Sidney Trying To Lowe(r) Expectations For Next Basketball Season

Sidney Lowe must be talking to former NC State football coach Lou Holtz, a man who was infamous for effusively praising even the lightest of opponents as being world-beaters while talking about his own team as though they were elementary school scrubs picked last in PE for a game of kickball.

For example, in the July 1 online edition of Technician, Lowe stated that “You like to think they can come in right away and help you right away, but we know how tough it is in our conference. Very few guys come in and dominate as freshmen, so I don’t want to put that kind of pressure on these guys. They’re going to take some bumps, but they’re going to do more good things than bad and be great for our program for years to come.”

Lowe is referring, of course, to his incoming freshman class of players that are expected to greatly rejuvinate Wolfpack fortunes. Forward C.J. Leslie, point guard Ryan Harrow and guard Lorenzo Brown will join the core of a Wolfpack team that foundered in the early part of the season only to gather itself together late and reach the semifinals of the ACC Tournament.  They faltered and ended their season after the second round of the National Invitation Tournament, setting the stage for higher expectations for this year.

While Coach Lowe may try to ratchet down expectations, his optimism shone through when he said  “I’m excited about the possibilities, just [by] bringing in a few more players that we feel we can help us. We try to work hard every day. We definitely feel good about the possibilities.”

True enough, the possibilities are there for a great season, but the simple fact is that this year, State’s fans expect more from the Wolfpack – and by extension, from  Sidney Lowe.  Some even call it a make or break year for the coach, one where he has to take his team to the NCAA tournament as an at-large team if he plans to be around to coach the Pack in 2011-12.

Some say that pressure to win is the same pressure that caused Herb Sendek to be “fired” (even though he was asked by university administrators and top donors to stay) and that State’s woes are due to the Royal Blues of Duke and Carolina.   That’s easy to say and on the surface it may make some sense, but it’s also quite thin on any analytical understanding of the ACC or of how basketball recruiting works.  While Duke and UNC are indeed formidable in-conference foes, other schools in the conference have managed to field solid teams that are competitive night in and night out, and also, basketball recruiting is an endeavor that’s national in scope and doesn’t rely completely on in-state recruiting as does football as a component of success.  Were it the latter, State, Carolina, Duke and Wake Forest would butt heads at each and every gym across the state, but  has happened very rarely for decades.   Further, top players are not going to shy away from playing Duke or Carolina, as good players tend to want to play against other good players.  All in all, that theory fails to hold much water at all.  As a charter ACC school with great facilities, traditions, fans and media coverage, there’s no reason whatsoever for NC State to not be able to compete with anyone in country, day in and day out.  Sure, building a solid program where an annual trip to the NCAA tournament will take time, but to imply it cannot happen because NC State is unfortunate enough to be located in the same metropolitan area as Duke and Carolina is quite frankly ridiculous.

No matter what Lowe says, this season is critical to him and he surely knows it.  As SFN founder BJD95 stated in a lively thread in our forums talking about NC State’s hoops prospects for the next season, “it’s a new era. It really doesn’t matter what Lowe says anymore, only what he does. This kind of expectations gaming played well when Lee Fowler was athletic director, but I am cautiously optimistic that we have entered a “culture of accountability” phase, and that Debbie Yow has a short list for football and basketball (and isn’t afraid to use it).”

In other words, anything resembling a repeat of the last few seasons might mean a change at the helm next spring.  That’s quite simply the most realistic scenario.

But that’s next year, and this year holds a lot of promise.  While Lowe may be correct in not trying to allow fans and media to apply undue pressure on his youthful new charges, he certainly has to realize that this year is going to be one that will be a referendum on his program and tenure at his alma mater.  That’s pressure, no matter how one looks at it.

Let’s hear your thoughts: what do you think will happen next year?

Rick, I thought we had 4-12 ACC talent last year and Lowe produced better results. I based that on what a good coach would get out of the team we had which had minimal ACC talent. We have easily doubled the number of legit ACC players on our roster this year so I expect at least 8-8, but I’ll probably move that number to 10-6 if CJL qualifies and the key components of the roster are healthy at the start of the ACC season (I’m not talking about dings either…as long as no one blows out a knee, we should be ok).

Sam92, I wanted Amato out 2 years before we fired him. He was the exact opposite of Lowe…he had great talent and clearly demonstrated that he COULD NOT win with it. Once a coach has proven that, then you know he has to go because he has no chance.

