N&O discloses name of tutor involved in UNC scandal

UNC’s media blitz yesterday makes a lot more sense in light of this morning’s story from the N&O divulging the name of the tutor involved in UNC cheating scandal.

This update last night from Old Macdonald is required reading. Please make sure you get up to speed on yesterday’s events.

Wiley, 22, graduated from UNC in 2009.

She was working as a mentor/tutor in UNC’s academic support program in 2006 when Butch Davis, then the newly hired head football coach, asked for recommendations for a tutor for his son, Drew, now 17. Davis said during an interview Thursday that he was given a list of four or five people who worked in the academic support program. His family used several of the tutors, and the woman in question worked for him from December 2008 to May 2010.

“She was kind of like an academic coach,” said Davis, who declined to name the tutor. “She tried to teach him how to organize his notebooks, how to separate one subject from the other, how to do research, how to do papers, she just helped him in a variety of different [ways]. She was one of a couple of tutors. She worked with specific subjects.

“… She did a good job for our family.”

Meanwhile, she also worked as a tutor/mentor for the school until July 2009 – after she had graduated from UNC with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and just before she started her job teaching fifth grade at a Durham elementary school in August 2009, according to university alumni association records and her teaching contract.

“Unless she comes out and says it, I don’t know if there is any way to prove that it was being done with any coaches’ ”

as i said, as long as Butch keeps up the 10,000 a month payment, she wont say a word.

Obviously, Thorpe and Crew are trying to put pressure on this girl to come out and talk so that she will stop holding up the process. Another genius move! That’s sarcasm, BTW! They have probably ruined her ability to work in Chapel Hill, and possibly anywhere in the area because they felt the need to out her in public. So, now, I’m sure she won’t blow the proverbial whistle on the program, right? You just pissed her off.

Perfect. Wiley graduated, got a job, and continued to ‘work’ for Butch? If she still ‘worked’ for the football team last school year, then she wasn’t employed at the school at the time she wrote the papers for the players. At least, not last year. I would have to wonder how far back her ‘help to the team’ went. 2008? 2007? Notably, Butch’s son was 13 at the time she first ‘tutored’ Butch Jr. She was recommended by the school, basically, at the time of Butch’s hiring. Did Butch bring her into the Athletic fold?

I also find it EXTREMELY pointed that NONE of these issues pre-date Butch’s hire! Not one issue. How can Baddour and Thorpe convince everyone that Butch is going to clean the place up when he caused the mess to start with!?

Sure, some of Bunting’s ex-players are involved, but they were either kicked off of the team by Bunting or didn’t acknowledge that they even went to school at UNC when they left. They just happened to come back when the proverbial coast was clear for them to bait players for their agents.

I honestly believe that Baddour and Thorpe had no clue, when they hired Butch, what they were getting into bed with. They had to have known a bit about Butch, and possibly Blake. But I’m sure the interview process was full of excitement. Butch certainly sweet talked them about cleaning up the program at ‘The U,’ thus getting everyone pumped about his ability to win at UNC while running a clean program. They were on their way to being ‘The Ewe!’ Davis probably lauded Blake as one of the best recruiters in the country, while leaving out the salty reputation part. Baddour, and Butch are both either guilty of being complicit, or of being negligent. I don’t know how you can see it any other way.

By the way all of this was handled, it really looks like Baddour thought that he could sweep all of this under the rug, because he didn’t know how big the problems were. But, they are now caught in their web of unabashed support for each other. It’s sink or swim time, fellas.

The fact that they are still trying to cover up despite how ugly this has gotten is a hint that the truth is so much worse!

So Austin is bad, Blake is bad, and the tutor is bad, and UNC is pristine in it’s shimmering light blue and carolina wayness. Thanks for the news N&O, did you see where my turnip truck went?

hey have probably ruined her ability to work in Chapel Hill, and possibly anywhere in the area because they felt the need to out her in public.

FWIW she is a teacher in Durham now.

Again, I don’t think she is a bad person. I just think she was starry-eyed and she crossed a line because she was asked to by the players or even perhaps someone on the coaching staff like Blake.

You can only imagine the sort of pressure that would be on a 22 year old young person.

  5. ppack3 09/24/2010 at 4:17 PM #

^agreed. I never said that she was a bad person. In fact, I could def see where someone could get wrapped up in a terrible situation like writing papers for players. Then again, it COULD be more sinister, we don’t know. We don’t even know if she was the only tutor helping the players. We don’t know if she did this on her own, or under direction. Basically, we know she was involved and that her name is out there.

My point is that she HAS to get hounded about this by her students (5th grade is the new 9th grade, BTW), her student’s parents and faculty. In other words, her 15 minutes of fame starts now. And, when this kind of spotlight is pointed at average, ordinary people, strange things happen. To add, everyone seems to have a stake in what’s going on, even the vocal minority in the Duke area (Durham). So, I’m sure she won’t be able to stop deflecting questions about the scandal at this point. Her life, as she knows it, could be compromised.

I just thought that it was another dumb move for Thorpe and Baddour to give out her name, especially because she works in the immediate area. Their only motive would be to flush her out of her silence, but that is bound to have a bad recoil effect if she starts talking.

