On the Rhode: Mabry chooses A-10
Rocky Mount High basketball star Tashawn Mabry is going to the University of Rhode Island — not N.C. State, which was his top choice two weeks ago.
Mabry, a 6-foot-5 small forward, told the Telegram late Wednesday night that he signed a letter of intent to play for the Rams on what was the final day of the NCAA signing period.
“I’m real excited. Overall, when I went up there, I liked the campus and the coaches. And one of the guys I already knew (Akeem Richmond). It seemed like a good fit for me,†Mabry said over the phone.
Mabry, whose main recruiter was URI assistant coach Kevin Clark, said he made his final decision between five schools: Rhode Island, Charlotte, Clemson, N.C. State and the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
He didn’t mention Jacksonville or Wyoming in that final list, but said they were in his top four a week ago.
“Everybody’s real down to earth (at URI). I knew they have a good tradition. A couple guys played there that went to the NBA (Lamar Odom and Cuttino Mobley). I’ll be able to get a lot of exposure and play a good schedule in the Atlantic 10,†Mabry said.
