Bearcats in the sights… and TOB isn’t too happy!

WRAL posted this story this morning about TOB’s concern regarding the scheduling of the game Thursday night.

That’s when he sounded a little ticked off about the timing of the game.

“This is close to impossible. For what we had to do to leave tonight. You know the ACC, I don’t know why they did it to us but it’s a terrible, terrible thing,” O’Brien said on the Wolfpack Sports Network.

Haynes reminded O’Brien that State “kind of saved the ACC” on Saturday.

“Yeah well they offered us up as a sacrificial lamb on Thursday too,” O’Brien replied.

The ACC will be involved in four Thursday night ESPN games this season. N.C. State’s Sept. 16 game against the Bearcats is the only one that doesn’t have an open date preceding it.

Not only do we not have an open week prior to our Thursday night game, we had an AWAY game in Orlando, Florida. Such things are quite curious, and it makes me wonder why there’s so much debate over Wolfpack fans’ perpetual claim that there is no equal protection under ACC “law” with a Tar Heel (Swofford) sitting atop the proverbial conference court.

One might ask: What on earth was Lee Fowler doing when the schedules were being determined? If there was an abnormal scheduling glitch, as in we were dropped unexpectedly from another OOC team’s schedule and had to hastily find another opponent, please share it with us.

Otherwise, I see no reason to not continue looking for black helicopters and checking lampshades in the Murphy Center for bugs.

SFN Postscript: We’ve got a few conversations about both UCF and Cincy taking place in our message forums accessible by clicking here. The forums set records last week, and we’d like to keep riding and growing that kind of activity. Thanks

I think it’s time to “tear a new hole” in the backside of some of these officials that have been blatantly biased in their play calls…

And it’s also time send Ron Cherry packing!

OK – so TOB should take the Sendek route and send a really mean letter to the ACC office.

I like that he went public w/ it. He’s right to call out the conference – they wouldn’t do this to someone that they wanted to have a successful season.

  3. Daily Update 09/13/2010 at 12:02 PM #

Criticizing TOB for stating something obvious? That is over the top IMO.

He makes a good point. The ACC did us no favors.

“And it’s also time send Ron Cherry packing!”

    Amen.

I dont think he is by any means saying the win is impossible. I like how he called out the ACC for a legitimate reason. I have all faith that this wasnt some slip up, TOB is a smart coach.

  6. NCStatePride 09/13/2010 at 12:22 PM #

You know, at first I criticized Tom because it sounded like he was just complaining about his circumstances (we’ve seen glimpses of that regarding injuries last season). I don’t think TOB’s a “whiner”, but I guess I just take the old school approach of “shut-up and just play the next game” especially against a weakened Cincy. After reading his comments more and seeing that this wasn’t about Cincy, it was about ACC’s posturing of NC State, I am glad he went public with this. Someone needs to call out the ACC on this kind of stuff. I kind of wish Yow would do it rather than TOB, though, so it couldn’t be taken as TOB just preimptively complaining about this Thursday.

There’s a reason Fowler kept our budget in the Black. His response to any Thurs. night game – “Yes, and here’s where to send the check.” I doubt he cared too much about bye weeks, turn-around time, etc.

Sounds like this one may have been changed by the ACC after his watch. But if the date was changed while he was still there I’m sure he told the ACC that the change was fine with him as long as we’re still getting paid.

I’m interested in this moving of the UCF game by the Conference to a Saturday negated what was supposed to be a bye week prior to the Thursday night game.

Can anyone expand on that theory?

I’m glad that The Marine said it and didn’t send a letter. He’s a man of few words, but when he talks, people listen. And he’s right.

I just don’t like Thursday night games, especially coming off a nighttime road game. Any Thursday night game is going to limit your preparation time. Ever since the one in Charlotte vs UNC, I’ve hated them. Those games throw a team out of sync for 3 weeks, and I think it’s a major reason you don’t usually see the big boys playing on Thursday nights. If we’ve got enough money to keep paying Fouler hundreds of thousands of dollars for the next few years, then we don’t need Thursday night money to operate this program.

If the ESPN stations want us on at night, make it Saturday, not Thursday. I’m sure many loyal out-of-town Wolfpackers who buy season tickets and then have 2 Thursday night games they have to travel for are saying enough already.

Holy crap! I started going through last year’s schedule to see if any team had a similar Thursday scenario as us. Forget the ACC – virtually nobody played the Saturday before their Thursday game. And the few that did at least had a home game that Saturay. I only got halfway through the season, but I saw enough. We got hosed. If we have a high number of injuries this week, and/or our guys look like they’re running in quicksand, you will know why.

Man, some of you are really giving Cherry “the business”…

I swear that has to be my favorite personal foul call of all time. Classic.

  12. tractor57 09/13/2010 at 1:46 PM #

If the football team does the Valvano thing this fades (althought I think the scheduling is quite odd.

