And the rich get richer…Singler will be back for Blue Devils

Fresh off the 2010 National Championship, Duke got more good news Monday when forward Kyle Singler announced his decision to return to the Blue Devils for his senior season in 2010-2011. While some had speculated Singler would forgo his final season to head for the NBA, I always saw Singler as the Shane Battier type. Dedicated to the Duke program, Coach K and his education.

While Singler’s decision to stay clearly makes Duke better, it’s unclear right now how the Blue Devils will play next season. With Brian Zoubek and Lance Thomas gone, the Blue Devils will likely play a smaller lineup. This could push Singler to the four spot more often and force him to guard bigger people on the defensive end. That being said, those bigger people are going to have their hands full trying to guard Singler on the perimeter.

Here’s a story on Singler’s return.

Singler to return to national champs

Kyle Singler, voted the Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four, announced Monday that he will return to national champion Duke for his senior season.

Singler scored 19 points as Duke beat Butler 61-59 to win its fourth national championship and finish 35-5. He averaged 17.7 points, seven rebounds and 2.4 assists in his junior season, and had 17 games with 20 or more points while posting seven double-doubles.

“I love being here at Duke and am excited about next year,” Singler said in a statement released by the university. “I had two great options in front of me, but I did not want to miss out on all of the great things to come in a senior season.”

Good news for the ACC and obviously Duke University….. I am impressed that he chose to stay.

I don’t think Singler’s role will change much. I would imagine the Plumlee twins will combine to man the fort down low. Don’t forget Duke also gets Seth Curry in the lineup this year, so the rich do indeed get richer. The Duke staff has said he was the best three point shooter in practice this year.

Seth Curry, Kyrie Irving and Singler back. Devils should be preseason #1. John and Zoo are tough losses…but, they gain as much as they lose and the bench is strong. They will be a bit weaker in the middle without Zoo and Lance(and I agree that Singler gets more time at 4 this year, but a Duke 4 is a 3 really)…they could easily flip to 3 guard as Coach K often likes to do. dawkins/Curry/Irving/Nolan(maybe Tyler Thorton too) will have to play.

Good for Duke. I would love to see a strong ACC next year so we have to quit hearing about how down the ACC is.

If the ACC wins the national championship in a down year, what does that tell you? Besides the Big Bad Big East didn’t exactly seem so powerful in the tourny.

I think one thing Duke benefitted from the ACC this year was tough games from each opponent. There were no cupcakes to take a night off. We may have only had 1-2 very good teams, but the whole league had the ability to win any night.

I hope we can take advantage of several schools adjusting to new coaches/systems and make our mark next year. We may not challenge for first, but it is a great opportunity to get back in the top third of the conference.

If I Am An ACC Coach…I Am Having Nightmares ABbut How To Defend This Team Next Year…Singler Alone Makes the Team So Much More Versitile…

Now They Have Significant Depth At All Positions w/ This Class Coming In…They Have a Near Perfect Balance of Talent, Athleticism, Range, and Experience…They Can Play Small w/ Singler At The 4 or Big w/ Him at the 3…They Have One of the Greatest College Basketball Coaches of All Time…Their Scoring Options Have Increased (from 3 to 4 or 5) and They Always Play Good Defense…THIS is the Scariest Team I’ve Seen In A While…

Amazing to me that UNC and especially Duke have such a strong track record keeping their guys around 3-4 years, especially given the talent level. Maggette, Deng, and Marvin Williams are the only 1 and done guys that I really remember over the past 10 years.

It still pains me thinking about the hole Josh Powell left on the team.
