Sunday College Basketball Stuff

Thought we would open this entry for folks to interact if you weren’t interesting in some of the topics being discussed on our message boards.

Yesterday was a tough for one for WolfpackNation. If you were looking to cut through the clutter of the 300+ comments in our game entry, then I think you will like and appreciate the quality and insight in this discussion. Additionally, resident ACC expert, BJD, just linked some great comments and thoughts regarding this years ACC Tournament that you must check out by clicking here.

(1) State’s half-court defense against Clemson and Florida State was as good as I’ve seen us play in many, many years. Even against Georgia Tech, it was pretty good (although the Bees shot themselves in the foot on offense frequently, as did the Pack). This is both good and bad. It’s good because solid defensive work is the foundation for sustainable success. Good defensive teams don’t go, say, 2-10 during any stretch of conference play anywhere. And I firmly believe that pretty much any D-1 player can be at least an adequate defender with effort, coaching, and proper positioning (which is in reality a combo of effort and coaching). So, that does give me some semblance of hope. But here’s the flip side – why the hell did it take so long to start playing this kind of defense? And can we reasonably expect a strong, consistent defensive effort next year, or will 2010-11 be similarly frustrating?

Ultimately, Georgia Tech will battle Duke today for the 57th annual ACC Championship. Amazingly, in the 57 years of the ACC Tournament, there has only been a single occurrence where one of the “Big Four” teams from North Carolina were not represented in the Championship game. Another one from BJD:

(4) It’s counter-intuitive to say this about a team playing for the ACC title today, but I really don’t feel good about my program if I’m a GT fan. They have raw talent galore. But this is, frankly, as stupid a team as I’ve watched play in a long, long time. And the semifinal game against NC State has to be among the most poorly played tournament semifinals of all time (it reminded me of the Wake/State NIT semifinal during the Sendek era). But fortunately for the Jackets, somebody had to win Saturday’s game. But I sure as hell don’t expect much out of them come NCAAT time. And I don’t expect anything to change as long as Paul Hewitt remains at the helm.

If you typically watch ACC Basketball then you know the unfortunate reality of the significance that the officiating team carries in any game. Here is a neat look at some officiating information relative to the ACC Championship game:

2009: Jamie Luckie, Bryan Kersey, Sean Hull
2008: Jamie Luckie, Les Jones, Mike Eades
2007: Karl Hess, Bryan Kersey, Gary Maxwell
2006: Karl Hess, Bryan Kersey, Jamie Luckie
2005: Duke Edsall, Larry Rose, Les Jones
2004: Karl Hess, Reggie Cofer, Jamie Luckie
2003: Mike Wood, Larry Rose, Karl Hess
2002: Mike Wood, Duke Edsall, Larry Rose
2001: Mike Wood, Larry Rose, Karl Hess
2000: Mike Wood, Larry Rose, Karl Hess

(In cumulative list form for the last 10 years, it’s Hess 6, Rose 5, Luckie 4, Wood 4, Kersey 3, Edsall 2, Jones 2, with four others at one apiece).

Even though NC State fans don’t get to watch today’s college basketball developments through the lense of a potential NCAA Tournament berth, we are anxious about how all of the chips will fall as it will relate to our potential NIT hopes. Luke DeCock and the N&O echo our sentiments that NC State deserves an NIT bid.

Nevertheless, it was easy to see, despite the bad decisions and worse discipline that led to a 57-54 loss for Georgia Tech on Saturday, that the Wolfpack deserves to play on despite the loss. It’s an open question whether N.C. State has done enough to earn an NIT bid at 19-15, but the answer should be yes.

Basketball junkies of rooting interests will like the “Bubble-centric” articles that we’ve linked and resulting conversation in this thread.

Lastly, I have to link this conversation in the event that anyone has some information to add.

haha poppa after the game last night my friends and i were talking and i said the same thing bring on herb and princeton highcourt, the good thing is they will be just as inept if not more say than us taking a last second shot

My Sunday Basketball thoughts are Go Buckeyes, since my oldest son has decided to attend there next Fall.

  5. Wulfpack 03/14/2010 at 4:25 PM #

Great place, Texpack. Get up to Columbus as much as you can. Now that is a school that cares about winning. On top of that, it is an amazing academic institution. Congrats to you and your son, Tex.

Duke is the overall 3rd #1 seed. I don’t believe it.

This isn’t hating on Duke, but in no way do they deserve that. I wouldn’t have been surprised if Duke was on the 2 line behind WVa, but to jump Syracuse on the 1 line is just incredible.

Apparently both refs and selection committees love Duke.

In most years this team is on the 3 line. I’m stunned.

