Technically speaking, it has been a very bad month for NC State

One of the ways that you can gauge the temperature of any topic is the attention that topic garners from seemingly unrelated corners of the world.

With that^ description as our guide…NC State – particularly Lee Fowler – is having a rough go of things recently.

(1) First, the comedians at Frumpzilla highlighted a recent story from Engadget, a mainstream digital community focused on technology. Engadget wrote a story about how N.C. State University’s refreshable Braille display could revolutionize reading for the blind.

As Frumpzilla said, “Isn’t that wonderful?!? I’m no tech guru, or I’d tell you all about it myself. Instead, I’ll just point you to Engadget’s story about this promising advancement prior to getting to the real point of this post…after reading the last couple lines of Engadget’s piece on keeping the blind from leading the blind, we now know things may or may not have gone national:”

We’re told that the researchers have already presented their findings, and if all goes well, they’ll have a fully functioning prototype “within a year.” Here’s hoping a suitable replacement to Lee Fowler is also unearthed during the same window.

Wow! Thanks, Engadget!

(2) If you’re one of the growing thousands of people that now use our vibrant message forums for real time news every day, then you probably have seen this thread focused on the national story of the Apple employee who mistakenly left the prototype of the new iPhone in a bar earlier this week. If you haven’t seen it…that employee is a graduate of North Carolina State University. (Link)

(3) …and…as if those two technical blunders were not enough…Forbes.com just completed a countdown of the richest fictional characters in American culture. How is that guy cut so many corners, stay so cheap, and fail at everything he tries while having all of that money? Does the embarrassment ever end? In regard to your first point, I would say that anything that highlights the need for a new direction in NC State’s Athletic Department is a good thing for NC State. Lee Fowler having a rough go of things in various media outlets is not necessarily bad for NC State overall. In order to eventually alleviate a problem, a light must first be shined upon it.

    Soooooo……

Anyone catch “America’s Most Wanted” tonight (saturday night)? A guy who had killed his wife and mother-in-law, then went on the run, ended up in Concord, NC. After living homeless for a time, he was befriended by a very generous family (they did not know his real reasons for ending up in Concord) and he received clothing, food, and at times shelter (at least once during a snowstorm) from them.

Apparently this is how he came to be in possession of the bright red sweatshirt reading “NC State Wolfpack” in big white letters that he was wearing when he was located, cuffed and taken into custody for double murder. The father of the family happened to see him profiled on AMW, recognized him from his photo that was shown, and called in the tip.

Not a big deal at all, of course. But given the rest, as outlined above, it did make me cringe a little bit, LOL.

I think I like it better when the fugitives are wearing their “UNC” gear, as they most often are.

EDIT: Forgot to say that I have to agree with Cosmo. A little discomfort now will be totally worthwhile if it is in the interest of long term benefit and improvement. Also, I never realized how much LF really does look like Jed Clampett AND Sgt. Shultz. The resemblance really is uncanny, to coin a phrase. The three of them could seriously pass for long lost brothers!!