Again, Thorpe and Baddour are arrogant AND seemingly unaware of the possibility that Butch or Blake could’ve been involved. They still trust the thief, uh, I mean, the Chief.

It’s becoming clear that BMFD didn’t clean up the U, he was just better at hiding stuff.

I’d hate to be the guy driving the bus this lass is about to be thrown under.

Today’s Greensboro News & Record sports page banner was about this story, but I wasn’t able to find her name anywhere in the article.

“She was kind of like an academic coach,” said Davis, who declined to name the tutor. “She tried to teach him how to organize his notebooks, how to separate one subject from the other…”

Am I the ONLY one who finds this hilarious? He doesn’t even say she SUCCEEDED. She TRIED to teach him how to organize his notebooks and separate the subjects from one another. TRIED!!!

Wow, Drew must be fielding academic scholarship offers from ALL of the Ivy League schools. Of course he’s a “legacy” of sorts at the “Harvard of the South.” Well, until Pops gets canned at least.

This situation is getting a lot of JUSTLY deserved examination. If you read the 20 plug pages on IC and PP, you find a LOT of tidbits, mostly garbage, but tidbits. The young lady graduated from a Christian HS in Charlotte. PP has published names of parents, addresses, phone numbers, employment, etc. They have also published info on her. Her life is NOW a completely open book.

The N&O and the CO have had her name and all details for several weeks. Her first name was leaked on both boards several weeks ago.

Folks are speculating that she will sue the University, however, the info was released under the FOI act, so that is a stretch. She has an attorney….and they are NOT Talking.

She obviously earned a UNC degree and is a NC Dept of Public Instruction Licensed teacher. This may be where the wicket gets REALLY Sticky. I am NOT an attorney, but sometimes the NC General Statutes are pretty straightforward. Here is a link to NCGS 14-118.2 This GS is also published on both the NCSU and UNC Academic Info web pages.

    http://law.justia.com/northcarolina/codes/2005/chapter_14/gs_14-118.2.html

Prior to her graduation in May 2009, she was exempt from a Class 2 Misdemeanor Charge. Any “academic fraud” assistance that occurred then would be handled by the UNC Honor Code board. There is speculation, based on past precedence, that UNC COULD revoke or recall her Diploma. That would then decertify her teaching credentials.

Any work constituting “academic fraud” done AFTER May 2009 COULD be subject to the GS and could lead to charges. If convicted, then this could have an impact on her teaching credentials.

One has to wonder why someone with a sterling background and obviously raised in an enviroment where trust and responsibility were emphasized would knowingly violate the UNC Honor Code. If that happened, as UNC has acknowledged in their “Presser”, then there is also the issue of HOW often and HOW many were involved.

The IC board is also stating (and take this with a grain of salt) that she really WAS a NANNY, among other things, for the Coach Davis’s family. That she, based on those who know her, was a tutor/mentor (as BD described), however, she ALSO ran personal errands, dropped off his son and picked him up in one of Coach Davis’ vehicles (they listed them and also listed his family’s “Courtesy Cars”). So, she was more than just a tutor that came over to assist in notebook organization.

Whatever happens, her life is now under a microscope bigger than any telescope in the Morehead Planatarium….

As a father, I would be upset if this was my daughter….and if a modicom of the allegations are true, I would also be disappointed and also question where I and my wife failed.

The OTHER thing that is probably the MOST DAMNING, from UNC’s perspective, is that they FAILED to launch a MORE COMPLETE INTERNAL INVESTIGATION in May 2009. So, all the ballyhooing about SELF REPORTING should be prefaced with “we did not think anything was seriously wrong then….let it slide…NOW, some 15 months later, we find there are issues that may have been going on for several years…”

There is NO WAY that the NCAA will NOT be concerned about this….and their lack of due diligence LAST YEAR.

Also, and this comes from the IC BOARD, the name LITTLE keeps coming uup as to whom “outed” the tutor. If any of the stories are correct, the NCAA interviewed an athlete and he said…”Man, I thought you were going to ask me about Jennifer writing all those term papers….I don’t know nothing about all this agent mess….you gotta ask Marvin and Coach Blake….they are the ones that know about these things….”. A slightly different variation MIGHT involve a certain Mr. Willis, who perhaps has been promised academic assistance from a tutor.

Who KNOWS….but this thing is NOT going away. The NCAA will come down on UNC, but some folks here want Kenan Stadium “carpet bombed”….and some of the IC crowd feels that the faculty is also cheering for such an event and will sell tickets and have a Prius raffle. Slowly the teachings of St. Monteith are taking hold over there…

    “and they are NOT Talking.”

I wonder who they are not talking to? If she has the strong moral family background, who’s to say her dad hasn’t got her taking to the NCAA? Maybe its just UNC that they’re not talking to.

That possibility would scare the bejeezus out of DB and HT and BD and perhaps make them want to discredit her.

Does not this whole scenario remind you of something Clinton/Erskinesque? Certainly there is someone out there with a heckuva book idea when this all plays out…Maybe this is a new Dan Brown sequel?
