Fowler Friday – Horse is out of the barn

You need to accept that you will be doing a lot of reading today. It will be worth it.

You may have noticed that after we ran two long “Lee Fowler” entries in the middle of March, we made a strategic decision to not lead with any rumors or speculation on what we were hearing on the ‘Lee Fowler front’. For now, we will aim to continue with that strategy and will simply execute on ‘in-filling’, analyzing and commenting on what other media sources throw into public consciousness.

After we piggybacked WFNZ’s report last night with this key update, the first public acknowledgement from the ‘mainstream’ media of what we have recently been laying out on the blog and message boards in recent weeks hit the Triangle Business Journal in this article that has now been picked up at WRAL.

When you read it, you realize that the article really doesn’t offer a lot of new information or insight. It recites basic background of the Lee Fowler situation at NC State after sharing the first leak into the ‘mainstream’ of the rumors we have been sharing for a couple of months:

The days of Lee Fowler’s reign as head of North Carolina State University’s sports programs appear to be drawing to a close.

Several sources with ties to the university say Fowler, top university officials and the school’s board of trustees are working on a strategy that would end his decade-long tenure as athletics director. The sources say Fowler is being given time to find another position, should he choose to do so, at which time his departure from NCSU would be announced.

The article is particularly significant because it is a public acknowledgement of what was previously only (alleged) ‘rumor’ regarding Lee Fowler being pushed out at NC State. Think about this is a game of politics…and I think we can be happy and optimistic that things have evolved to a point where some trustees &/or others at the University have now decided it is the right time to leak this news and publicly step on the accelerator.

Allowing TBJ to throw this into the public consciousness and create pressure on Fowler is quite a step. TBJ doesn’t name sources. They don’t name specifics. What happened here is that people in the know chose today to give TBJ the greenlight to throw this out there.

IMHO, the horse is out of the barn. The fire is raging and the momentum for change is inevitable. There is no turning back.

Presuming that a change at NC State is imminent – gee…that sounds like a great message board thread that maybe someone should have posted almost two months ago – the question and focus turns to how will the change play out?

Currently, there appears to be two potential routes of departure for Lee Fowler:

(1) A manufactured job in local private industry that we highlighted last night:

Since we ran that entry in March, it has become almost common knowledge amongst many in/around Cary that a very wealthy and close personal friend of Fowler’s has manufactured an empty-suit role in private enterprise available for Fowler to ‘gracefully’ step to as he ‘choose’ to ‘retire’ from Athletics and NC State as he was excited and motivated for a new challenge and chapter in his career. (There is no reason to go deeper into this unless that ever becomes reality.)

(2) Mississippi State Athletics Directorship

A little more research into the Mississippi State opportunity yields some interesting information and makes me wonder how legitimate the opportunity could end up being for Fowler.

As you can see from this document, “Parker Executive Search” of Atlanta (link) has been engaged to run the MSU AD search process.

This link will take you the biography of Dan Parker, the managing partner of the firm:

Dan earned a Bachelor and Master’s degree from the University of Georgia and has been recognized for his dedicated and loyal service on the Executive Committee for the University of Georgia’s Alumni Association. He is a graduate of Brewton-Parker College, where he served as a trustee and was selected Alumni of the Year. Dan was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters in 2007 by Brewton-Parker College. Dan has also served as an adjunct professor at Middle Tennessee State University.

Gee…Middle Tennessee State University? You mean, the same Middle Tennessee State University where Lee Fowler was Athletics Director before NC State? Wow! That is awfully coincidental?

Here are a couple of other Dan Parker/Lee Fowler links of interest:

1. Parker Executive Search discussed by Vawolf82 in 2007 in regards to Lee Fowler not hiring a search firm in the hiring process to replace Herb Sendek.

2. Middle Tennessee State used Parker to hire Lee Fowler’s replacement in 2002!!!

“With the help of Dan Parker from Baker, Parker Executive Search Firm, a pool of over 50 applicants was identified, and those individuals were considered from a nationwide group of individuals.”

Dr. Sidney McPhee (led MTSU AD search)

This begs the question, is Dan Parker simply throwing a bone to his old buddy, Lee Fowler? Is Fowler really a viable candidate at MSU or has he just been able to position himself for another round of interviews through the good old boy network? We know that Georgia, Tennessee, Ohio State, San Diego State and a handful of other schools have passed on Fowler in the last decade. Is there any reason to think MSU will ultimately be any different?

We don’t have any answers. But, we will always be willing to ask the questions.

I love this site…the only issue…our posts about Jed can easily be found on google, even by potential suitors for Lee. The story has it correct, he’s one heck of a fund raiser.

Greywolf, I may be mistaken. But I think that the $280,000 is what the State of N.C. pays the AD, and that it can be supplemented from private sources (e.g., WPC) to provide a competitive compensation package. If I’m correct, money should not be an issue.

I’ve been a loyal fan for over 40 years. After ranting about Lowe and his staff for the past four years, I changed my tune and started calling for Foul-er’s resignation in 2010. His departure will help my blood presure more than any Rx.

Recruiting is just the start. Syd still needs to show me he can coach. I live in hope.

Greywolf makes a great point about AD compensation, but one reason for optimism on that point is Woodson’s background. The prestige programs in the Big 10 (+) have got to pay comparable to any school anywhere. With their own TV network they rake in a ton of income. So he’s not going to get sticker shock when the subject comes up and the guys he is looking at wants a great deal more than LF.
We’ve proven the willingness to financially support the program at a high level, let’s not step away from the edge now.

