Baddour asked Hawkins to “speak for them on behalf of the Carolina guys”? (Day 76)

I have to admit that the Daily Tar Heel has done some good reporting on this scandal.  There does not appear to be much new going on tonight, so I am going to go through a few things they have done recently that are worth your attention and hit issues that are sure to be continuing themes.

I particularly like this graphic because it reminds me of an RICO chart you might see in a mafia movie.  The sizing really does not work to present it well here, but you can go to the excellent DTH presentation and zoom in and out and read everything.  It is really neat.

The Daily Tar Heel also put together this article that has a quote I have not seen anywhere else:

Hawkins said he was truthful when he spoke to NCAA investigators during the summer.

“When Baddour called me and asked me to speak for them on behalf of the Carolina guys I was like, ‘Cool, they haven’t done anything wrong,’” Hawkins said. “And they still punished the guys.”

Wow!  If I’m Baddour I am not sure that I would choose the ubiquitous Hawkins as my spokesman, given that he is considered an agent by the NCAA and was arrested on felony cocaine trafficking charges in 2009.

The DTH also published this article, which has the following hilarious quote from Butch Davis.

“We’ve already put some things in place that I think are going to make us better,” Davis said before practice Thursday. “There’s things that we’re doing with the players to find out where they’re going, and some of their associations, and how they’re getting to certain places.’

Let’s translate some of that.  By “already” I guess Butch could mean “over three months after some of my players attended an agent party in Miami (that even more knew about).”  By “some of their associations” Butch could mean “agents” and/or “tutors fired by the University.”  The UNC players have jetted around so much that “certain places” could mean Miami, Las Vegas, Atlanta, or California.

More from The DTH:

Wednesday night, former UNC football player Chris Hawkins identified former UNC defensive back Mahlon Carey as the person who hosted Burney in Atlanta. It was one of three trips under review that the NCAA says Burney took.

Hawkins said he and Carey are a part of Rude Boyz, an unofficial group of former and current UNC defensive backs.

“That’s been there for a long time,” Hawkins said. “Way before even (current NFL player Dre’) Bly was there, so we try to stick together all the time.”

So now we have a group of characters potentially added to this story who have named themselves the Rude Boyz. This group may include every former and current UNC defensive back going back to the days of Dre Bly who was drafted in 1999. Also, this is the first time Mahlon Carey has been mentioned and it raises the possibility that these sort of trips/benefits could go back much further in time than the recent escapades to Atlanta, Las Vegas, Miami, and California in 2009 and 2010.

He’s wearing red and black. That means that, deep down, he wishes he were wearing red and black on Saturdays. Bless his little heart.

And more germane to the point of the article, can you imagine an NC State administrator saying something so stupid as these guys? I mean, damn! And the DTH is publishing this?!!? Wow. How many times can I say “Wow” about one string of incidents.

I hope they have some good attorneys over there in Chapel Hill. They’re going to need them.

Seems as though the DTH is doing a better job covering the story than the News and Disturber.

    @hoop

Fowler would have said ten times worse…

The DTH is doing an excellent job. They have more that will shock folks when it all comes out.

Moox: Oh really? I understand your sentiment and I don’t like him either, but seriously… Fowler would have asked a potential felon and NCAA-designated agent to speak for an NC State team? This is a far more stupid thing than Fowler has ever said. If you still believe Fowler would have said 10x worse, what would that statement be, and why do you believe Fowler would have said it?

And I believe Baddour said that simply because it’s in the Dainty Tarheel and I have not seen a denial from him.

It is interesting that there are no comments posed on the DTH story page.

Baddour to Hawkins: “Speak for us on the Carolina way” (His inferred meaning……lie, cheat, spin, misdirect and anything that might get us out of this.)

(Hawkins understood meaning……cool they did nothing wrong. Speak your mind.)

HILARIOUS. I guess you can’t call him up and say, remember you’re a tar heel. Protect your boys by lying. When you have dumb asses associated with your program, it eventually comes back to bite you in the rear.

I find it interesting that Butch Davis has one of the larger graphics on the DTH’s network map, either consciously or subconciously implying that he still has a major role to play in this investigation going forward. The graphic does a good job of linking everyone and everything back to him. Oddly enough, though, he and the tutor appear on opposite sides of the “chain.” A fool’s hope that the tutor was only an “academic coach?”

And wow, if you want this investigation to really move forward, someone put a microphone in front of Chris Hawkins. Dickie asked him to speak for the players? Did he not think that someone that would come to the surface? That move is fouler-worthy.

@hoop — as long as it is only red and black, that’s fine. Let him play for the dirty birds all he wants to. I, for one, am glad that he has never called West Raleigh home. I’d take a player like Nate Irving or Willie Young any day over a Marvin Austin.

Anybody have any idea who that person is sitting immediately to Austin’s left in the photo above?

Pack84: Haven’t thought about that. Do you know?

Typical Photo, most of them have their noses in the air.

Hawkins court date on drug charges is Oct 8th. Outcome should be interesting.

Wearing red, hat offset to the right…Does that mean that Cupcake Marve is a ‘Blood’ ???

Every picture I see of Thorp and Baddour, they just look like typical limp-wristed Carolina boys.

I sincerely hope they ALL pay dearly before this is over. Couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch.

I’m not sure what that guy is doing, but he is not using his pom-pom correctly, is he? Maybe my 3yo girl can teach him how to cheer.

Fouler would not have yielded the microphone to anyone. He has said and done some dumb and embarrassing things but – and this is a big but — the Wolfpack is not being investigated for any of this crap. He was brought in by LR and MAF IMNSHO as an interim AD and lasted well beyond his usefulness.
