Four football players charged with possession

Hot off the presses from ABC TV here in Raleigh — Jake Vermiglio, J.R. Sweezy, Markus Kuhn and George Bryan have been charged with possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and maintaining a dwelling for the use of a controlled substance.

NC State football players face drug charges

A search warrant filed by Raleigh police shows marijuana and drug paraphernalia was found in an apartment while four North Carolina State football players were inside.

Senior Offensive Lineman Jake Vermiglio, Redshirt Junior Defensive Tackle J.R. Sweezy, Redshirt Junior Defensive Tackle Markus Kuhn, and Redshirt Junior Tight End George Bryan are all named in the document.

A couple of interesting notes. This is Sweezy’s second encounter with the law in less than two months. Also, the apartment where the drugs were found was College Inn, a complex owned by The Wolfpack Club and directly associated with NC State.

Check back for more on this later. O’Brien will likely put out some sort of statement later in the day and I would expect suspensions (perhaps a dismissal for Sweezy) soon after.

GA- how exactly can one be charged with maintaining and dwelling? This seems small so I guess I just dont understand this law.

The lead in to this song seems kinda relevant. 😉

Looks like NCSU athletics are going to pot.

The thing that jumped out at me was that all of these guys are upperclassmen. Whether or not they agree with the rules, they should’ve known better than to do it, period, especially on campus.

I’m somewhat surprised at the large number of posts on here from those who don’t think smoking pot is a big deal. Maybe it isn’t, but if you’re getting a college education paid for by the Wolfpack Club and NC taxpayers, I think it is a big deal.

The Marine won’t like this, and the other team members and fans who don’t do this kind of thing won’t like it either.

Is any GOOD news ever going to break out concerning Wolfpack athletics?

“I’m somewhat surprised at the large number of posts on here from those who don’t think smoking pot is a big deal.”

Maybe this shows a “changing of the times”. I bet a large percentage of people who dont oppose marijuana are under the age of 30. And also, just because your inteligent enough to see how much financial and individual burdens doesnt mean you use it.

Im not saying let anyone use it, let anyone get it. Regulate it, tax it, turn the dying tobacco road into something profitable.

Last year North Carolinas number 1 cash crop was….. marijuana… and its illegal, imagine how much $$ could be made if farmers could start to actually take advantage. Not to mention the BILLIONS the gov would save in prison costs, DEA/FBI searching 24/7… Seems fairly simple to me…

This is not a hypothetical question. What would you guys find more troublesome, and more susceptible to team punishment?

Arrest for holding 6 grams of weed, paraphanalia and maintaining…or having your ass dragged off the practice field by the SBI and Virginia State Troopers for distribution, stemming from a pound in the trunk of your car?

Remember your answers after we find out what Obie does.

“I Don’t Know What Happens to Young Sweezy…This May Be His Last Straw Which Is Unfortunate…”

Don’t see how this is Sweezy’s “last straw” when considering Singer is still on the team (or is he? What is his status anyway?) after THREE, out in the public, offenses, including driving and possession of a gun.

At least these knuckleheads were keeping it at home, in their own private apartment.

By keeping Singer, TOB is left with few severe options w/o appearing hypocritical.

As far as Sweezy’s first offense, it was discussed here in detail… Yes, he apparently was being a drunk ass, but the confrontation came to him, after he left to bus.

Singer’s indiscretions are more serious in my opinion, and Singer is still on the roster.

I’d, at the very least, suspend all of them… only the length of time/amount of games would be in question.

Depending on the specific facts, minimum 2 games, maximum the entire season with having to ‘prove themselves’ before rejoining the team.

But I am, admittedly, a hardass.

OK, so we beat unx every year with STONED PLAYERS!

TOB must be better than you guys give him credit for.

I believe in legalization, and I”m slightly over 30.

That said, at least we can win the ACC Fulmer Cup this year. Our first trophy since 1980.

    Wait a minute here…

With our proven predisposition to injury, can’t we get some kind of medical marijuana exemption? Yeah, that’s it. The kids were only practicing preventive medicine. Perfect… work in the medical marijuana angle with the new ‘preventive medicine’ angle of Obamacare!

The kids were only trying to relax their bodies to help them avoid future injuries and thus, save NC State, the State of NC, and the tax payers buku dollars!

Yes, that is it. And don’t tell me spring ball is already over. If TA can get hurt getting out of a car, bathtub, or whatever, these kids still need to engage in preventive injury practices in their every day activities.

PS: All charges against Kuhn should be dropped immediately. He’s an immigrant and expecting him to follow the law of the land is a violation of his civil rights!… Oh wait, he’s here legally… lock him up and throw the book at him!

Maybe I should have been a defense attorney, or better yet, a politician.

“I’m somewhat surprised at the large number of posts on here from those who don’t think smoking pot is a big deal.”

I’m not. They should have known to do it off campus like most people that I know learned after their first year. But that being said, it’s not like they were doing anything to endanger anyone including themselves. They were in their room not driving around. And I am over 30 and feel strongly about this.

“With our proven predisposition to injury, can’t we get some kind of medical marijuana exemption?”

Maybe USC or some other Californian team could play that card, but unfortunately NC is still behind the times when it comes to decriminalizing pot.

  12. tjfoose2 04/26/2010 at 5:08 PM #

Ding ding ding!!! Who had the ’10 minutes and under’ in the how long before before ncsufan13 chimed in to my politically tinted joke? You win the pool.

Just ribbing you ‘fan… just having fun.

But anyway, I thought about that, the CA vs NC law point, and already had a rebuttal ready…

So what, the way laws are applied and respected these days, the argument could still be made. If our law makers and judges can use foreign law as precedent to override our own laws and constitution, then we certainly can use the laws of other states in our argument.