If you want to blame Sidney for not recruiting enough talent until now, then that is a fair point. IMO, it is very difficult to recruit these kids to NCSU with our recent history. At the same time, it is not impossible which Sid has clearly demonstrated. Again IMO, Sid’s performance as far as W’s and L’s is based more on our talent disadvantage than his game coaching and strategic decisions.

It should be a very interesting season.

Rick, thanks for showing me my mistakes & yes i was taIking about Sendek. But you have made it perfectIy cIear that you did not care for him either. So i wiII move onto your other comments.

And you shouId have been disappointed in Sendek since he came with aII kinds of coIIege coaching experience & aIso was a head coach before coming to State.

But my point about Sidney is that anyone with some commonsense shouId have known that he was going to need a coupIe of on the job Iearning training yrs. WeII now it is beginning to pay off with these Iast 2 recruiting cIasses. So now that he has aII his pieces in pIace to pIay Sidney baII there isnt anymore excuses besides injuriers. Which it wouIdnt be a probIem at aII with this team.

  3. Conrad 07/02/2010 at 6:08 PM #

16 Packer, what coach or coaches wouId you Iike to see here & how many yrs are you going to be wiIIing to give him ? And pIs dont give me anymore of these midmajor coaches name either Iike the ButIer coach. Because we have aIready try two of them in Robinson & Sendek. So remember that those kinds of coaches wiII get eating aIive on the recruiting road & within the ACC aIso too. Whereas Sidney has aIready buiIt a reIationship with the coaches & pIayers around the country.

to all the people condemning sid about playing tracy at the 4 this year.

i guess you dont get it, this is part of the “game” by getting your guys to succeed at the next level, you get better recruits. you have to remember that part of what they sell to the kids that want to go to a high major program. especially these days when kids have to go to college for one year or go to europe, they usually commit to coaches that give them the best shot at making the nba and when dealing with 5 star recruits that we should get its about improving their draft status.. also julius has been working with both kyle and deshawn and has said both have made significant improvment.
but i have to agree if he cant get the job done with this talent its time to start looking else where.

  5. Conrad 07/02/2010 at 6:37 PM #

61 Packer, I think that you may have forgot about 1 big differents between K & Sidney. And that is K was a coIIege coach under Knight whereas Iowe came from the NBA coaching fieIds. PIus if K was such a great coach in the midwest why didnt De PauI or any of the other Big 10 schooIs didnt come after ? And how many other conference titIes did he win before coming to Duke ? PIs dont waste your time Iooking it up because it is 0.

” WeII now it is beginning to pay off with these Iast 2 recruiting cIasses. So now that he has aII his pieces in pIace to pIay Sidney baII there isnt anymore excuses besides injuriers”

On this we agree, no more excuses. Not even injuriers (sic) are an excuse this year. Time to poop or get off the pot.

“And you shouId have been disappointed in Sendek since he came with aII kinds of coIIege coaching experience & aIso was a head coach before coming to State.”

I am not sure why you keep rehashing things. I have stated unequivocally I wanted Sendek out of here. I was beyond disappointed.

Sidney Lowe does not inspire any kind of confidence in me. I hope he proves me wrong this year. If he can’t win more than 6 games in what will be an even weaker ACC this year, forget it. Debbie Yow will not stand for that, I can tell you that.

  8. VaWolf82 07/02/2010 at 10:11 PM #

“It took TIME for Sid to get the ball rolling on recruiting, and he has clearly done that.”

“I’ll go to my grave knowing Herb’s leftovers did more harm than good in Sidney’s first three years.”

I generally disagree with or question bradley’s interpretation of the past/present as well as his predictions for the future…and these are no exception. There are plenty of reasons to still be concerned about both Sidney’s recruiting as well as his coaching.

But in any event we should know if the recruiting is actually “rolling” by October and more about his coaching shortly there after.

  9. packalum44 07/03/2010 at 1:49 AM #

Bradley has been known as Sid Lowe mole for some time don’t bother ignoring him.

“I’ll go to my grave knowing Herb’s leftovers did more harm than good in Sidney’s first three years.”

My response to that statement, as odd as it seems, is so what? Isn’t it the coach’s job to figure out how to mesh talent and check egos? The great coaches know exactly how to do this. They demand respect from the very beginning, and they get it. I can’t lay all the blame on college players. Those guys may have not been the best fit for Sid’s “style” (whatever that is — I still don’t know what it is), but they wanted to win.

Bottom line: you have to win. It’s time.

    Sam92
“the bottom line is that sidney lowe is not a good coach. he was only hired because lee fowler completely botched finding a replacement for sendek and needed a hire everyone would applaud.

lowe has not performed, and will never be a great coach, and frankly i hope our upcoming season is a disaster so that lowe can get fired sooner rather than later.”

