Uh-O! Did Carolina go 0-12 or 0-13 in 2009? [Updated 4:20pm]

The cracks are starting to appear more prominently in the University of North Carolina’s historically famous, impenetrable cone of silence. Who knows what is next!? Maybe someone starts publicly discussing the Range Rovers that Antawn Jamison and Vince Carter were rumored to drive throughout their college career, the strangeness of the lifestyle that Hakeem Nicks experienced before his eligibility was complete, or even start explaining the specifics behind Wayne Ellington’s living arrangements while helping Carolina win a National Basketball Championship.

Outside of the Carolina family people are also now talking more openly as the cracks around John Blake, aka ‘Black Santa’ are springing huge leaks. After Yahoo! and Joe Giglio/N&O/ChltObs each shed public light on some major data points of the story (that can be reviewed with excellent conversation by clicking here) the Old Ball Coach and former Head Coach at Duke has decided to enter the fray.

As you can read more fully here, Spurrier was asked about the recent John Blake-Gary Wichard revelations. Spurrier publicly stated what many around college football have said for years – he is not surprised. He further explained:

“Let me just say this: When you’ve been in coaching as long as I have, we know the reputation of almost all the coaches out there that have been around a long time,” Spurrier told The (Columbia) State newspaper. “So I guess what I would say is that article’s not very surprising. That’s about the least I should say about it. We all have a reputation, especially guys who’ve coached 20 years or so. It’s hard to hide whatever your reputation is.”

^This point dovetails very nicely with the N&O’s article this morning that discussed the NCAA’s previous investigation of Blake and Wichard’s relationship amongst other things. Butch Davis and the University of North Carolina knew exactly what they were hiring in ‘Black Santa’ and they weren’t the least bit deterred or concerned with the potential consequences.

After Spurrier spoke to the press, the N&O’s Joe Giglio broke more damning news on the UNC-CH scandal that will result in the eradication of Cam Thomas from all future UNC-CH Christmas card lists and football reunions – if the Heels ultimately retain a program to host reunions. I can see/hear Thomas now – the moment it came out of his mouth he shut up and wanted to put it back inside. Click here for link.

Former North Carolina football player Kentwan Balmer paid for his college teammates, Marvin Austin and Cam Thomas, to travel to California in the summer of 2009, Thomas said Tuesday.

Thomas, a rookie defensive tackle for the San Diego Chargers, did not provide financial details, or the dates, but said he and Austin worked out at the Proactive Sports Performance in Westlake Village, Calif. in the summer before the 2009 season.

Reached by phone on Tuesday afternoon, Thomas, who started all 13 games for UNC in the 2009 season, said he and Austin took the trip together and “‘Twan paid for [the trip].” Thomas, the Chargers’ fifth-round pick, then declined further comment.

Balmer, Thomas and Austin were teammates at UNC for the 2007 season and each played defensive tackle. Their position coach was John Blake, UNC’s recruiting coordinator and associate head coach. Austin and Blake’s relationship with California-based agent Gary Wichard has become a part of the NCAA investigation into the UNC football program, Wichard said last Thursday.

The NCAA returned to Chapel Hill on Aug. 4 after making initial visits on July 12 and July 13 to interview an undisclosed number of players, including Austin, about receiving improper benefits from an agent.

Under NCAA bylaw 12.1.2.1.6, or more commonly referred to as the “preferential treatment” bylaw, athletes can’t receive “preferential treatment, benefits or services because of the individual’s athletics reputation or skill or pay-back potential as a professional athlete, unless such treatment, benefits or services are specifically permitted under NCAA legislation.”

Amy Herman, UNC’s assistant athletic director for compliance, declined to comment on Thomas’ statement but answered a general question about a former player providing travel expenses for current player(s).

Herman said there are no set NCAA punishments for violating the preferential treatment bylaw.

“[The punishment] would be interpretative,” Herman said, “based on the facts of the specific case.”

Potential punishments include vacating the games Austin and Thomas participated in 2009, which would be the entire season. UNC went 8-5 last year.

If the NCAA forces UNC to vacate their 8 wins in 2009 for the use of at least one – significantly key – ineligible player…then does the Tarheels’ bowl appearance get counted in their record? Do they end up 0-12 or do they still get to say they lost in the bowl and end up at 0-13? One thing is for sure…no matter what the NCAA decides, they still lost to NC State.

