Debbie Yow to be named NC State AD Friday

10:00 PM UPDATE

WRAL is now confirming that Debbie Yow will become NC State’s next AD.

ORIGINAL POST

About four hours ago we hit our message forums and Twitter account guiding you that something was breaking in the search for NC State’s Athletics Director.

Around 8:25 pm this evening, the N&O’s Joe Giglio posted a blog entry titled, N.C. State AD search closes in on Maryland’s Yow

Maryland’s Debbie Yow has emerged as the leading candidate to replace Lee Fowler as N.C. State’s athletic director.

The Terrapins have won 17 national titles in Yow’s 16-year tenure at the ACC school, including one in men’s basketball (2002) and women’s basketball (2006).

Yow confirmed Thursday night that she has been contacted by N.C. State.

“N.C. State has expressed interest in me, yes, but at this time that’s all I can say,” Yow said. “It’s flattering that they have interest.”

Yow’s late sister, Kay, was the legendary women’s basketball coach at N.C. State.

Also this evening, “InsideMDSports.com” has taken the news a few steps further reporting that Yow is expected to take the NC State AD Job.

University of Maryland athletic director Debbie Yow will be introduced shortly as the new A.D. at North Carolina State, multiple sources have told InsideMDSports.com.

N.C. State could officially announce the hire Friday. A source close to the Maryland athletic department said Yow told her staff she will be in North Carolina Friday for unspecified reasons, and a news conference at N.C. State could take place as soon as Friday afternoon.

Speaking to Terrapin Club members at Thursday night’s previously scheduled meeting, Yow did not confirm that she will take the N.C. State position, but a source said was emotional in her address.

Current N.C. State athletic director Lee Fowler, who announced his resignation on May 4, will leave his post on June 30.

Yow interviewed at N.C. State two weeks ago, according to a source, but she denied doing so to The Baltimore Sun in a June 14 article.

“I have not interviewed with the N.C. State Search committee and, in the past, have likewise declined to be interviewed by other universities who have shown interest in me,” she told The Sun.

Yow, who took over the post in 1994, is in her 16th year at Maryland. Her tenure has been defined by widespread expansion and success of the athletic department and an emphasis on reducing past debt and maintaining a balanced budget.

But a recent high-profile spat with basketball coach Gary Williams and a failed attempt to buy out football coach Ralph Friedgen exacerbated tension between her, the school’s most powerful coaches and the Maryland fan base.

In her time at Maryland, the athletic department expanded to include 27 teams and became one of most successful in the ACC and the country, winning 20 national championships in six different sports since 1995.

Yow oversaw the building of the Comcast Center, which opened in 2002, and the expansion of Byrd Stadium’s Tyser Tower to include 64 suites, which was completed last year. Numerous other athletic facilities upgrades have been completed under her watch.

Her efforts in building up Maryland’s athletic department were overshadowed in recent years by often public riffs between the basketball program and the athletic department.

The tension came to a head in January of 2009, when a back-and-forth between Williams and associate athletic director Kathy Worthington spurned a media firestorm. Additionally, high-ranking boosters told InsideMDSports.com then that Yow contacted them in an effort to raise funds for a buyout of Williams. Yow denied the report.

Yow’s current contract at Maryland, last amended Jan, 17, 2007, expires Aug. 31, 2013.

Early indication, according to a source, is that Connecticut athletic director Jeff Hathaway, who graduated from Maryland in 1981 and received a Master’s from the school in 1991, would be a prime target. It is too early, however, to determine Maryland’s course of action, as it has yet to name a replacement for outgoing school president Dan Mote, who retires effective Aug. 31.

    @hball57

Lee would have said he wanted to see “improvements” but unwilling to quantify or qualify them

    @john of sparta,

of course they are happy since their revenue sports are not as strong as they used to be and everyone thinks change is great. Think they sit around and argue about Director’s Cup standings? Non revenue sports? Total National Championships?

A public run-in with Gary WIlliams would be a quite spectacle. I’m told he’s quite a cusser. Them Twerps are a cussin’ lot. I remember a Duke vs. MD game which was one of the 1st in the Comcast Center. The F word laced cussing got so thick, the game was stopped. Williams and Coach K pled with the crowd to tone it down. The TV guys had hit the dump button so many times, they were running out of delay and a few of those F word tirades went out over the air. One of the commentators suggested they might ought to change the name of the place to the Comcuss Center.

I read some of the “public tift” with Gary Williams and my main impression is that Gary is an unmanageable a-hole.

The fact that UMd won 20+ championships is good, but doesn’t necessarily translate into anything that will happen at State because of hiring Yow.

Agreed it doesn’t necessarily mean that it will happen here, but I also believe that if you have the same general manager employing the same strategies for success that there is a better chance of replicating the conditions that led to success.

One immediate opportunity Yow has is to fix up our soccer program, for example. It would be easy, relatively non-controversial and it could actually leverage the now-surging popularity of the sport here in the US. That would set the tone pretty quickly: meandering mediocrity is no longer going to get you a contract renewal. In fact, quite the opposite.