I actually believe that you are a tarhole fan on this site. Please reveal your real self.
… will never be a great coach? …hope the upcoming season is a disaster?
Absolutely no doubt in my mind where your heart is. But for the life of me I can’t understand why you would take the time to post such poison and pessimism, if you didn’t have some ulterior motive for such posting.
For the sake of argument – who would you like to see coaching the Pack?
How long would you give your choice for coach to turn this thing around?
You sound like someone who like starting projects and never seeing one through.
You put up with Herb for ten years and now want to give one of our own the boot after only four? I’d say you’re up to something sinister in your commentary. And you obviously don’t read about the program and seem to not know anything about the excitement which seems to be catching on. Where are you from Franklin street? debbie downer must be your sister.

  12. papackman 07/04/2010 at 6:29 AM #

under commit and over deliver….we all do it….the bench hasn’t looked this good for a long time….i am once again optimistic in july!! But i do think this should be Sid’s last chance…we dance or he goes.

  13. Rick 07/04/2010 at 8:28 AM #

“But no one ever said that was our only problem. I’ll go to my grave knowing Herb’s leftovers did more harm than good in Sidney’s first three years. I think they’re more to blame than anyone is willing to give them credit for”

I can believe I am going to win the lottery. That does not make it true.

So you are saying a coach that had those players for ONE year had more influence over them than the coach that had then for 3 years? What does that say about that coach?

BTW, how do Herb’s players explain last years “ninth” place finish? Or was Horner that big an influence? Snort

That is rationalization at its best.

  14. BSIE80 07/04/2010 at 10:25 PM #

Sid is stating whatever good coach should do!
He is also well respected, communicates well, recruits well, coaches well, etc. So get onboard. He will be coaching until retirement and we are very fortunate to have him…

  15. TOB4PREZ 07/05/2010 at 7:14 AM #

well said fmack… God forbid an ounce of OPTIMISM enter this fanbase’s mindset…. I’ve grown so tired of watching the same 3 or 4 posters spew the same garbage over and over in an effort to slander our coaches, yet when pressed for REASONS or asked to justify their stance…. The only thing they do is point to W’s and L’s…. And granted, that is ultimately what a coach is and should be judged on. But, a coach must have time to BUILD a program (Herb left our’s in horrific shape), and quite frankly…. We’re just now getting to the time where Sid’s fruit is starting to ripen… And these posters want to continue to persecute him for his past, instead of showing their support and OPTIMISM for better days ahead. Unfortunately, some people (they know who they are in here, and so do you- if you’re reading this)…. are just not happy, until they’re not happy.
    sad really.

  16. Rick 07/05/2010 at 10:21 AM #

First off I took your attacks and name calling out of your post. The next time you do that I will just delete the post. If you cannot state your opinion without name calling maybe you should spend more time on the monkey boards.

” The only thing they do is point to W’s and L’s”
HMMMM I wonder why anyone would ever point to this? This is a specious and ignorant argument. Sid’s record has SUCKED that is why people are not happy about it. Even you cannot deny this. We all want him to succeed but if he does not then he needs to move on. No more excuses.

” And these posters want to continue to persecute him for his past, instead of showing their support and OPTIMISM for better days ahead.”

Who is “persecuting”? How is stating a record persecution? If his record did not SUCK then no one would complain about it. He has peaked in a three way tie for 9th place.

Having stated all that. I am optimistic that he has the talent he needs to succeed. It sounds like CJL has cleared and can play so we should easily be a top 20 team. I am looking forward to see him win some. But you should not be criticizing someone for being unhappy with what he has done up to this point because frankly it has… well you know.

In a vacuum, you could count me in the camp that doesn’t see a problem with the quotes — they are fairly standard coach-speak for a team that clearly will be leaning on young players.

But last season, the summer PC quotes were a very different story — basically imploring State fans to write off last season (months before practice began) with an eye on this season when the calvary (freshmen) was to arrive. Well, they have arrived. While it’s fair to ask everyone to be patient with the young guys, it is also the case that Lowe himself firmly placed the spotlight on Harrow and Brown as the saviors for whom all State fans should wait out a pre-destined(?) lost season (’10). So having himself pointed to this light in the tunnel moment, it makes his otherwise customary coach-speak ring rather hollow.

Still, hardly a crisis or anything. This should be the watch-what-he-does season for Lowe, so I think any focus on what he says is probably mostly wasted energy. Only if you end up in an NCAA bubble-team limbo will parsing of what he says likely matter much to tip the scales one way or another on his future.
