Wolfpack Women Advance To ACC Finals

BREAKING UPDATE: NC State’s Lady Wolfpack defeated Boston College 63-57 to advance to the conference tournament finals against Duke.

Trailing 29-23 at half, the Wolfpack  put together a 15-0 second half run to rally back into the game, and then relied on hard-nosed defense and the deadeye shooting of  Nikitta Gartrell in order to close out the Eagles.  Gartrell made several key shots down the stretch, and is easily State’s player of the game.

Tip-off against tourney top-seed Duke is at 1pm on Sunday.

Wolfpack women under first-year coach Kellie Harper. That success continued tonight when the Pack upset No. 3 seed Virginia 66-59.

Here’s a look at tonight’s game from Tim Peeler.

Pack upsets 3rd-seeded Cavs, advance to ACC semis

NC State’s defense rattled Virginia ACC Player of the Year candidate Monica Wright during the first half and the first 10 minutes of the second half, then survived Wright’s scoring onslaught over the final 10 minutes of the game to upset the third-seeded Cavaliers, 66-59, Friday night at the ACC Women’s Championship.

But Wright, who averages 23 points a game and is the all-time leading scorer in the history of Virginia women’s basketball, tried her best to get her team back into t he game. After missing six straight shots to open the second half, she scored 15 consecutive points for her team.

Meanwhile, the Wolfpack went cold from field and Wright’s scoring closed a double-figure deficit to just three points.

State’s defense finally slowed Wright down enough to get the offense going again, and senior Nikitta Gartrell drained a 3-pointer with 1:45 remaining to push the Pack’s lead back to 59-53. From there, freshman Marissa Kastanek and junior Brittany Strachan made free throws that sealed the Wolfpack’s sixth win in its last seven games.

The Pack (19-12) advances to play Boston College Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. in the second ACC semifinal contest. State beat the Eagles on Feb. 19, 73-62, in Reynolds Coliseum, but lost in Boston 83-66 on Jan. 10.

Sid must have been talking about the women’s team.

    Sweet! Way to go ladies!

6 vs. 7 for the right to go to the championship game.

It looks like this win will probably help the Lady Pack get into the NCAAT. Of course winning the ACCT would be pretty sweet and remove all doubt.

    Go Pack!

I watched the game, Nikitta Gartrell has got ice in her veins. The Pack women got a rebound with 1:55 to go only ahead by 3. I figured great, work some clock but Gartrell dribbles quickly down court ahead of her teammates and shoots a highly contested 3 pt shot. Everyone is like “No, no, no..(swish)…Yes…Yes YES ! It was the game changer.

    Go Pack !

If we can beat BC we get the winner of GT/Duke. We can beat both of those teams! An ACC CChampionship sure would be nice, but it’s just nice to know we’ve played our way into a sure tournament spot. Way to go, coach!

From what I’ve seen, they are not a good shooting team (good from three, FT’s and layups, but not much mid range game), but they are very good rebounders and play tough defense. And Harper definitely knows how to motivate. Tough, tough game today, playing someone we’ve already beaten this year, and our third game in a row. Sure would love to make it to the title game!

Can Harper coach the men’s team?

  7. 66pack 03/06/2010 at 10:11 AM #

she is a good coach who will be moving up to a sec,big east or big 12 position soon so jed should start looking for a replacement.

if the womens team played the men and no shots could be taken within 10 feet of the basket ,the women win most of the games.

But, she hasn’t even had a chance to get in her “own players”, why are we winning???

In all seriousness – congrats! Way to go, good luck today!

In a shocking turn of events, posters used this completely unrelated thread to bash Sid. Give it a rest people.

^I think they are just sayin’…
He will get his shot next week. Maybe he can get a run out of his guys. Back to the matter at hand. Go Wolfpack Women. They are not making excuses, they are just playing and playing well. Would really like to see them tangle with the Dukies or Jackets in the Finals. TCB today and see what happens on Sunday.

Going to the finals!!! Opponent: Duke. Bring it on, Devils!

