FOWLER’S GONE!!! (Updated 5:00pm, Woodson Takes to the Radio)

Joe Giglio at the N&O deserves the credit for being first to break the story. PLEASE click on the link to the story so that the journalist who broke the story can get all of the traffic/credit as possible. It is only fair.

Lee Fowler and N.C. State agreed to end their working relationship today after Fowler served almost 10 years as N.C. State’s athletic director.

Fowler, 58, will continue to work through June 30 and will receive payment for the remainder of his contract, which is worth $280,000 annually until Sept. 2013.

There will be A LOT more to come!

Do us a favor and check into this entry with a comment just so that we can see how many people we can get to reply/rejoice on the blog. Let’s make this the most commented entry in the history of SFN! (meaning that we will need more than 500 comments!!!) Additionally, please don’t ignore our message boards as a place to discuss all sorts of tangential items related to the recent developments.

Congrats, again to Joe Giglio for getting the big scoop and congrats to SFN for being first!

Looks like the new chancellor and Board of Trustees is more aligned as members of the lunatic fringe and “HateFansNation” with this move towards wanting to finally do better in West Raleigh. So, by criticizing us in recent years & months you have been criticizing and taking an opposing position of that of our own Chancellor and Board of Trustees!?! WOW!! Please tell me who is the “lunatic fringe” now? How does it make you feel to not be a part of the new ‘status quo’ and to be a “Hater” for not agreeing with the direction of the University?

1pm Update: Fowler’s Statement

“Naturally I am disappointed that I will not see firsthand the fruits of 10 year’s work, but I have the greatest confidence that with the caliber of facilities and coaches we now have, along with a talented and dedicated administrative staff, the athletics program is poised for great success going forward.

“I thank Chancellors Fox, Oblinger, Woodward and Woodson for the privilege of working under their excellent leadership. I want to thank and acknowledge Donn Ward and the great NC State faculty for their unwavering support.

“Additionally, my family and I want to express our thanks for the outpouring of love and support we’ve received. Finally, I thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for His faithfulness in guiding my decisions and look forward to what His blessings will bring to NC State and me.”

4:30pm Update: Fowler Knew The Deal In March

NCSU chancellor: Fowler knew of job status since March – Triangle Business Journal:

Lee Fowler has known since March that his run as athletics director at North Carolina State University would end June 30, Chancellor Randy Woodson said Tuesday afternoon.

In a telephone interview a few hours after the university announced Fowler’s resignation, Woodson said that former interim chancellor Jim Woodward informed Fowler in March that the university would part ways with the athletics director by June 30.

Woodson added that the timing of the announcement was left up to him.

Fowler’s performance has been heavily criticized by many Wolfpack fans, which was a major factor in the decision to go in another direction.

“The ability for him to continue to be successful in this environment is clearly compromised,” Woodson said of the public sentiment about the athletics director.

Of the fans, Woodson said, “They’re hungry for success, and that’s where you’re getting a lot of the vocal criticism.”

Woodson said that he decided to put off an announcement until after May 1 to give Fowler a chance to find a new job somewhere else.

5:00pm Update: Woodson responds

My God I love this guy! He’s a no BS leader who is the right man to take NC State in the right direction. Although the ball started rolling under Woodward, Woodson “did the deed.”

Listen here to 99.9 the fan pitch a few softballs to Chancellor Woodson until Randy himself backed up the conversation to give his reason WHY NC State needed to move forward.

99.9: [Lee Fowler homering]… What are you looking for in the successor?

Chancellor Woodson: Well let me start by saying that I couldn’t agree more with you that Lee Fowler over the 10 years he’s been here has done much to transform athletics at NC State and I would certainly start with facilities. And that’s been… certainly a lot of contributors have supported us in that regard, but we’re a very different place now than we were 10 years ago in terms of competing for outstanding talent both in terms of coaches and athletes. But with those facilities comes expectations. And I don’t think there’s any doubt that NC State Athletics is not where we want it to be in terms of competing at the highest level athletically and success in the classroom. Our graduation rate is not where we would like it to be in terms of academics. Those are the things that I’m always going to hold an athletic director accountable for. Number one, you gotta be able to manage the budget, you gotta live within your means, you gotta grow revenue and you gotta be successful on the financial side. Number two, you gotta build and maintain outstanding facilities that allow you to compete. And then finally you gotta compete. And the competing is, again, athletically and academically.