One interesting note on the radio yesterday. The guy that broke the story was asked, “Do you think the subject of replacing the AD was brought up soon after Woodson was hired?” His response was, “Absolutely. There is reason to believe that may even have been discussed before he took the job.”

Not to beat a dead horse, even if it is out of the barn, but this quote:

“I’ve worked hard to make (N.C. State) the best it can be. There’s not one day in my 10-years that I’ve regretted.”

I mean, damnit! That’s the whole problem! He thinks where we are is the best we can be. We need someone that aspires to be the Very best, in Every sport, Every year.

And from earlier post by PoppaJohn:
“and don’t bring someone from Purdue”

I wouldn’t be too quick to dismiss Morgan Burke from Purdue. I agree we need a national, all inclusive search, but I wouldn’t mind if Burke was included. I will copy from the Forum Thread “Fowler Replacement Wishlist ”

    Morgan Burke, Purdue

One of several administrators on my list that is currently employed at their alma mater, Burke has led the Boilermakers’ athletic programs since 1992.

Purdue boasts more Big Ten men’s basketball championships than any other school (21 so far), including a three-peat under Burke’s direction in 1994, 1995, and 1996. Burke is also credited with popularizing the “succession plan” nationally after using it to hire the school’s latest basketball and football coaches.

Most notably, Burke lured away former guard Matt Painter after only one year as the Southern Illinois head coach to serve as coach-in-waiting during Gene Keady’s final season in West Lafayette.

Painter’s early arrival to Purdue allowed him to get a jump start on the recruiting trail, and Burke’s creative and unorthodox hiring process paved the way for Painter to sign a star-studded class that included eventual All-Big Ten performers Robbie Hummel, JaJuan Johnson, and E’Twaun Moore.

As a Boilermaker alum, Burke seems to recognize the importance of keeping Purdue-grown talent close to home. In addition to snagging Painter after his 25-5 debut at SIU, Burke brought back another former player, Sharon Versyp, to head up the women’s program.

Versyp had just completed her first year at rival Indiana when her alma mater called, and the results have been spectacular. Versyp has delivered back-to-back Big Ten Tournament championships and a pair of Elite Eight trips in her first three seasons under Burke.

Bozo the Clown can be included in the search, as long as Uncle Jed is shown the door !

As made plain in his quote, he aspires to mediocrity !!!

How many of us would go into a job interview saying “I want to make this company 61st out of 66 in the industry”, and expect to get (or KEEP) the position ?

That’s where we rank among BCS schools in Director’s Cup standings…

@Alias — If Jules became our AD, we’d have to change the “Red Means Go” campaign to “When We Hungry We Eat.”

  11. highstick 05/01/2010 at 12:01 PM #

Lee actually showed up at a WPC Caravan? Wow! Must have brought Kennel along to be that one supporter that “came up to him”! Jeez, what a sleaze!

  12. PoppaJohn 05/01/2010 at 1:35 PM #

So noted Foz, I had no knowledge of the Purdue guy – my only point was that we should not limit the scope of our search. In other words, don’t do it the easy way. Shoot for a star! If he’s at Purdue, great. I know he’s not the guy we have here in Raleigh.

WHEN Fowler is gone, I look forward to SFN telling us–at the appropriate time of course–which folks finally took action to make this long overdue departure take place. As long as this saga has been going on regarding Fowler’s rumored departure (for over a year), this must be a heckuva story.

Some person, or group of people, in a decision-making capacity finally said enough is an-effing ‘nough.

We are a persistent bunch, aren’t we? When this is over, we need to get golf shirts, tee shirts, hats, etc. that say “Proud Loyal Member of the Lunatic Fringe” and we need a song to sing at every game to proclaim that after every victory!!

Got any song writers in the “Fringe”?

Goodbye Lee. The gravy train ends soon.

  16. PoppaJohn 05/02/2010 at 2:33 PM #

    I’d buy that shirt.

  17. travelwolf 05/02/2010 at 3:06 PM #

All I know is that until Fowler has accepted a job at another institution, he’s “one of the greatest AD’s” in the country… after he accepts the offer, the truth might come out:)

  18. highstick 05/02/2010 at 9:42 PM #

My son is a music Ed major. I’m going to put him to work on a song!!

  19. theghost 05/03/2010 at 9:31 AM #

I’m suspecting that the MSU interview was just a courtesy or something – hard for me to believe that it’s really going to happen. For one, somebody like Joe Deane would make a lot more sense for them, and second, Fowler doesn’t need a job, so I don’t see him moving to Starkville (and I don’t see them letting him “work” out of his house on Lake Gaston like we did)

However, now that it’s out there, I’m hoping somebody makes sure to close the barn door. And change the locks.

  20. triadwolf 05/03/2010 at 9:54 AM #

“Despite progress in fundraising and a major upgrade in facilities under his watch, Fowler has drawn criticism by a vocal portion of the Wolfpack fan base – particularly on the Internet message boards – for the stagnant performance of the football and men’s basketball programs in the second half of his tenure.”

WTF! Can someone come up with a letter-to-the-editor sized summary that can fully demonstrate the 10 yr. disaster that is Lee Fowler? Is there anyone left in the media that knows how to investigate or research?

  21. St8Fan 05/03/2010 at 9:54 AM #

Any new info on the Foul-up front?

  22. LakistaMcCuller 05/03/2010 at 8:35 PM #

I contacted a MSU friend, he said the word is Lee wants the job more than MSU wants him. Sounds about right.