  13. baxter 09/13/2010 at 2:02 PM #

IIRC, we played FSU on a Thursday, and USC. I like it, I’d rather be the spotlight game, plus, if we throttle Cincy, it is going to get really good press, which we need for recruits.

  14. baxter 09/13/2010 at 2:03 PM #

Hell, even David Glenn was giving us props today… you know its bad then.

  15. tjfoose1 09/13/2010 at 2:07 PM #

“He should have raised hell about this… but not in the media.”

I’m sure he did, and was promptly ignored and brushed aside. So he makes his point in the media to bring some “sunshine” to the issue.

Besides, just as with legal issues and complaints to the police, you need to ‘file’ reports/complaints, if for know other reason, to document them.

Only way to show a pattern should such behavior continue.

  16. tjfoose1 09/13/2010 at 2:19 PM #

“There are several reasons why football games are usually not played more frequently that one per week for a team… One of the prime reasons… is to allow sufficient recovery time for the players”

Exactly. It makes a difference. Even as a youthful high school player, it makes a huge difference. There were several times, due to hurricanes, in which high school football player tjfoose had a Friday game postponed to a Monday, followed by a regularly scheduled game 4 days later on Friday.

Even as a young teenager, the body just doesn’t recover that quickly. Emotionally, physically, just wasn’t the same… almost like playing with ankle weights… no ‘pep’ in the step, harder to bring the intensity and emotion. Everything, EVERYTHING took more effort and concentration.

TOB, I believe, was speaking to the physical aspects more so than the limited time to prepare (though reduced prep time is certainly a valid point also)… the team, especially the defense, was ‘gassed’ and drained from playing in the Florida heat and humidity.

It takes a while for the body to recover, especially from playing in those conditions. It will effect not only the time to prepare for Cincy, but also the quality of the prep time since bodies will be ‘rushed’ into practice mode during the shortened week.

The slow pace of film review and the week’s first practice opponent intro walk-throughs will now have to be sped up and more intense.

All that in addition to the obvious that is brought about by an abbreviated week.

I’m glad TOB made the public statements. I don’t think it was conspiratorial, I just don’t think the concerns of NC State were even considered by the conference.

The low expectations for the Wolfpack made it easy to prioritize conference convenience and desires over any concerns of a conference also ran expected to finish in the bottom fourth of the standings.

If you allow yourself to get eff’d over, you will get eff’d over.

I’m very glad he said something.

I will take this over the “take it in the a** and like it” mentality that NC State’s admins and coaches held for a long, long time.

“Oh yes, ACC! Anything for the blues! Please punish us more! We like it!!! We’re just happy to be here because we know we can’t really compete!”

^That whole mentality can go and die a slow, painful death.

    @61packer
Isnt thursday night college football like NFL Monday night football? Plenty of “big teams” play on Thursday night. I remember a certain USC that got beat by Oregon state on a Thursday night.

  19. Wulfpack 09/13/2010 at 3:28 PM #

Just shut up and go play football. Are you excited about the national exposure or not?

  20. wolfpackdawg 09/13/2010 at 3:36 PM #

Thursday night games suck anyway. It is EMBARASSING that we play in so many of them.

  21. JVM4PACK 09/13/2010 at 3:49 PM #

Regardless of O’Brien’s comments being warranted or not. We are 2-0, there are some positives in comparison to last year with some work to still be done. Does it look like we have some of the pieces in place necessary to move forward…more than likely. I’ll be at the game Thursday night and hope Carter Finley rocks all 4 quarters with a high level of excitement. Our team needs to hear and feel our presence. GO PACK!!

  22. Packfan28 09/13/2010 at 4:39 PM #

The players will still be a little physically drained after Saturday’s game and the short turnaround, so the crowd can definitely make a difference this game. Hopefully everyone cheers loud and long Thursday night. It will give our guys a huge lift for certain.

  23. Pack Mentality 09/13/2010 at 6:08 PM #

Just man up and play the damn game. Cincy played on Saturday too.

If you want to blame anybody our last AD would have done anything to be in the Thursday night spotlight, he probably lobbied for this.

No excuses about “we’re too tired.”. Take your skirt off and play.

  24. leewolf 09/13/2010 at 7:08 PM #

I think TOB is doing two things. One he is calling out the league for putting one of their teams in a bad spot for the sake of television. Secondly I think this is part of his motivation strategy for his team. He’s telling his guys, you are up against it. Are you good enough to win under tough circumstances? I think the purpose of talking in the media meets his first criteria and behind closed doors he is going to use this to challenge his players to not be tired and play hard to show everyone else that this team is good enough to win in tough circumstances.

Someone should be sticking it to the ACC, I’m glad TOB had the balls to call them out.

I’m still pumped about the game regardless.

I like it that our coach has an opinion, and isn’t afraid to share it. Nothing wrong with that – and as noted in many of the previous posts, he is absolutely right.
    Well said Tom.
Now go remind your quarterback how he needs to play to survive Thursday. We need that offense in tip top shape to have a shot at these guys.