Congratulations, way to go Pack!. I like the way they have it together at the end of the season. Moving up in seating for the NCAA’s and a chance to bring a ACC Championship to Raleigh.

Not bad for a fisrt year coach. Good job Coach Harper

    Nice!

I think they can beat Duke. Tough to get 4 in 4, but these women have something cooking.

Red hot down the stretch. Might have already played their way up to an 8 or 9 seed, maybe even better if they can beat Duke. Unreal finish to the season no matter what happens from here on out.

Edit: Completely unrelated, but I like the 360 scoreboard for the banner ads. Pretty cool.

    Dayum, fellas.

The ladies put together one hell of a late-game surge to win this one. The first 30+ minutes felt like a loss, as we had no answer for BC’s big woman Swords… Gartrel was just keeping us in the game with one huge shot after another, but BC’s ability to pound it inside appeared to be too much for us to handle.

Then we saw that whole “coaching” thing happen.

Kellie Harper simultaneously called for a 3/4-court press that generated a few turnovers, and she inserted a seldom-used Latvian (never heard of her) who happens to be the tallest player we’ve got. The combination meant that (1) there were fewer opportunities to throw an entry pass, and (2) they couldn’t just throw over the top for a layup every time. Cue 5 quick points for the Pack… with momentum turned, Harper goes back to the regular lineup, and we had the energy we needed to run away with this one over the last few minutes. If you take away the four 3-pointers by the BC chick who shoots 28%, this would’ve been a 10-point win.

Gutty, gutty performance by the players (Gartrel came up huge all day, despite having leg problems) and stunningly good coaching down the stretch by Kellie. I’ll be shocked if we can keep it close tomorrow (those girls are just damn tired), but this has been a rather pleasant run.

Interesting that Sendek, Lowe & Harper have all gone to the finals of the ACC Tourney in their first year.

  17. WV Wolf 03/06/2010 at 6:04 PM #

I feel bad now that I haven’t paid that much attention to an over-achieving, well coached team with a lot of heart. Which are traits I wish I saw a little more of in the State teams I did pay attention to…

Congrats to the ladies, hopefully they’ve got enough gas left in the tank for one more day. It’s always nice to see a team playing their best basketball in March.

  18. blpack 03/06/2010 at 6:41 PM #

Gritty, tough and full of heart bunch. They never gave up. Congrats to the Wolfpack Women on reaching the Finals. Don’t stop there.

    Awesome! Go Pack!

“Interesting that Sendek, Lowe & Harper have all gone to the finals of the ACC Tourney in their first year.”

Wow. That never occured to me. Thanks for bringing that to my attention. I hope we can finally get over the hump and win a championship tomorrow.

And Harper clearly knows what in the hell she is doing. She’s going to be around for a long time. Hopefully, we can hang on to her.

  21. tuckerdorm1983 03/06/2010 at 6:52 PM #

maybe she would like to coach the men’s team

  22. TOBtime 03/06/2010 at 7:23 PM #

Way to ladies! One gutty performance (and fantastic coaching job) after another. These girls are tired but never say never.

Hopefully help is on the way to show some serious appreciation for Coach Harper. The most appreciated help would be, well, we all know which office we want re-occupied soon.

  23. Wulfpack 03/06/2010 at 7:43 PM #

Coach Harper just exudes confidence and I just love the way she interacts with her players. You can tell they want to play hard for her. And she’s so decisive with her in-game decision making.

Tomorrow may be rough, but I kind of have that feeling with this team. We’re going to battle to the bitter end.

  24. tuckerdorm1983 03/06/2010 at 8:43 PM #

i would like to see her in the swimsuit edition of sports illustrated

  25. Alpha Wolf 03/06/2010 at 9:12 PM #

I’m just glad that she is on our sideline. This weekend’s success is not a tournament run from the graveyard, it is the result of team building and hard work throughout the season.

This is the lady that will build the program to its potential, and she represents a roadmap of how one can succeed at NC State…you know, that place in the shadow of those schools we’re not supposed to dare compete with.

My only worry about Coach Harper is keeping her for the long haul.
