I think Newt is right. Somehow the ‘Holes always find a way to wiggle out of stuff.

“I’ve got a bad feeling about this.”

Whatever the reason….the Blake news has the IS board REALLY buzzing. this is the first sign that SOME of the Blue Kool Aid Addicted Wine and Cheese crowd have started to take the “12 Step Program”.

    Here is a link….

Usually they blame the evil administration and lately have been talking about how all the writers on the N&O are NCSU Grads. When did we add the Schol of Journalism? I did NOT get that email.

If this thing unfolds with only 10% of its potential fury, it WILL get ugly.

I have proposed a hotline; 1-800-N-DENIAL. I need volunteers to man the site and extra phone lines…..no contibution is too small.

I refuse to get excited or to speculate. I think that there is way too much fire and that UNC will get a major sanction.

That will NEVER defuse the UNX Crazies (and we have those in our Lobo Luniacy Ward that have similar behavioral problems…but at least we shut down the Face Tatoo Parlor…).

Some of the UNC fan base had been looking forward to the Chic-Fil-A game more than my 7 and 4 YO GK’s look forward to Christmas and Halloween. They and their buddies ordered tickets the FIRST day, even discussed WHAT fan wear attire to take and what fan attire souvenirs to purchase. The game last night WAS supposed to be a big deal.

I think the UNC team, as a whole, showed a lot of character. I believe, but have NO evidence, that Blake’s fate was cast last week, but the sheer PR impact of it would have been too devastating….

However, the ESPN lamblasting of him last night upset that course of action. I have been involved in Crisis and PR Control and you ALWAYS have alternative strategies….especially when you “lawyered up” so early.

The legal bills are mounting. BD is worried about selling his house in a down market, but his BLUE parachute will be wide and bountiful.

SO….just read, relax and let it play out.

    BACK to the RACE….

  4. 61Packer 09/05/2010 at 9:57 PM #

I doubt Butch’s parachute, if there is one, will be any more bountiful than Fouler’s.

TOLD YA!!!! HAHAHA…. HIT THE ROAD SANTA!!!!!

    Wow. This is crazy.

Friday, I was talking about the “best case scenario” for UNC being flushed down the toilent…now this.

There’s still the possibility this ain’t all no big deal – after all, the Tarheels showed great heart and talent last night in their game to LSU. But if you are a Tar Heel fan, things look bad, real bad.

  7. ADVENTUROO 09/05/2010 at 10:14 PM #

    61Packer,

POINT WELL TAKEN. However, as MUCH as I disliked FUF, he was OUR AD….be him ever so incompetent.

BD, if even there is a shred of truth in all the allegations, appears to have violated the LETTER as well as the SPIRIT of the NCAA Regulations….and YOU KNOW how upset the local media and our rival institutions get when you even THINK about violating the SPIRIT of the rules.

SO…it will be interesting to see this play out.

When you write contracts, you usually get in trouble and if the other person’s lawyer is smarter than yours, then you can interpret clauses and phrases in about any manner that suits you.

Unless there is documented evidence (wire or video recordings) of BD arranging for the three B’s (Booze, Booty and Broads) to recruits, then UNX will negotiate a settlement.

Remember, it took a NEW administration at our fine institution to get rid of the sleazy politics and clean up the Mary Easley mess. Mrs. Easley did NOT want to come before a Personnel Hearing board and have to “tell the truth, the whole truth….”. She, at Mike’s Lawyer’s urging, KNEW that if she were sworn in….it could get ugly. And, remember SHE was an attorney….and by all reports a very good one.

Remember how she milked our Dept of Culture or Tourism or whatever for the nice vacations….

Twill be interesting to see HOW this plays out.

WRAL is reported to have said, in their teaser lead in….”the FIRST of the Dominoes….” Then the main story was just fluff.

Highstick, I agree…ouch. But the quote below had me scratching my head a little”

“Who cares Davis brought the Tar Heels out of mediocrity with two 8-5 finishes before this season after starting 4-8 at North Carolina?”

Improvement from 4-8? You bet. But what is so un-mediocre about two consecutive 8-5 seasons?

  9. MatSci94 09/05/2010 at 11:41 PM #

I doubt Dave Glenn will repeat this on Tues, but he has said before that if you ‘resign’ and are get any kind of buyout, you were fired.

Based on what we’ve seen so far about BD’s coaching ability. Blake is the guy (the recruiter) that I most wanted to see go.

If the $74K is hush money, then Black Santa needs to be subpoenaed so the truth will come out. I don’t know if the NCAA attornies have that authority, but the Sec of State certainly does.

  11. statered 09/06/2010 at 12:06 AM #

Wow this really is entering mafia land. At this point I am worried they are going to end football everywhere in the state! I guess we got off cheap with Mary Easley.

