AD search narrows, six left standing

Obviously there is much more to this story than the reports out tonight, but tonight’s development is still worth discussing, even if it’s briefly. Multiple sources confirmed to Jeff Graveley (WRAL) and others Wednesday that the list of possible AD candidates has been narrowed to six. Nevermind the fact that Chancellor Woodson asked for three names, the committee headed by Smedes York gave him six. Hmmm.

I’m not sure exactly what this means just yet. It could mean that all six of these candidates are so good that the committee feels like all of them deserve a shot. But that seems way to “wholesome” of a reason so let’s go with the committee had problems coming to a consensus. Maybe some folks wanted “their guy” to be ensured a spot and therefore became unwilling to compromise. It’s hard to know at this point but hopefully more will come out in the near future. According to Woodson’s previous statements about the search, this should all be over in about a month anyway so we’ll all know soon enough.

Here’s WRAL’s report on what’s happened during the last couple of days.

WRAL has learned through multiple sources that current Wolfpack Club executive director Bobby Purcell is among the six remaining candidates to become N.C. State’s next director of athletics.

Current Appalachian State athletic director Charlie Cobb is not in the final mix of six. Cobb was a member of the N.C. State athletics department from 1998 to 2005 serving as the Wolfpack’s senior associate athletics director for external operations.

Stay tuned for much more in the next couple of days and the next few weeks.

wouldn’t it be great to have an entry discussing the latest conference realignment? or is there nothing for us to talk about since the entire ACC was basically left out of the process just hoping helplessly that we didn’t get raided

Check out the thread in the forums.

After what was at best a misunderstanding between Kay Yow and the NC State administration (and will we ever know the whole story) I will be amazed if her sister even considers being the NC State AD

I love how people who have no idea the job of an AD (evidenced by a question proposed by a poster), have never been involved in searching for a high level executive, never served on a search committee and don’t really know the people considered (with a couple of exceptions)have such strong opinions on specific people and the process considered.

I have searve on a search comittee at a D1 University for a basketball coach. The comitte had 15 members. With the number of people considered, all of us stayed busy with our assignments and were necessary to do a thorough job. Just like using a search firm; it allows you to get interst from people who you wouldn’t be able to consider through normal channels.

FYI, this isn’t like filling out an appliation at Wal Mart.

Purcell is a strong candidate but my fear with him is that far too much of the status quo will be preserved: folks like Annabelle V Myers, Wolfpack Sports Marketing and other weak and innefective entrenched bureaucrats that have prevented State from matching its potential.

Some may say he has the managerial courage to make those changes, but with someone like Gary Stokan, you get IMG and their strengths, which would help recruiting too.

Let’s bring in someone who will shake the tree HARD and take a chainsaw to the dead wood at NCSU.

Nice points there hball57 but having large numbers of people seek specific details about a candidate within their “assignment” can get lost in the fray can it not? It was not like all 15 people on the committee brought back information which would stand alone and be weighed the same as others would it? Did all 15 people have the same ability to find the information required?

Somewhere in all that human nature must manifest itself. The only way to restrict that omnipresent aspect of life is to have specific rules of order in place with a leader that enforces those rules upon the body in question (a search committee in this case) and a body in question remains devoted to the overarching goal.(void of personal agenda)

The whole “grand” aspect of finding the “best” candidate with a “vision” is a huge pile of rubbish. You’ve gotta find someone that will do the dirty work and you’ve got to have some idea as to just what constitutes “dirty work”.(basic editing seems to be a massive problem in Raleigh) Big talk is cheap, hard work is not so excuse me if I fail to buy into the “exhaustive” search slogans people throw about. Plain fact is that if everyone is doing such “exhaustive” searches then you’d never have people like Lee Fowler moving into positions he was not ready for and certainly did not grow into.

Responsibilities, obligations and follow through………..basic stuff.

BTW: St Patrick did not need a mission statement to convert Ireland.

Amen and amen again there Alpha.

    Like I said:

Caedite eos. Novit enim Dominus qui sunt eius

Review the work of the entire bunch. Those that have performed think about keeping them. Those that have ridden master over screw ups and incompetence……….kindly show them the door with class and respect.

Although many here are frustrated at the number of candidates remaining, I trust that Chancellor Woodson will make the correct choice. Based on everything I have heard and read about him (Woodson), his choice will be solid and in the best interest of NCSU.