Let this be a mandate from Chancellor Woodson to NC State’s next Athletic Director: The status quo is unacceptable. We will not take our role as being 3rd place in our own backyard. We will expect to be able to compete with Duke and North Carolina, something that our former AD relegated as an impossibility.

I am sure Woodson’s requirement goes much further than regional success.

It is the fist time that I have looked at the horizon and saw hope for NC State’s Athletic programs. I say this, because I have full confidence in the guy behind the wheel leading this ship.

and congratulations to the good people in Starkville for apparently passing on this opportunity of a lifetime for themselves.

  2. tractor57 05/04/2010 at 4:36 PM #

10 years ago Fowler might have been the right choice given the finances of the athletics department were in a shambles. Ok that corrected but there was never the move back to relevance. With the general housecleaning in Raleigh maybe just maybe there is a different attitude.

I’m certainly NOT a Fowler apologist and I do think the time for actions was about 5 years ago.

i’m not a religious man, but hallelujah!

This is a step that had to happen before anything else could. Now it all comes down to who they select as the new AD.

I confess that I am afraid. I am afraid that the BOT will select someone from with the state old boy network and we’ll be saddled with another dud.

But why not be hopeful? Maybe we’ll hit a home run — someone young-ish, energetic, ambitious and hungry. someone motivated to succeed – measured by conference championships. someone who’s not afraid to fire coaches. someone charismatic who can raise money

  4. UnclePen 05/04/2010 at 4:47 PM #

    Chuck Amato for AD!

  5. wufpup76 05/04/2010 at 4:49 PM #

    HEY-ooooooooooooooooooooo!!!

Thanks for your efforts and good luck.

God Bless (no really, God Bless … yeah, yeah I know – that’s ‘his’ signature, but it’s over)

  6. tractor57 05/04/2010 at 4:57 PM #

    Uncle Pen –
    “Hush your mouth”
I think it is time for a top flight, proven AD.
We can do without the red shoes.

You know, I had a massive poop early this morning that really took forever to come on out of there. But once it was out, I FELT GREAT.

THAT POOP WAS AN OMEN. Today is a day for cleansing, cathartic release. It took for bloody ever, but it happened.

No more StatusQuo, no more ‘Coach’ … please tell me the State-hating, self-serving GOB culture is next on the chopping (pooping) block.

One small step for NC State athletics … one giant leap for fankind.

^Or maybe that should be reversed?

  8. caniac45 05/04/2010 at 5:15 PM #

as my roommate said today: “why does all this happen the year AFTER I leave?”

atleast its happening at all. thank goodness.

  9. whope90 05/04/2010 at 5:17 PM #

Why is fowler getting credit for fund raising and the improvements in carter-finley and rbc? i thought alot of that was via Chuck Amato not him?
If i were tom ‘o brien and el sid, i would not sleep until after the season when i won a bowl game and went deep into the ncaa”s. There are NO EXCUSES
now! New AD great basketball recruiting class and fourth year of the football coach with a rebuilt defense and jon T. in’s al around or it is out the door for you and that is the way it should be!!!

If i were UNC, i would be shaking in my boots!! The Administration at State have woken up like that United States after pearl harbor, this hopes to be the awakening of a great sleeping giant!! To bad it took ten years, eight years too long i think!!

  10. TheCOWDOG 05/04/2010 at 5:19 PM #

Not to add thought to the day, but did anyone hear Woodson on 99.9 about 45 min ago?

Wow! Knocked this old guy’s sock’s off. Very, very impressive.

Mark Thomas, as two exs, we need a come together meeting. See you at the next reunion, where I feel confident that I won’t have to hear an AD flap for 30 min on how I need to raise my “efforts” for the program. I cannot begin to explain how many of us 70’s guys loathed going to them for that reason alone.

An AD is not supposed to be the be all end all front man for RAISING MONEY!!! Please some of you, get it thru your head. The brainwash must be stopped now.

  11. Wulfpack 05/04/2010 at 5:23 PM #

Well, that didn’t take Woodson too long now did it! Just awesome…

    “Chuck Amato for AD!”

