NC State 58, South Florida 57

Cardiac Pack indeed. No. 6 seed NC State used solid defense and a late-game pass and layup from Scott Wood to Richard Howell to defeat No. 3 seed South Florida in Orlando. The “upset” win sets up a second round trip to No. 2 seed UAB, a team many believed to be on the NCAA Tournament bubble heading into the final weeks of the season. If NC State can secure another victory and UNC upsets Mississippi State in the second round, the Wolfpack and Tar Heels would meet for the third time this season.

GoPack: Howell’s layup pushes hoops past USF, 58-57

Dennis Horner scored 25 points and Richard Howell’s go-ahead layup with eight seconds left barely beat the shot clock as NC State defeated South Florida 58-57 in the first round of the NIT on Tuesday night.

The officials reviewed Howell’s basket to see if it beat the shot clock and the call stood.

USF star Dominiques Jones had a look for a last shot, but passed it to Chris Howard, who then passed it to Augustus Gilchrist, who put up an airball.

The Wolfpack (20-15) trailed for the first 25 minutes of the game as Horner had 14 of NC State’s 22 points in the first.

N&O: Howell’s timely shot lifts Pack to NIT win

Scott Wood couldn’t believe his eyes.

The freshman had been held without a point, and with 11 seconds left in the game, six on the shot clock and N.C. State trailing South Florida 57-56, the inbounds pass had sailed over his head into the backcourt.

As Wood tracked down the ball and moved upcourt, he started to heave a halfcourt shot when he noticed something.

“I was going up to shoot it, and I looked at the clock real quick, and I was like, ‘The clock hasn’t started yet,’ ” said Wood, who fired a pass under the basket to Richard Howell, wide open for a go-ahead layup.

I don’t know if anyone else caught it or not, but Luke Cothron decommitted. I think it’s because C.J. is coming……..

I think it was … or at least the “Wolf!” then “Pack!” chant. Our fans are amazing.

You’re right, our fans are amazing. I was in Greensboro Thursday night and could have sworn there was more red than argile baby blue plaid.

Our collective rebounding this game has been pretty good. Another jersey tug with no call.

Does Howell have 2 or 3 fouls….announcers said 2 and graphic said 3?

  11. wufpup76 03/16/2010 at 8:19 PM #

Dominique Jones got away with one Mr. Announcer? You don’t say.

  12. BassPacker 03/16/2010 at 8:19 PM #

Thomas does not need to be on the floor !

You are right…the Slap Chop does have the basketball reference with the no look shot by Vince Shlomi of the competing product.

Commentators just mentioned another uncalled jersey grab for USF.

  15. gashousepack 03/16/2010 at 8:19 PM #

Good gravy, foul calls are ridiculous.

“Dominque Jones got away with one” He’s kidding right? ONE?? How about one or more every trip down the floor.

Mays does not need to be on the floor ! I just don’t understand Sid rotation tonite. Thomas has not played hardly all season and he’s in more than Wood, Degand……

  19. lush 03/16/2010 at 8:20 PM #

Usf has shot 20 free throws

Ncsu has shot 4 free throws

  20. wufpup76 03/16/2010 at 8:21 PM #

No shot clock violation on us and they get a run out. Same thing happened in the first half and CJ Williams was alone uncontested and they stopped the play and called a shot clock violation.

    Consistency please.

  21. lush 03/16/2010 at 8:21 PM #

Now they have 24 to our 4

  22. elvislives 03/16/2010 at 8:21 PM #

I’m trying not to be as negative as I normally am watching the Wolfpack play, so I’ll just say that Julius Mays has a lot to improve on over the summer.

  23. PackerInRussia 03/16/2010 at 8:21 PM #

Why did play not stop for the shot clock violation like it did earlier when State would have had a breakaway/easy 2?

  24. BassPacker 03/16/2010 at 8:23 PM #

    Wow, alot of WITH !

  25. Lunatic Fringe 03/16/2010 at 8:23 PM #

I don’t understand the no shot clock call on that play.

BTW – Nice job NCSU fans in attendance.