Here is a quote from IC premium:

‘academic impropreities that may extend well beyond our football program into other revenue sports, dating back as far as 2005, it is still just the tip of the iceberg’

If any of this is true, could you imagine UNC vacating 2 NCAA bball titles??? I would be shocked if it came to that but its fun to imagine!

  13. hoop 09/06/2010 at 1:36 AM #

Well there are only two revenue sports, aren’t there?

This is huge. HUGE. I’m talking earthquake and tornadoes and death and destruction. If all that turns out to be true.

The words being bantered about have to make you wonder.

    Tip of the iceberg.
Big Bombs are yet to come.
Improprieties dating back to 2005 in multiple revenue sports.
    Money laundering.

Are you guys kidding? This is beyond huge. This could be the biggest scandal in the history of collegiate athletics.

    “mikeD Says:
    September 5th, 2010 at 8:37 pm
How is he still getting the $74k for the rest of the season if he is resigning? The article says it will come from football revenues, not tax money. Wouldn’t just cutting him loose without pay look better, and relieve some of the financial burden elsewhere at the school? This doesn’t really make sense to me.”

The $74K may simply be HUSH money being paid by UNC-Ch(eaters). This mornings Charlotte Observer has an article saying that Yahoo has a brochure where Blake is listed as a VP of that sports agency. They also have an interview with a former NFL player where the player states that the sports agent introduced Blake to the player as “an employee of the agency”. Only 20% of the agencies player actually played for Blake. Working for a sports agent and being a coach? Hummmmm, isn’t that a violation of NCAA rules.

If Blake was an employee of a sports agent (as stated in the article) while coaching, and steered and paid players to sign with the agent and used that relationship to entice players to attend UNC, shouldn’t UNC-Ch(eaters) be forced to forfeit all of the previous games they won while Blake was employed and they should not be allowed to finish playing this season – just forfeit the remainder of their games!

    What a cess pool!

    From today’s N&O:

“Efforts to reach Blake and Wichard for comment Sunday evening were unsuccessful. Wade Smith, a prominent Raleigh lawyer and former North Carolina football standout from 1956 to 1960, has been working with Blake.

Asked directly if Blake had received money from agents while he was coaching, Smith responded: “That’s a complicated question. I should not deal with that, with answering that, while the investigations are ongoing.”

If Wichard was paying Blake, does that mean UNC’s Associate Head Coach was a runner?

  17. mikeD 09/06/2010 at 8:24 AM #

Can they really afford to offer hush money while being under the microscope though? They will have to explain this to someone (presumably investigators). Maybe they’re in so deep they thought they should try anyways. Even though he’s gone, its still rubbing me the wrong way.

I’m also wondering about losing wins. There was an article on here about it a little while back that might have it (0-12 or 0-13 article).

  18. wufpup76 09/06/2010 at 8:38 AM #

” … ‘academic impropreities that may extend well beyond our football program into other revenue sports, dating back as far as 2005, it is still just the tip of the iceberg’”

I would be shocked (pleasantly) if this even touches the basketball program. But it’s beyond time that they get at least a cursory look-see. If there’s anything at all to the Ellington situation (or others) AND/OR academic infractions … I just can’t imagine.

In all seriousness I take no pleasure in others’ misery, but having justice and fairness served for a change is like manna from heaven.

  19. tuckerdorm1983 09/06/2010 at 8:45 AM #

to my fellow wolfpackers “don’t get greedy”

    JUST ONE OBSERVATION
BD has been bringing in top notch recruits and beating out SEC teams for those players. WHY? WHY IS THAT? COULD SOMEONE PLEASE ANSWER THAT? How many national championships has the ACC won in football in the last 20yrs? How many national championships in football has UNC ever won? Even less how many ACC championships has UNC won in football ever?. Why would top rated players in the nation come to a basketball school. Ask Mack Brown. Sure I can see some local top ranked talent staying in North Carolina. IT BEGS THE QUESTION NOW DON”T IT.

  22. newt 09/06/2010 at 9:29 AM #

The ideal outcome is for Blake to be gone and Butch to stay, because all they’ve done well at UNC is recruit (Blake).

  23. Lunatic Fringe 09/06/2010 at 10:18 AM #

From N&O article below. I had not seen this specifically stated before today other than the brochure with VP that CLEARLY states he was employee):

“Antwoine Sanders, a former NFL player from Fayetteville who was drafted in 2003, said Blake was an employee of the company and helped train players in preparation for the NFL draft and its combine.

Sanders now has his own company and trains athletes, and said he adopted a lot of Blake’s principles and methods. He said that when Wichard recruited him, he identified Blake as a Pro Tect employee and explained how Blake’s training would help him prepare for the pros.”

  24. TheAliasTroll 09/06/2010 at 10:29 AM #

McCallum, you are one funny dude.

edit: btw, on the IC board those fans are actually THANKING Blake and wishing him well.

“Thank you sir, may I have another!!” What a bunch of clowns.