Thanks, but no thanks. We need someone who has proven they can do the job, and need someone to bring an objective view of the entire department. This is no time to take yet another risk…

  12. Grumpy Llama 05/04/2010 at 5:26 PM #

I am certainly going to be celebrating tonight with a cocktail or seven.

Fowler’s performance has been heavily criticized by many Wolfpack fans, which was a major factor in the decision to go in another direction.

“The ability for him to continue to be successful in this environment is clearly compromised,” Woodson said of the public sentiment about the athletics director.

I don’t mean to look a gift horse in the mouth, but something bothers me about this. The way Woodson worded this leaves me feeling that if the fans had kept their mouths shut, that maybe they wouldn’t have removed Fowler.

So it’s not his pizz poor job performance that got him canned. It was the public sentiment against him that got him fired.

That doesn’t quite sit well with me. I’d like to think they’ll remove people that do a horrible job without being prompted by the cries of the masses.

    Having said that, WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

Now if the administration will just be kind enough to hire a great AD to replace him. I’m afraid they’ll just bring in another azz clown, because I believe our problems go higher than one bad apple as our AD.

  14. packalum44 05/04/2010 at 5:30 PM #

Chancellor Woodson gave a tremendous interview. This is what excites me more than the firing. This is Change You Can Believe In!!!

  15. whope90 05/04/2010 at 5:37 PM #

    Bobby Percial !!!

Things are finally turning around, thank god.

  17. .spree. 05/04/2010 at 5:43 PM #

Wow, just got off work that is great news.

  18. coppertop 05/04/2010 at 5:44 PM #

    bobby Purcell for AD!
He’s the reason behind the facilities, the WPC has been recongized as a national leader and was featured in the Wall Street Journal. Heck he grew the size of the organization during the recession with medicore results. I can’t think of a better adminstrator for the job if he wants it.

  19. bradleyb123 05/04/2010 at 5:47 PM #

State will do pretty good in football/basketball in the near term assuming all the bad luck is behind them, like injuries. Fowler is leaving a good program behind that he built. I’m sure he won’t be given credit for the wins next season. But, I hope this site is still around a few more years. With Fowler gone, funds will dry up and I want to come back in 2013 and laugh at you internet idiots. The idiots who think they can run a D1 Sports Program.

Mort, a couple of things. Fowler gets no credit if Sidney succeeds. Because succeed or fail, Fowler STILL botched that coaching search and we ended up with our 4th or 5th choice. Hopefully that ends up working out for us, but if and when Sidney succeeds, it will be DESPITE the ineptitude of Fowler!

Similar situation with TOB. He chose us, not vice versa. And Fowler nearly botched that one, too. TOB ended up calling us to see if the deal was on. I guess Fowler was too busy fishing to pick up the phone and make that call. TOB was a case of a blind pig finding an acorn. So even if and when TOB succeeds, Fowler would still be a blind pig.

And you’re mistaken if you think funds will dry up with Fowler gone. How many people on here are already signing back up to give to the WPC now, JUST because of this news. Plus, what makes you think the NEXT guy won’t get any funds for the university?

Just be happy with the rest of us. This is a VERY good thing that happened today. Because other than the hiring of Kellie Harper, the improvement of our fuhcilities, and the fundraising to which you alluded, I can’t think of anything Fowler did right. An adequate replacement will easily accomplish those same things.

Outstanding news! I will be drinking heavily tonight!

  21. wirogers 05/04/2010 at 5:56 PM #

It was a long day (that time of year for us ag majors); however, I come home check the computer and had to sit here awhile to compose myself. I cried, we are free, free at last. For the first time since I started school at State in 1983, I truly feel we have a leader in the Chancellor’s office and a glimmer of hope for our athletic program. I am so giddy; I do not think I will be able to sleep tonight.

  22. TOBtime 05/04/2010 at 6:04 PM #

Finally. WPC here I come after being absent for many years.

Have not been able to read the comments yet, so someone may have already noted this, but this will likely be LF’s greatest fund raising scheme yet.

Very good day to be a Wolfpack fan.

    +1

I just sat through that whole song, bobbing my head to the music and smiling. What a good day this truly is!

Anyone who says this is bad for the university is either lying, or they have sour grapes at good news for NC State.