We’ll have a lot more on this and other developments in the UNC case in the coming hours. In the meantime, please support us by participating in some conversations on our message boards accessible by clicking here.

All of this is getting to be as exciting as Christmas morning when I was 5 years old.

    I am LOVING IT!

The Carolina WAY!!! I hope the next stop for NCAA investigators is UNC basketball.

“Is cam thomas repped by wichard?”

    No.

Not at this time, and… that doesn’t mean all agents automatically stop trying to recruit athletes away from other agents. If they’re sleazy enough to cheat, they’re sleazy enough not to respect a commitment to another agent.

After all, that’s the big picture here, what this is all about. Agents recruiting/wooing prospective NFL players outside the boundary of the rules/law.

Same with Nicks. GAWOLF’s word is good with me, but that doesn’t mean other agents didn’t try to make inroads with him during his time at UNC.

Wow, if only it was NCSU, these stories would be on every front page in the state. It’s almost hard to believe that scantions and recruiting violations are also not coming forward, but hey this is UNC we’re talking about…they get away with everything and probably will again.

“Julio Down By The Schoolyard” growin’ a pair!

That after his fluff pieces over the weekend! Guess the chance of fame and fortune outweighed the orders from above!LOL

But the real question: Will this affect the upgrades to Key-nan (as Woody calls it)?!

  6. Pack05 08/10/2010 at 7:53 PM #

    that… is so…. AWESOME!!!!

  7. wolfonthehill 08/10/2010 at 8:33 PM #

I’ll still believe any punishment when I see it.

I’ll believe that not-so-starvin’ Marvin is done when he doesn’t play a game this year.

I’ll believe that they’ll vacate wins or lose schollies (both of which should happen, and potentially far more) when the NCAA puts out a statement saying so.

    Til then………..

we need to stay focused on what matters. If the tarholes whole basketball, football, table tennis, badminton teams etc etc are suspended until 2099 it doesn’t cause us to win one more game. Sure we might snag a few of their recruits. If they were to raze UNC to the ground we still have to beat wake, duke, fl st, miami, clemson, va tech etc etc.

    LISTEN
I would take us having a 10-2 season and winning the ACC and winning a BCS bowl game and in return let the tarholes off the hook completely.

    THIS JUST IN…..

The University of NC AD’s office has released the following….

We are attempting, within NCAA guidelines, to set the record straight regarding the recent NCAA investigation. Specifically, we had NOT been notified by the NCAA about any investigation into some of our athlete’s summer coursed. We vehemently deny that certain players received preferential treatment in certain courses….specifically, “Introduction to Sports Communication”; Intermediate Sports Communication” and Advanced Sports Communication”. We have discussed this with Professor, I. Passem All, who recently joined our university after an illustrious career at Florida State University as “special academic advisor” to Ex Coach Bobby Bowden. No further details will be forthcoming as we consider the matter closed…..”

News sources (not in Raleigh) have contacted Professor All (also known to his friends and associates as E. Z. A.). EZAA has denied that he gave any extra credit for a certain football player with aspirations to provide TWO meanings to the word, Anchor Man. EZAA said that this player demonstrated unusual skills with texting and tweeting, however, the level of his experience in no way impacted his grades in the three courses. He also stated that the poolside videos and some shot off the mirrored ceilings were quite good, but not included in the course outline, therefore he could not allow them to influence the grading. He did smile and say that they were “stimulating” and had recommended the student for advance videography work with Ms. Reille Hunter on the upcoming Sex Education series that she was planning on producing. The use of two cameras (her and the student) would provide more and different views of the educational aspects of the videos.

On a RELATED MANNER, the NCAA is rumored to be investigating certain football players flight arrangements as it came to light that as students, who are technically “employees” since they earn their tuition by their atleticism MAY be exempt from reporting the private jet services provided. The NCAA is attempting to get records of the flights to Miama and California from the travel agent that did the booking, Bev & Mike’s VIP Travel Services…..

    MORE to come later…..

Joe Schad is reporting that UNC has now declared that until the NCAA makes a ruling, Little and Austin will not be eligible to play football. They will still practice but they will not play in games.

What happens if a “dirty coach” coaches?

