Pack is going to finish 9-3, that means that State will lose on the road to ECU next month, its only remaining OOC game for the regular season.  Having seen a Tulsa team nearly beat them and after collapsing in the second half against a mediocre Virginia Tech offense, I am having problems believing that the Pirates can stop NC State’s offense. That in mind,  I believe State will have the upper hand in the upcoming in-state rivalry game.  State’s defense has improved, so has its offense and I simply don’t believe that even with the home field advantage that ECU can keep up with the Pack’s potent offensive attack.

At the same time I hope Sagarin has hit the mark with the Wolfpack – a 9-3 regular season may well slot NC State to return to the Peach Chick-Fil-A Bowl in Atlanta, which is a very welcome and well-regarded destination destination for Pack fans.

Additionally this week’s opponent — Georgia Tech (2-1) comes in at #34 — making Saturday’s contest (12pm ESPN) a pick ’em for all intents and purposes.  After all, it would be hard to find a plug nickel’s difference between the #34 and the #36 team in college football.  While the Jackets will be homestanding, it’s hard to believe that Bobby Dodd Stadium will be imposing enough to give Tech a nine point advantage – which is the current Vegas line for the game.

As it is often said, however, games are played on gridirons, not Excel spreadsheets, so take this for what its worth.  If NC State can contain the Georgia Tech offense and maintain the pace it has thus far in the season when it has the ball, chances are very good that the Pack can return home from Atlanta 4-0.  If the resurgent Wolfpack stopping unit fails to keep the Yellow Jacket triple-option attack under its paw, then it will be a very long day for the team.

Meanwhile, ESPN’s Pat Forde is still doubting the Pack:

ESPN Faux 3-0 Teams

NC State (25). What’s to like: After throwing 11 interceptions last year, quarterback Russell Wilson is pick-free so far in 2010. The opportunistic Wolfpack (one word) has outscored opponents 72-21 in the first half.

What’s to doubt: NC State hasn’t run the ball with consistency. And there are plenty of challenging games to come.

Reality check: At Georgia Tech on Saturday (ESPN, noon ET). Wolfpack are 1-11 in their past 12 ACC road games outside the state of North Carolina.

Verdict: NC State will finish with its first winning record since 2005.

I am not convinced that Forde has been watching NC State closely, as I came away convinced that not only did NC State have a great game running the ball against Cincinnati, I also thought they have found a potential star back in Mustafa Greene.  After watching the replay of the game on the DVR, that thought was only reinforced — the offensive line has improved and Greene is a player who can do a LOT of damage if he breaks into the second level.  Maybe it is my red-tinted glasses, but I did hear some praise for Greene from the ostensibly neutral ESPN game announcers too, so maybe not.

At this point I think Clemson and FSU compete for the Atlantic with us having a slight chance to get in on that.

I don’t like anyone in the coastal.

Keep the optimism up guys and gals … keep it up!

This could be a special year (in more ways than one) – h*ll, it already has been with the stuff going on at the Hole.

This Saturday will tell us a lot. GaWolf brought up litmus test – my thoughts exactly.

A new feeling creeping over Wolfpack nation? Dare I say optimism?

“… And sometimes, change is good.”

5-3 or 4-4 in conference is my gut feel. If we were to somehow go 6-2 I would be shocked.

Cincinnati may not be very good, but they’re as good as any team in the crappy ACC. S

how we do at GT, even if we lose, will clear things up for me. Here are the following possible outcomes:

we lose 38-7 (not good 4-4 in ACC or worse) they dominate

we lose 21-17 (I think 5-3 in ACC) we play respectably

we win 21-17 (I think 5-3 in ACC) we play respectably

we win 28-7 (Its gonna be a great year 6-2) still Clemson wins the division)

GT will score more than 7 pts. Bank on it. If the score for both teams isn’t in the 20’s, I’ll be shocked. 30’s wouldn’t surprise me.

I want to see the Pack play 4 quarters of in-your-face, aggressive defense before I’ll join the 9-3 Club. The 4th quarter collapses the last two games (against barely mediocre teams) concern me.

We’re not good enough (yet) to let off the gas against anybody…

it’s nice to get what amounts to some good press from sagarin, but i have to see us beat a good team before i start thinking about 9 wins

this saturday will speak volumes about our team – GT is certainly one of the best teams in the ACC; if we can beat them yes i’ll jump on the 9 win bandwagon too. if not, we’re probabaly looking at 7 wins and a bowl game, which is at least an improvement over last season’s debacle

GT has scored 41, 25 and 30 points against some good defenses. Our offense will need to score 35-40 to beat them and with their triple option offense (that will cause us fits) and our weak secondary they will keep our offense off the field too long for us to to that. I think they win this one….but we shall see.

You can’t take Sagarin too seriously this early in the season.

I honestly don’t know the specifics of how these particular predictions were reached (and I’m frankly too lazy to go look) but I do know Sagarin’s ratings are big on looking at what teams have actually done (and their opponents and their opponents’ opponents, etc.).

It’s too early in the season for something like that to be very accurate. The sample size just isn’t large enough. Essentially the same reason they wait to release the first BCS rankings until mid-October.

I think it’s a safe bet that Clemson will NOT go 3-9 (1-7). FSU, however, might have a shot at 10-2 (8-0). Look at their schedule…it’s very favorable for them….

Home: Wake, BC, UNC, Clemson, Florida
    Road: UVa, Miami, NCSU, UMd

Their toughest road games are Miami and us (and maybe Maryland…not sure about them yet), but all three are winnable. UNC and Clemson are the tough outs at home, but again they’re winnable.

Not sure what to expect from FSU yet to be honest. I didn’t think they’d win but I certainly didn’t think they’d get waxed like they did against the Sooners, even taking into consideration that the game was in Norman. But I don’t think we can discount them just yet, either.

If they do get to the Florida game with one loss (8-0 in conference) and that loss being AT Oklahoma…depending on what others do between now and then FSU could be playing for a shot at the BCS Championship game I think.

Dear Mr. Johnson and Mr. Nesbitt

Down the middle of the field is wide open. Please watch our last three games.

GT needs to run only one play over and over again

1st down Nesbitt chased out of pocket runs around then passes down the middle of the field for completed pass
2nd down Nesbitt chased out of pocket runs around then passes down the middle of the field for completed pass
3rd down Nesbitt chased out of pocket runs around then passes down the middle of the field for completed pass

Positive press is always a good thing. We can play with any team on the schedule, and we have also shown historically we can lay an egg with any team on the schedule.

FSU is really struggling right now, especially after the loss to OU. Thought OU was really good but they laid an egg this week and almost lost. Playing comparison games is always dangerous but it does not bode well for FSU. On top of that, Ponder is struggling with a sore arm, and when your QB is not able to throw it like he wants……..

We have shown the tendency to give up the big pass play, and GT cannot throw, but Nesbitt will occasionally complete the long pass. Hopefully the coaches this week shut down the middle of the field on the pass and I think we have the athletes on D to contain Nesbitt. They dont have the big bruising back that GT is famous for, so we should be OK if we can stop the pass. Here’s positive hopes for 4-0 and while I never want to lose a game, I would be happy with 9-3.

^^ Yep, this is also my own fear. I sincerely hope the the defensive coaches (and by defensive coaches I mean Tenuta) are aware enough of this weakness that adjustments are being made as we speak.

If not, then I doubt GT will need 2nd down, and they damn sure won’t need 3rd.

Let me clarify when I say happy with 9-3. I am happy with 9-3 as long as 2 of the 9 or UNCHeaters and EZU.