That’s not to say you can fire your way to the top, but if you can take an underperforming department of program and replace and revitalize it without generating a lot of problems, then by all means do so. Recruit a definite improvement and then place that improvement into the program. No fire and search, instead, search then fire.

Alpha, I’m in complete agreement with what you’ve posted. Khan posted earlier that there has been no empirical evidence as to why Yow is a bad hire. In that same respect, I’ve seen no real evidence as to why Maryland fans are happy with her being gone. Her track records makes Fowler’s looke EVEN WORSE than it is…which seems impossible given his penchant for complete shit. From what I can see, her biggest knock is that she’s publically had run-ins with Gary, Maryland’s non-Len Bias basketball hero. I’m sorry UMd fans…but I could have a run-in with Gary over what condiments are better on hot dogs. Plain and simple…he’s an ass.

On paper she seems very qualified. I have no problems with this hire and will support her until she gives me reason to do otherwise. Go Wolfpack.

  7. wolfpackattack89 06/25/2010 at 1:06 PM #

you can say what you want about her tiffs. at least she has some passion and intensity

I have no inside knowledge to this effect, but it also seems Woodson could be bringing her in to expand the athletic department as a whole. I personally believe one of the many reasons we do so poorly in the directors cup is because we dont participate in that many sports. I think i read somewhere that she was responsible for this same type of expansion at UMD as well. so hopefully part of her job will be to bring back sports like lacrosse, etc that will enhance the profile of the university and help us in the directors cup. Doesnt Stanford win the dircetors cup every year because they have a team in basically every sport? from crew/rowing to football.

    Alpha:

The quote that is most important IMHO from that UM bio that should make State fans excited is this one:

Regarding the many achievements of Terrapin athletics over the past 15 years, Yow says, “We are pleased, but we are not satisfied… our vision is to be one of the Top 5 programs in the nation consistently… we see no reason to settle for less.”

    Isn’t that what we want?

Contrast her attitude with Lee Fowler’s position that we can’t expect to compete with the likes of Duke and Carolina.

Even if that’s true (which I’m not willing to admit), it’s ridiculous that the ATHLETIC DIRECTOR would say it, especially in public.

I think she’ll be a good hire. She has lengthy experience in this role, and she’s been successful, not only at a D-1/BCS school, but at a fellow conference school.

I’m not sure who else we could have hired that would make us all jump for joy. I think we all feel burned out on Fowler, and we’ll believe we have a good AD when we actually SEE it (her).

I’m giving her a chance. We should be open-minded and see what happens with her. So far, I like her attitude.

    Alpha,

    Excellent post!
I’m not sure Dr. Yow was my first choice but I have come to like the idea. She has the criteria I desired – an accomplished AD not beholden to the good ole boys.

I welcome her and hope she continues to exhibit the characteristics of strong leadership.

How old is Granny Clamplett? 100?

Bush league hire! No wonder we suck!

The more I read/see/hear about this, the better this hire looks.

“It isn’t enough to talk about. It’s about doing and achieving.” – D. Yow, AD

“Bush league hire! No wonder we suck!”

Maybe not so bush league. Only time will tell.

“Some good reading for you boys:

Yow is known for her goal-oriented and proactive management style. She consistently inspires and challenges those around her to “raise our sights and sharpen our tools… to work hard and work smart… to recognize that our only limitations are those that we place upon ourselves.”

Dr. Yow is known as “a coach’s A.D.,” while also being highly organized and a strategic and proactive leader and administrator. Quite simply, Debbie Yow personifies the relational and management dynamics that are necessary to be an excellent administrator and leader.”

So her bio, on the website of the department that she runs, is complimentary? Well, that certainly satisfies any questions I have.

She’s 62 years old. Her reputation among people I’ve talked to is as a micro-manager. She is not on speaking terms with the men’s soccer coach who has won many of those national championships. She’s been trying to get out of Maryland, and most people there are glad she is gone. Are we not at least well-positioned to understand what that means?
People who are skeptical seem to have some reason to be.

  15. tractor57 06/25/2010 at 2:35 PM #

Just maybe we NEED a micro manager to change the culture.

There are issues of course but name one major college AD we could hire without issues.

  16. elvislives 06/25/2010 at 2:44 PM #

62 years old, thanks I couldn’t find that info elsewhere. My guess is this is a five year tenure at best. Hopefully she will get the house in order, change the tone of the previous debacle and her legacy will be as one that helped return NC State to athletic relevance. The Athletic Department will likely be in a much better position after five years of her guidance. It certainly couldn’t be much worse (see Director’s Cup rankings from the last 10 years).

  17. Prowling Woofie 06/25/2010 at 2:49 PM #

    Great post, Elvis…

I just saw mention of her as 58, not 62. I’m sure someone can come up with a bio that has the correct age !

  18. Plz2BStateFan 06/25/2010 at 9:04 PM #

    Great hire. Pumped

She’s 58 – AP is more reliable than an internet poster. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/news/story?id=5327714