  12. packalum44 08/10/2010 at 11:33 PM #

Don’t be surprised if Yahoo does a nice comprehensive article regarding UNC. They could have a nice follow up piece, especially with this news of Cam Thomas. I know Rivers is consoling him right now…what a dumbass for both him and Wichard to EVER speak. I figured for Cam at least that public Ivy education would have, ya know – educated.

Wichard is just another dumbass ex-football player who hangs out with the likes of John Blake. As my non-public ivy educated grandmother used to say: You are only as good as the company you keep. Chief has a full fledged fire under his ass hope his tepee has a big hole.

There is a large portion of the UNC football players during the bunting era that didn’t enjoy their college experience. They were always second fiddle and it has always bothered them.

It wouldn’t surprise me that Cam Thomas would make such statements when he has absolutely nothing to loose.

tjfoose: just because nix may not have gotten anything from his agent that was inappropriate, I guess that doesn’t necessarily mean he didn’t receive inappropriate gifts from others… boosters, former players, etc. I cannot opine about those possibilities as I have nothing to offer on that front. All I can say with reasonable basis is that his agent doesn’t strike me as the type that would even risk impropriety nor is he the sort that would dole out his hard earned cash to anyone for anything.

  17. coach13 08/11/2010 at 9:20 AM #

Maybe TOB is lagging on recruiting cause he suspects he gonna get some of those vaunted recruits of UNX ??? I would bet dollars to doughnuts Blake will not be a scapegoat willingly, and that will be problematic. He already knows how to play the race card along with other dirty tricks. Ask the Cowboys.

“Why I gotta be the one to take the fall! You knew what time it was! Cause I’m Black? Uh-uh!”.

Prescious!!! We reap what we sowe.

^Somehow I didn’t even think about the impact of Cam Thomas’ trip.

This would mean Carolina played the entire season with at least two ineligible players. That season is getting closer and closer to being vacated. Along the same lines as ‘slimy’ John Calipari at UMass and Memphis. Wow.

  19. coach13 08/11/2010 at 9:29 AM #

And as far as vacating wins…I could care less. Hey, we beat them last year. They lost their bowl game. 8-5 is nothing that special annyway. I am more focused on the future. I would much rather see sanctions, schollies revoked, decommits, allow free transfers, the whole USC gambit.

I want to see them humiliated and brought so low that it takes a couple of decades b4 anyone wants to discuss UNC football.

  20. coach13 08/11/2010 at 9:35 AM #

Last time…gotta get some work done today. THE FACT that UNC has not made any preemptive moves to stay ahead of the NCAA is a tad surprising. I mean we know, everyone else knows now. It’s time to “cooperate completely”, fess up and guilty parties fall on your swords. If Butch is not willing to do that, maybe its because he knows he too is guilty and would have to fall on that sword.

How good are their DB’s ? We could use some depth there! Free transfers anyone?

  21. Plz2BStateFan 08/11/2010 at 9:46 AM #

If the statements about the NCAA setting up secure websites that high level officials at UNC can view so they know what information the NCAA has is true, then UNC not saying anything points to the evidence being damning.

Take that with some of the comments about alumni getting gruff experiences with the UNC AD, and that he seemed to be in the company of lawyers, who knows where this is going to go.

  22. islandbreeze 08/11/2010 at 10:04 AM #

Little and Austin have “lawyer’d up” for the second round of interviews.

  23. stejen 08/11/2010 at 10:24 AM #

I am curious to know why John Swofford has not come forward with any statement? Very curious that he has stayed out of this investigation.

  24. StateFans 08/11/2010 at 10:31 AM #

IMHO, vacating the wins is important because it would also represent a step closer to future sanctions like bowl & scholarship restrictions. It appears as though their program is heading for a massive re-set very soon. No Blake. Probably no Butch after this year.

So, it is in our best interest for their program to be hamstrung in its search for a replacement. If they have sanctions, then that is difficult.

If they don’t…they have a huge stockpile of talent (potentially recruited illegally) and no sanctions in their way. They would be in a very strong position to attract a really good next coach.

  25. tjfoose1 08/11/2010 at 2:41 PM #

    GAWOLF –

Right. I’m with you. I think you understand my point, but to be clear and quash any possible misunderstanding…

Not questioning his agent in the least bit. Just allowing for the possibility of the nefarious types to act against the agent to which you refer, possibly covertly.

To be clear, I definitely did not intend to imply, either directly or indirectly, that the agent you know would in anyway be complicit in such activity.
