Butch Davis on 620 AM 11:30(live link included)

Yes, the Charles Robinson who broke the story last night.

Go here to listen live.

The general spin of UNC callers and fans on the Internet is that this is old news. Supposedly UNC and the NCAA knew about this weeks ago when Blake resigned. However, why does that matter? Does it make the accusations any less damaging that the NCAA and UNC already knew?

At least one UNC fan has a clue on this debacle. Tarheelfanblog has done a great job on this story so far:

Hey Baddour, That Light You Saw Was A Thermonuclear Detonation

In light of these revelations, which appear to be true, there is only one course UNC can set at this point. The first is Butch Davis can no longer be the head football coach. The football program, athletic department and by extension the University has been compromised in an incredible manner. While Davis may not have known what Blake was doing, he should have known given how long it went on. Hopefully Davis will do the honorable thing and step aside but if not the Chancellor Holden Thorp is left with little choice but to ask for his resignation or terminate him. Secondly, UNC needs to dismiss Marvin Austin immediately. Since Austin is not even practicing, this is not much of a leap but his role in this mess has been defined from the beginning. This is the final nail in his coffin. Third, once the Williams and Burney appeals are done, UNC needs to allow the hammer to fall where it may with the remaining players in limbo. Let the NCAA do its thing. Let the honor court do its thing. Accept those rulings and move on the best you can.

Summation of interview:

-California and Miami trips are not connected. They involve different people. MA has been talking to so many people.

-The marketing reps name in this story wasn’t known by anyone before they reported it last night.

-More is to come from Yahoo Sports. The story is so complicated that they have to chop it up and go with what they have.

-In regards to Butch Davis, a lot has been external. With Wichard, it was a Blake/Wichard relationship. Up until this point, he hasn’t seen any direct involvement with Butch Davis. However, the question of whether Butch should have known is a legitimate question?

-This story is unique. Relationships with coaches and agents have always been an issue, but it has never gotten to the point where there was specific evidence linking a coach and an agent(specifically the credit card is troubling). He can’t answer what the NCAA will do, however it is a serious problem when a coach is this tied to an agent.

So now Gary Wichard has his own “Personal Bank”? I don’t know that I’ve ever heard of someone having their own bank, let a lone, using that bank to transfer money to people doing illegal things for you. How did Wichard think that wouldn’t get traced back to him? It’s HIS bank?!

ncsunacho – good point. If the BOGs of the UNC system feel it’s necessary to investigate all member schools, then why doesn’t the ACC feel the same? Could the conference require schools to perform internal investigations where no violations have been found? To me, that seems like a cop pulling you over because he knows people have sped where you are driving, so you must be speeding if you’re driving there, right?

If UNC cheated to go 8-5 the last two years, shouldn’t the BOGs only make schools with 8-5 records and tire bowl losses investigate themselves?

  2. wolfbuff 09/30/2010 at 10:28 AM #

I have no problem with the BOG wanting internal investigations at the other schools. Last thing they want (or any of us should want) is for there to be questions about the integrity of the entire system. Look, if there is something internally going on, we should root it out. I don’t believe there is anything there, bu we should learn from what is going on over “there” and make sure our house is clean. If we have done nothing wrong, we should have nothing to hide.

I would agree to an in depth investigation of NC State athletics only if they agree to appoint an independent panel to expand the investigation into UNC basketball.

    If not, F off.

  4. ncsunacho 09/30/2010 at 10:32 AM #

    I aways forget about ECU… oops…

  5. NCStatePride 09/30/2010 at 10:34 AM #

^You’re crazy. ECU has it’s break out years, but being in what is often considered a mid-major conference, their average competition, and the overall reputation of the program is going to forever keep it in obscurity in terms of football prominance in NC. ECU’s best chance for becoming the premire football school in NC is to show it can continue to win the C-USA even without Skip and hope for a conference bid from another conference (Big East, ACC, SEC). ECU is in the wrong state for the Big East, the ACC is too snooty for ECU, and the SEC… that just isn’t happening.

This could be HUGE for NC State football.

I posted it in the forums, but I’ll say it here. The UNC School System will insist investigations of all UNC School System institutions be investigative. They will find some minor infractions at Duke, NC State, Wake, and ECU which the UNC media machine will spin into this conglomerate of corruption inside the state. They will mandate restrictions on all UNC System Institutions barring them from various athletic participations until they clean up their programs. The probationary period will be about as long as UNC is banned from bowls by the NCAA.

Finally, the UNC School System will dig up massive infractions at a mid-major school… someone “no one will miss” like UNC-G or UNC-W… that occassionally reaches headlines so they can show how hard the school system is willing to come down on someone. They’ll make an example of this poor bastard for the sake of saving-face with the rest of the nation.

    —————-

Not a pretty picture, but I’m sticking by it. This is what I am realistically thinking could happen, especially if connections with UNC’s basketball program start coming out (i.e. Greg Little). The Carolina Mafia will have no part of UNC Basketball being besmirched.

EDIT: I realize Wake and Duke are private institutions and nothing can be forced on them, but they can be “insisted” upon. This actually makes it worse for NC State because if Duke and Wake, rightfully so, roll their eyes at UNC’s influence on the School System they could decide to make that much more of an example out of NCSU.

  6. tractor57 09/30/2010 at 10:38 AM #

I sure want to see the BOG mandate ANYTHING regarding Wake or Duke – or even request an investigation.

As I said before any signs of problems at Elizabeth City State U?

We all know where this is aimed. Maybe time to reform the BOG – not so much for athletics but for total waste of taxpayers’ money.

