Let the 2010 Injury Parade Begin

It is time to talk football in West Raleigh…so, it is naturally time to start talking injuries!!

If you are interested in talking football then you will find NC State’s updated ‘organizational chart’ and insightful discussion by clicking here.

It is important to make note of the following comment from ‘tjfoose’, “2-deeps going into fall camp are just as much about sending messages and creating motivation as they are about talent and on the field performance.”

That depth chart was released just this weekend; so, of course, it is time to start marking names off the list. As if the initial omission of starting offensive lineman, RJ Mattes wasn’t enough for us…today, Coach Tom O’Brien announced that starting cornerback and back-up special teams returner, Rashard Smith will not play this year.

May Jarvis Byrd please get well soon! If you need a refresher on Jarvis Byrd then please click here.

A long lost State player from another dimension in the time-space continuum?

“Kindle [Sergio Kindle, Baltimore Ravens rookie LB from Texas] fell down two flights of stairs at a house in Austin, Texas, on Thursday night. Harbaugh said that Kindle took a wrong turn after waking up in the middle of the night, resulting in his fall.”

^ Daaaayum. I’ve been disoriented upon waking before. Most of those times occurred during college, if you know what I mean. But I’ve never been so “disoriented” that 2 flights of stairs snuck up on me. I mean, think about that. How’d the dude fall down TWO flights of stairs?!?!

Did he bounce at the bottom of the first and then just keep going?

This really sounds…..gotta say it…..suspicious. I have to wonder if someone didn’t give him a little help down those TWO flights of stairs.

Did he go pro early? Maybe Mack Brown and his brownshirts paid him a nocturnal visit.

Reminds me of a snippet of “Pulp Fiction” about Marcellus throwing the Samoan out the window and thru the glass greenhouse for giving Mia a foot massage.

Jules: “You know the little greenhouse Marcellus has? [He] fell THROUGH that. [He] sort of developed a speech impediment since then.”

    Vince: “That’s a damn shame.”

Jules gives Vince a knowing nod.

Get used to injuries. I have all the faith in the world in TOB, and I think he can coach us to championships if he can keep his best players on the field. But his strength staff isn’t up to par with CTC’s. The training methodology of TR sets the athletes up for injury. Loosing starters to injury is going to happen, but if your consistently having to dig into the second and third teams for players then there is a systemic problem somewhere.

Unless TR drastically changes his training protocol, I promise we’ll continue to see half our talent sidelined.

I’m probably in the minority but I tend to agree that our S&C just isn’t up to par. We have had way, way, way too many injuries under TOB for me to think that it’s all bad luck.

The key to being a consistent winner is having quality back-ups. You gotta have depth at key positions.

We gave up 39 points a game in ACC play last year, and the corners were our weakest link. This is just horrible luck. I hope we can get to the QB…

Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t TOB keep Amato’s strength & conditioning staff? There were quite a few injuries in Amato’s time here too if I remember right. Seems to be a problem with that staff if you ask me. I shared this on here this time last year, but NC high school recruits are shying away from State because of the continual problem with injuries.

No. Incorrect. But, we did make changes over the offseason

“Byrd tore his ACL in the season-finale against North Carolina last season and is not expected to be cleared until November, meaning it’s unlikely he will play this year.”

Considering the number of seemingly “run of the mill” knee injuries that end up being career ending or at least require 2 full years of rehab, I think you can look squarely at the team doctors (I believe they changed on the offseason) and the rehab portion of our S&C program. I’ve heard that our old team docs weren’t very impressed with the folks in charge of rehab within S&C although that line seems blurry to me.

So…we enter the year without either of the two projected starting cornerbacks and one starting offensive lineman.

3 starters down to injury before the season begins

SF: Can you comment on the changes made to S&C in the offseason? I may have missed those.

If you can trust gopack.com, the strength staff hasn’t changed. The problem with TR is he relies on ballistic movements that can often be more likely to injure a athlete than make them stronger. He also emphasizes stretching way too much. Current studies show that extreme flexibility without a corresponding increase in strength will result in injuries due to hyper-extension. Believe me when I say that if we had the strength coach from Pen State you would see an immediate decrease in injuries as well as a much stronger and faster team.

And by the way, when Joe Pa retires JT will probably be available. Check out the page below for a preview of what we could have Vs. what’s our biggest problem now.