  7. wolfonthehill 03/14/2010 at 5:36 PM #

    Wow – VT’s out. Despite their RPI, I didn’t expect that…

  8. ibackthepack1160 03/14/2010 at 5:46 PM #

that was the biggest surprise in my mind that va tech got left out historically if you go 500 in the acc you should go not to mention they won a game in the acct. im not sure where this is going to leave us as far as the nit im on pins and needles

Seth Greenberg just used ‘how hard it is to win at NC State’ who ‘Marquette could not beat at home’ as an example of how tough the ACC is.

    Good for him

^”Apparently both refs and selection committees love Duke.”

A potential sweet 16 match-up against Texas A&M in Houston and regional final potentially against Baylor isn’t what I’d call home cooking. There will be 45,000 Aggies in the house if A&M makes it through.

As for OSU and my oldest son, thanks Wulfpack. We were very impressed with our visit there this summer and are headed back for another visit in a few weeks.

The NIT would be smart to match up Lowe v. Sendek in the RBC. That is if they want to move some tickets.

  12. wufpup76 03/14/2010 at 6:02 PM #

^No doubt Texpack. But, strictly on seeding I was very surprised re: Duke.

Looks like Chandler Parsons’ 70-footer put Florida into the NCAA tourney; apparently, they were one of the last teams in who probably wouldn’t have gotten there with one less win or one more loss.

Mississippi State should’ve gone in ahead of the Gators as well as Minnesota. They beat Florida in the SEC tourney, went 23-11, and lost in the SEC title game by one point in OT to #2 Kentucky.

The Pack beat 3 teams in the East Regional field, including Wake. What did Wake do to deserve getting in anyway? The committee says that late-season games are no more important than early season games (so that small schools’ wins over big schools are counted equally), but then Syracuse’s “weak” finish lowered their seed. Huh?

From Seth Greenberg’s perspective, I imagine that whether or not Duke should’ve been the 3rd #1 seed is small potatoes. In the ACC, VPI finished ahead of 3 teams who made the Big Dance while the Hokies didn’t.

I don’t know whether or not the field should be expanded to 96 teams, but I do know that some sort of expansion is needed when Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Winthrop get a chance to make the field by playing each other, while Mississippi State was booted out because they lost to Kentucky despite winning 23 games.

Dammit – I’d forgotten about VT’s exclusion & its potential impact on our NIT chances.

  15. Ed89 03/14/2010 at 6:14 PM #

Anyone know when the NIT brackets will be released?

  16. Werewolf of Yadkinville 03/14/2010 at 6:14 PM #

for those wondering it says the NIT will be announced tomorrow on the website

  17. wufpup76 03/14/2010 at 6:17 PM #

^There’s an NIT selection show on ESPNU tonight at 9pm.

  18. JeremyH 03/14/2010 at 6:18 PM #

So if we had at least split with UNC and Virgina (7-9 instead of 5-11) we would have had a chance to get in (like GT)? Well then, we weren’t as far away as we thought.

  19. Avid109 03/14/2010 at 6:22 PM #

If we don’t make the NIT field, is there any chance of us playing in the CBI or the CIT? Don’t teams have to pay to play in those tournaments?

  20. Wulfpack 03/14/2010 at 6:23 PM #

After listening to the analysis and seeing the numbers, I agree with Vitale and Bob Knight that Virginia Tech got robbed. Cal? Utah State? Florida? Wake/GT? Virignia Tech won TEN conference games. TEN. Georgia Tech won 7.

Greenberg did give a great interview and he’s all class. He could have easily lost it there and dented the armor of some bubble team that got in, but he didn’t go there. And he gave us some props along the way.

  21. ibackthepack1160 03/14/2010 at 6:34 PM #

this is going to be to close we went from not being on the nit radar to the bubble to being in solidly to being on the bubble again and now after the ncaat snubbed va tech thank you seth greenberg for that nice shout out, the illini getting left out we might not make it after all. but keep in mind that les robinson is on the selection committee so we shall see

  22. wolfonthehill 03/14/2010 at 6:49 PM #

If we pull out the AZ and Fla games, and win 3 total games against uncch, VaTech, and UVa (instead of getting swept by ALL FREAKING THREE), we’re in. I know that’s a lot of games… but it’s not a stretch.

Yes, we were close. With guard play next year, we’re in.

  23. LKNpackfan 03/14/2010 at 6:56 PM #

Seems to me that the selection committee is finally taking a stance again the super-weak OOC schedules some coaches have been padding their records with. VT’s OCC-RPI is >300, 339! That’s ridiculous.

And losing 4 of their last 6 certainly didn’t help either.

  24. Wulfpack 03/14/2010 at 7:12 PM #

Being swept by Virginia and UNC was the straw that broke the camel’s back. That shouldn’t have happened. Going to be interesting to see whether we get an NIT bid or nor. I think we’re right on the bubble. VT not getting in today could come back to bite us.

  25. MatSci94 03/14/2010 at 7:30 PM #

Might this be the thing that pushes Greenberg to consider another job?
