More from National Football Post: Austin expected to be suspended; 2 more current Heels implicated

Full article here.

We’re told that Austin has been accepting money and other extra benefits, including trips to Miami and his hometown to Washington, D.C., for quite some time and has been in cahoots with South Carolina tight end Weslye Saunders, his good friend, as far as comparing notes on what inducements can be gained from agent and financial advisor interaction.

As we’ve reported previously, sources close to the UNC athletic department expect Austin to ultimately be suspended for the entire season.

We’ve also been told that Austin has been laying low since the investigation began and hasn’t been attending workouts.

An Alabama newspaper is reporting that Austin paid for Alabama defensive end Marcell Dareus to attend the South Beach party. Alabama has suspended Dareus pending an NCAA investigation.

We’ve also been told that Saunders is extremely concerned about being implicated by the NCAA if they see his text messages.

According to sources with knowledge of the situation, Tar Heels cornerback Charles Brown has asked more than one agent for money directly.

According to the agent who said he was solicited, the request was flatly denied.

We’ve also been told that Tar Heels cornerback Kendric Burney was flown to Atlanta recently to meet with two agents.

Burney and Brown are both advised by former Tar Heels cornerback Chris Hawkins, who has emerged as a central figure in the investigation.

    Uh-Oh.

This is getting better by the minute.

I can’t believe the N&O is sitting on all of this.

Kind of sad thug-punk Little might come out clean. Then again, Nate Irving can’t knock him into next week if he’s suspended.

I agree hoop, it just gets better and better.

Interesting that the article claims Little would be cleared, yet the photos showed him at the Aquagirl party. He had the good sense to pay his own way? Kind of hard to believe, given he was hanging with Party Marv. Hope the NCAA had the photos as part of their investigation. If Little is clean then fine, but would hate to see cheaters not caught.

Isn’t Charles Brown the guy in the secondary that kept running his mouth and generally acting like an ass during our game with them last year?

Look, I no longer think this is media bias or that anyone’s sitting on anything. I’m no journalist but I think what we’re all realizing here is that the traditional regional and local media outlets simply aren’t up to the task for a fast-moving story like this. There’s nowhere to send a news van and by the time people pick up their morning paper, the news is hours old.

And considering that there’s an entire generation that still relies on TV and print media for their news and weather, that’s a real shame, because they’re missing a golden opportunity to adapt.

This could actually be THE story that finally renders the regional and local traditional sports media completely irrelevant (what on earth will we do without those 30-second field-level, corner end zone highlight clips on WRAL?).

The N&O isn’t sitting on anything, they are standing in the corner with their fingers in their ears saying “LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA”

  8. Daily Update 07/22/2010 at 11:11 AM #

    ^^Agree.

The only sources on this one are on the agent side. Our local media doesn’t have strong connections to agents because they are college sports reporters for the most part. Nobody at the university level is talking or at least they aren’t willing to go on the record so they can print anything.

There’s not a damn thing that statefansnation has “investigated” that the N&O couldn’t. Particularly the twitter photo angle. They’ve chosen not to is all. Thank God, there are others out there willing to do the grunt work.

It is not a shock that we are seeing the first signs of this spreading beyond the two original players. As is so often the case when an investigation begins it spreads out and catches more and more in its net than what may have been first expected. I don’t know how many listen to Rivals radio but yesterday they were talking about thier sources saying that what many at Carolina are worried about is this spreading to include John “Black Santa” Blake. If I were a UNC fan I would damn well hope that this doesn’t spread across to other sports teams and become a full all-major sports investigation ala USC.

Just posted this in the rumors thread.

To be honest, there are so many people involved I can’t keep track. I know the N&O can’t. FWIW, Tommy Bowden just said “it’s the players fault” on TZ’s show.

I’d be interested to see how this could spread to a coach, unless he is facilitating meetings between interested parties. Is anyone aware of Blake’s NFL ties?

If you don’t think there’s bias, then you need to read the N&O opinion referenced here on the forums:

  14. Daily Update 07/22/2010 at 11:53 AM #

Grantwolf: The N&O had a huge article on the twitter stuff. I read it yesterday. It was one of the longest articles I have ever seen in the N&O sports page. Not only was there a main article, there was also totally separate opinion piece on the topic from Sorenson.

  15. hoop 07/22/2010 at 12:05 PM #

^ Doesn’t change the fact that they are biased.

Have you even been paying attention?

They don’t deserve to be defended.

  16. Packbacker78 07/22/2010 at 12:26 PM #

The reason the N&O is not taking a definitive stance is because one of their own’s son is caught up in the middle of this.

“I’d be interested to see how this could spread to a coach, unless he is facilitating meetings between interested parties. Is anyone aware of Blake’s NFL ties?”

If this thing takes this kind of turn, expect Butch to jump ship. If he’s fired, he’ll find it incredibly hard to pick up an NFL gig, and quite impossible to coach in College. If he takes another job, whether a Head-Coaching position in College or a lucrative NFL Coordinator position, he won’t pay for any wrong-doing…ala Pete Carroll or John Calipari.

I could only dream that it comes out that Blake has been drawing kids in with illegal benefits, or that Butch is implicated in all of this stuff. It’s not a reach. It would show people just how far UNC was willing to go in order to be better in football. Sold soul.

As this story keeps progressing and dragging more teams in, I think the true damage to the future of the UNC football program is occurring. UNC will become known as the leak that caused the dam to burst as far as agents, and I think people will use it effectively against them with recruiting. Here you have what appears to be a player turned runner for agents, tarnishing not just his program, but major programs outside of the conference. It has exposed questionable coaching ethics (thats the nicest way to put it), and shows that the people that should be held most accountable for your kid playing in that program have no oversight or wherewithal to protect your kids from making disastrously poor decisions. Blake is indirectly cast in the spotlight because he recruited this guy (still don’t know how he isn’t talked about more), Butch, not just poor on game day x&o’s but apparently so blind to a guy that publicly posts everything… I just don’t see how the surrounding schools don’t have a major change in recruiting success.

The big question for me is who the guilty party is within the team and/or program’s management structures. Nothing like this happens in a vacuum, so someone has either condoned this behavior or turned a blind eye to it. Ultimately, who on the coaching staff is going to take the fall for Chief and everyone else? You have to wonder how ingrained this is in the UNC football culture for the current set of athletes and just how many have been involved in this sort of activity. People learn from the behavior of others and tend to act in a similar manner…

At least with Amato, all he did was critize Akron’s admissions policies…

It makes you wonder how this will also affect the 2011 class for UNC and us for in-state athletes.

I’m sure these guys ‘paid their own way’…with the money that they got from other people.

Point is — have you or your family ever taken money from an agent or anyone who represents an agent.

Scratch that — have you or your family ever taken money from anyone other than your employer?

  21. JeremyH 07/22/2010 at 2:46 PM #

is Dean Smith conveniently “losing his memory” so that he doesn’t have to reveal damaging truths about his program that would lead to vacated NCAA championships?

  22. Alpha Wolf 07/22/2010 at 3:01 PM #

^ I doubt even the most ardent conspiracy theorist would seriously believe that.

  23. highstick 07/22/2010 at 3:22 PM #

I can’t say that it didn’t cross my mind last weekend.

  24. Pack78 07/22/2010 at 4:13 PM #

Redwolf87-Yes, Brown (#12) is that guy; IIRC Spencer burned him twice for two long TDs and he kept running his mouth. Saw him doing it at the end of the game as well, maybe the agents were aware of that when he hit them up for $$$$!