  7. ncsunacho 09/30/2010 at 10:42 AM #

I’m pretty sure that the BoG has no control over Duke or Wake. I’m not sure if it is possible… But I wouldn’t put it past our “buddy” John Swofford to piggyback anything that the UNC BofG does…

To your point above NCStatePride… ECU is very relavant in this conversation… and I think to the landscape of football here in NC … I was just trying to make a point in my earlier comment.

Does anyone know if there is an audio file with Robinson’s interview on 620 this morning? I missed it live but wanted to catch up.

  9. YogiNC 09/30/2010 at 10:44 AM #

They can’t mandate that for Duke or Wake (not UNX system schools) and I seriously doubt any entity in the state could for that matter. Since they are private only the NCAA could do that. As for how NC State would fare under an investigation Debbie Yow just hired another compliance officer AND with everything going on over on the hill they have crossed the Ts and dotted their Is. Could they have missed something, maybe. Hopefully Chancellor Woodson would get involved and tell the BOG that unless they have some type of proof they should mind only those who have already proven they couldn’t be trusted.

    AMEN!

butch is on 620 right now talking about the article. One word, deflection.

  13. kbrown 09/30/2010 at 10:50 AM #

I fired off an email to the Board of Governors letting them know how ridiculous they are looking and making an embarrassment of the entire system by the way they are allowing this investigation to take place internally without calling for an independent investigator to perform the “review”. I’m sure I’m not the first and I will probably get the same generic email thanking me for my concern and they are doing everything they can to take care of this.

In other words “Nothing to see here, move on”

  14. NCStatePride 09/30/2010 at 10:52 AM #

^Agreed that we are better equipped to deal with this issue now than ever before. Hell, UNC picked the best possible time for NC State to come under scrutiny of the NCAA.

I changed my previous post. I realize Duke and Wake can’t be forced to do anything (so mandate was the wrong word) but it can be “impressed” upon them. Obviously they don’t have to follow suit, and I sure as Hell wouldn’t, but I think that just pokes the bear a little more and brings NC State under fire even more. Ironically, even though I dismiss ECU, it probably is the biggest program in North Carolina that is the most vulnerable since Wake and Duke are private and NC State has it’s house in order (as well as one Hell of an aggressive AD).

  15. packplantpath 09/30/2010 at 10:54 AM #

BD in the press conference keeps talking about how hard it is to make sure the kids don’t do something wrong, that you can’t watch them all the time.

He is certainly correct, but lets start with the easy stuff. Why would you hire John Blake, a man who has a major reputation of violations, to be assistant coach. Why would you let former players WHO WERE KICKED OFF THE TEAM AND ARRESTED FOR DRUGS, back on campus and in your facilities.

When you don’t catch the easy stuff, the stuff that is hard to find certainly isn’t going to be found.

  16. tractor57 09/30/2010 at 10:59 AM #

Let’s start with simple stuff –
have staff of character, recruit players of character

  17. wolfpacktexx 09/30/2010 at 11:04 AM #

Butch was on 620 this AM, Classic Butch, When asked about the John Blake hire and John Blake association (over many years) he put the blame on the UNC Human Resources and Admission group that are responsible for the investigation before such a staff hire is made. He pointed out how John got a clean bill of health during the hire. ( So this is another indictment why we should smirk at UNC’s own investigation)
Butch stated he does not know about Talyor Zarzor’s (host) credit cards so how would he know the personal life of his players. Good reach Butch… What a joke…

Hahaha, at least some of them are starting to get it.

“At least we will not have to vacate any bowl wins, right? See, a silver lining in every cloud.”

Butch and Blake have been boys since the 80’s. For Butch to say he didnt know Blake’s reputation or propensity to be involved with things not allowed by the NCAA is absurd.

I found these on the net – feel free to pass them along to any Tarholes you have been itching to serve…

    Crow and Mushroom Stew

    3 crows
    1 Tbsp lard/shortening
    1 pint stock or gravy
    2 Tbsp cream
    1/2 cup mushrooms
    salt and pepper
    cayenne pepper

Clean and cut crows into small portions and let them cook a short time in the lard/shortening in a saucepan, being careful not to brown them.
Next, add to the contents of the pan, the stock or gravy, and salt, pepper and cayenne to taste.
Simmer 1 hour, or until tender, add mushrooms, simmer 10 minutes more and then stir in cream.
Arrange the mushrooms around the crows on a hot platter.

    Potted Crow:

    6 crows
    3 bacon slices
    stuffing of your choice
    1 diced carrot
    1 diced onion
    chopped parsley
    hot water or stock
    1/4 cup shortening
    1/4 cup flour
    buttered toast

Clean and dress crows; stuff and place them upright in stew-pan on the slices of bacon. Add the carrot, onion and a little parsley, and cover with boiling water or stock.
Cover the pot and let simmer for 2-3 hours, or until tender, adding boiling water or stock when necessary.
Make a sauce of the shortening and flour and 2 cups of the stock remaining in the pan.

Serve each crow on a thin slice of moistened toast, and pour gravy over all.

    Crow Pie:

    1 crow
    stuffing of your choice
    salt and pepper
    shortening
    flour
    2 Pie crust mixes
    2-3 hard-boiled eggs

Stuff the crow. Loosen joints with a knife but do not cut through.
Simmer the crow in a stew-pan, with enough water to cover, until nearly tender, then season with salt and pepper. Remove meat from bones and set aside.
Prepare pie crusts as directed. (Do not bake)
Make a medium thick gravy with flour, shortening, and juices in which the crow has cooked and let cool.
Line a pie plate with pie crust and line with slices of hard-boiled egg. Place crow meat on top. Layer gravy over the crow. Place second pie dough crust over top.
Bake at 450 degrees for 1/2 hour.
