A fantastic ending to the best week

What in the world is going on? Let’s go back and look at what has transpired this week.

1. CJ Leslie re-commits to the Wolfpack and signs his LOI.
2. Chancellor Randy Woodson announces that Lee Fowler will no longer be the athletic director after June 30, 2010.
3. So much enthusiasm and positive energy, not to mention positive press, is surrounding the Wolfpack nation.

And to finish it off, former Wolfpack golfer Tim Clark won the Players Championship today at Sawgrass. It is Clark’s first ever victory on the PGA Tour, although it is his fourth worldwide title. The tournament is the generally known as the 5th major, and has the largest purse of any tournament. Clark, who shot 66-67 on the weekend, made the largest weekend comeback ever to win the Players Championship.

Clark had played in 205 PGA tournaments without a victory. He had 8 runner-up finishes to his credit. He was generally considered the best player on tour without a victory. He was second at the Masters a few years ago and finished second last year at the Colonial, losing in a playoff.

The purse at the Players Championship this year was $9.5 million. Clark walked away with a cool $1.71 million.

He started the day 3 shots behind Lee Westwood, but starting on the 7th hole, birdied 5 of the next 6 holes to take the lead he would never relinquish. Once he made a 8 footer for par on 18, he had to wait to watch the last couple of groups come in to see if his 16 under would hold up for a victory or if he would be in a playoff. Lucas Glover, Westwood, and finally, Robert Allenby, all tried to match Clark’s score, but all fell short.

Fellow competitors are very happy for Clark, who all knew he would enter the winner’s circle soon, but didn’t know when it would happen.

“You wouldn’t find one guy in the locker room that wouldn’t say he was going to win soon, and he deserves it,” Glover said.

Congratulations Tim Clark! Wolfpack Nation is proud of you!

I’m still banned on nearly all message boards.

Must be some sort of gift I have going.

In other news: I caused a guy wearing a unc hat riding of moped near Blairsville Ga to spin out when I swerved at him yesterday.

I also consider any bad luck that occurs in an area located about 20 miles west of Raleigh on I -40 to be our good fortune

This was great theater – and it’s also the perfect example of why I’ve come to love watching golf so much.

You had Clark – trying to win his first PGA event- coming from behind. He makes some great shots to keep the lead…but he’s up 2 strokes w/ 4 holes to play – and one of them is a likely birdie hole.

Allenbey misses 2 putts by less than 2 inches…while Clark is prepping for a playoff.

It’s great drama – and the best part of it all. THERE ARE NO OVERZEALOUS OFFICIALS IMPACTING THE OUTCOME OF THE GAME. Very enjoyable.

I told another WPer at Church that it was finally a great week to be a WPer for the 1st time in years. Good news for us and bad news for our adversaries! ….and that was before the Clark win!

McCullum, I went to Teeters to pick up a couple things yesterday and a young couple decked out in unx geara was really making a scene at the self check-out. They pushed some wrong buttons got the gal to come and clear it all up, then put ina debit card then put cash in (guess they didn’t have enough on the card), then claimed they put in $10 but only got $5 credit.
Told Mrs GC that unxers like that are proof positive that my opinion of them is 100% correct.

BTW, is the Owenby Co still in business in Blairsville?

  13. McCallum 05/10/2010 at 8:24 PM #

I’m not sure if the Owenby Company is in business or not though the name does ring a bell.

I’m further south of there in this God forsaken state. Mountain property values are dropping and I was up in that God forsaken area looking at some big wheels that have went flat busted.

These Georgia knotheads are really something. They pull for UGA in all the sports they are good in (football and gymnastics) and could really give a rat’s “you know what” about everything else.

A number of UGA football fans, unc basketball fans lurk in this God forsaken state.