Besides, we can’t just trust some dumb cop to fairly and justly apply the law as it is written. Obama and Sharpton have been telling me that all weekend.

The cop obviously had an agenda and was using the youth/hippie biased drug law to discriminate against our white young ball players who are just trying to earn and education and make it in society.

[Edit] Due to past experience on this site, I find it prudent that I explicitly state that I am just having fun and joking around here by satirically tying in current national events to our football players little ‘mishap’ with the law. I am not trying to start, or otherwise engage in, a serious political debate.

  13. Wulfpack 04/26/2010 at 5:14 PM #

This is tough. I think TOB is going to come down hard on them. You just can’t have this mess going on from four leaders. If you go light on them, what does it say to the rest of the team?

I totally get that this type of thing happens on college campuses. It still doesn’t make it smart. Frankly, I’m a little shocked at how stupid they were. But they’re kids, I get that. And things happen. But there still have to be consequences for taking part in illegal behavior.

And just coming at it from a coaching/health perspective, you don’t want your players blowing that junk into their lungs. Sounds as if they had plenty of gear, and that’s not good.

  14. wolfpackfan09 04/26/2010 at 5:25 PM #

    @wulfpack
If they had a water pipe or something that is good, it filters out about 80% of toxins from smoking. I just wish cops had something better to do then bust smoking a little dope

  15. ncsufan13 04/26/2010 at 5:31 PM #

^ I was just joking Tjfoose, but I think your idea could actually work for some players in California. I could see Pete Carroll letting some medical marijuana slide for an injured player… Tom O’Brien, not so much.

  16. tjfoose2 04/26/2010 at 5:36 PM #

I figured you were… just wanted to be clear though as sometimes we have had a few misunderstandings.

I think USC should look into that too – have a defense argument canned and ready to go… half joking, but half serious. Most injuries occur when the body and muscles contract… ‘relaxed’ is the way to go.

  17. ncsufan13 04/26/2010 at 5:38 PM #

I think the first team that could get a medical marijuana clinic set up on campus would have a major recruiting advantage. =P

  18. coach13 04/26/2010 at 5:50 PM #

If and when the dust settles, public flogging should be envoked as a strong detourant. I want blood and tears from these idiots so that they cringe at the thought of a repete. Anyone else who says “give’m a break” or “not serious” is…well…probably not intelligent enough to make an argument with anyway.

  19. RabidWolf 04/26/2010 at 5:56 PM #

I can remember the early days of my wasted (pun intended) youth. I got busted, and when I wen to court the charge was read and the jude acually chuckled about it on the bench and muttered “another waste of my time”. I was given 1 year unsupervised probation and “drug education school”. When the DES was done, my record was purged of the charge. If I remember correctly, that program still exists. IF these guys are lucky enough to get a pretty liberal judge (NO pun intended), they might get off with school. As far as TOB goes…it’s just wait and see.

  20. wolfpackfan09 04/26/2010 at 6:31 PM #

    @coach13
Just because we have different views than you doesn’t mean we are not intelligent.

  21. The Captain 04/26/2010 at 7:17 PM #

The precedent was set when Charles Amato was head coach in 2003. He suspended Hudson and Dawson for embarrassing his university when they stole a vending card. With those two guys on defense, we defeat FSU and Maryland in 2003 and win the ACC.

Also, Coach Fatso in Chapel Hill suspended Puff (how’d he ever get that nickname), Sparkman and Bowman, who were all star players, for the same instance.

TOB has no choice but to suspend. If he doesn’t, I’ll question whether we are champions in the community.

  22. Prowling Woofie 04/26/2010 at 8:20 PM #

Captain, Singer’s still on the team, isn’t he ?

That rep’s already been tarnished… TOB is hanging on to a bonehead to keep his 5-star half brother.

  23. GoldenChain 04/26/2010 at 8:32 PM #

“Just because we have different views than you doesn’t mean we are not intelligent.”

Well I’ll tell you who isn’t intelligent, the 4 football players who ‘fired some up’ while a security officer (who was an off duty policeman) was roaming the walkways.
I figure that wasn’t the 1st time the CInn had a security man around. These muscle brains should have done it somewhere else if they felt compelled.

You’re getting an $80k education for free, looks like that’s incentive enough to lay off the blunts (while your on campus anyway).

OH…oh watch over TheCOWDOG, he’s quoting himself now. I blew the setup. No one responded.

On an early August day we watched in shock as one of our teammies (and a friend) was lead off the field by the authorities mentioned above.
We had no idea why at the time and ya could’ve imagined how freakin’ unsettling that was. When we found out why later in the day, it was worse. What the hell would become of B, what would Holtz do?

As it played out over the next 3 days, with B absent, nothing.
Nothing to address, nothing in the papers, nothing until day four when B showed up at practice and was sent thru holy hell that lasted until opening day. When he hit the field at Carter starting that night, we loved it.

Chops has it right when he says the team knows what the outcomes should be.

Shame on the four of them for being stupid in regards to cleaning up before the Cops could serve.

Shame on anyone believing that a 21 yr. old is a role model. Could you explain to your kid why 1/3 of their heroes are puking up the pre game meal in the clubhouse? Ain’t butterflies.

Shame on anyone believing that legalization of pot should have a backseat to booze and tobacco, proclivities of my own.

Shame on TOB if he makes a bigger thing out of this than need be. Let the team decide.

Shame on anyone that publishes another Kennel blurb.

And last but not least, shame on Cowdog for being…well, a bad dog that has lost the ability to write and convey from the player angle. No bisquits.

Poor judgment on their part… doesn’t send a good message about the university and I’m not condoning it, but it’s on the lower end of severity of offenses that I can imagine. In fact, there probably aren’t too many offenses that would be less severe in my book. Maybe minor traffic violations? I’m not that worried about it.
