NC State has put itself in a rough spot in the Myrtle Beach regional after falling to the Cougars tonight. The Wolfpack did make things interesting after falling behind by seven runs through five, but it was too little too late in the eighth and ninth innings.
Even with a win over Stony Brook tomorrow (which shouldn’t be a problem) the Wolfpack is in a tough spot because of the lack of depth in the pitching staff. By the end of the weekend it could be a pitching rotation by committee and that is certainly not a good thing.
We’ll see what happens Saturday against Stony Brook, but things definitely don’t look good at the moment. State takes the field at 1 p.m. Saturday. Go here for more info on the Myrtle Beach regional and the rest of the NCAA baseball championships.
State falls in regional opener
The road to the Super Regionals just got a lot tougher for NC State.
The Wolfpack fell into a deep deficit early and not even a grand slam late in the game could make up the difference, as No. 2 seed College of Charleston sprayed hit after hit around the field on its way to a 9-6 victory Friday night in regional play of the NCAA Tournament at BB&T Coastal Field in Myrtle Beach.
“We got get up in the morning and go win, then we have to move on from there,†Avent said. “It’s very important how quickly we put this game behind us.â€
College of Charleston holds on for 9-6 win
Drew Poulk’s eighth-inning grand slam couldn’t make up for the College of Charleston’s 14 singles in the first five innings of Friday night’s NCAA Myrtle Beach Regional first-round game, a 9-6 victory at BB&T Coastal Field.
The Cougars slapped out 13 of those one-base hits against Wolfpack starter Jake Buchanan and another against Nick Rice before Jose Rodriquez smacked his team’s first extra-base hit, a towering solo homer to left field, and Greg Blake added another solo shot in the bottom of the eighth.
The Wolfpack, trailing 7-0 through five innings, scored a pair of unearned runs in the sixth then added four more on Poulk’s third grand slam and his team-leading 14th home run of the season. John Gianis singled to start the eighth for the Wolfpack and both Kyle Wilson and Dallas Poulk drew walks against starter Kevin Decker, who was strong throughout his 7 1/3 innings on the mound.
