NC State 58, South Florida 57

Cardiac Pack indeed. No. 6 seed NC State used solid defense and a late-game pass and layup from Scott Wood to Richard Howell to defeat No. 3 seed South Florida in Orlando. The “upset” win sets up a second round trip to No. 2 seed UAB, a team many believed to be on the NCAA Tournament bubble heading into the final weeks of the season. If NC State can secure another victory and UNC upsets Mississippi State in the second round, the Wolfpack and Tar Heels would meet for the third time this season.

GoPack: Howell’s layup pushes hoops past USF, 58-57

Dennis Horner scored 25 points and Richard Howell’s go-ahead layup with eight seconds left barely beat the shot clock as NC State defeated South Florida 58-57 in the first round of the NIT on Tuesday night.

The officials reviewed Howell’s basket to see if it beat the shot clock and the call stood.

USF star Dominiques Jones had a look for a last shot, but passed it to Chris Howard, who then passed it to Augustus Gilchrist, who put up an airball.

The Wolfpack (20-15) trailed for the first 25 minutes of the game as Horner had 14 of NC State’s 22 points in the first.

N&O: Howell’s timely shot lifts Pack to NIT win

Scott Wood couldn’t believe his eyes.

The freshman had been held without a point, and with 11 seconds left in the game, six on the shot clock and N.C. State trailing South Florida 57-56, the inbounds pass had sailed over his head into the backcourt.

As Wood tracked down the ball and moved upcourt, he started to heave a halfcourt shot when he noticed something.

“I was going up to shoot it, and I looked at the clock real quick, and I was like, ‘The clock hasn’t started yet,’ ” said Wood, who fired a pass under the basket to Richard Howell, wide open for a go-ahead layup.

We need Smith to come on. Get him the ball.

I thought we might have an advantage without our acc crew….

    Whoops

Personally, I am happy seeing Johnny Thomas get some quality minutes. It’s like seeing Tony Baker play basketball…..well not really. Good job JT

May’s consistently picks up his dribble at the worst time and has no left hand. Horner continues to prove me wrong. Good play the last 3 weeks.

those south florida fans sure do make some noise.

5 minutes of no fouls and then a foul. I guess the refs needed the TV timeout.

Much better energy and intensity this half. Let’s see if we can get some of the calls to go our way now.

32-32 at the under 16 timeout. Pack looks pretty decent all of a sudden.

    Damn, Farnold pulled back.

^^ Exactly…I thought his engine was stuck in 5th gear. Who knew he had a reverse. 🙂

Lunatic Fringe that makes sense. Wood is going to have to learn next year to stay out of foul trouble but he is only a freshman so it will come. I really see that our point production falls off when he is not in the game, and I think that has to do with our guys not going to basket with any conviction. Lets hit the boards hard here in the second half after missed shots.

The constant travels and beatdowns by usf are blatantly obvious. Why does the rulebook get thrown out the window every time we play?

  15. BassPacker 03/16/2010 at 8:04 PM #

I think Wood set a record for getting first foul in the first minute of every game this season.

Wood tries to use his hands instead of feet to defend.

Seton Hall player pulls a Chris Paul on a Texas Tech guy, elbow to the nutz, gets ejected. He got away with a punch on the play earlier.

I think you have to draw blood to get a foul in this game. It is so odd after watching the ACC refs for 4 days.

  18. lush 03/16/2010 at 8:08 PM #

Am I taking crazy pills? They just grabbed farnolds jersey during a fast break and no call. Touch fouls on us every possession

  19. jay95 03/16/2010 at 8:09 PM #

These refs are channeling their inner Karl Hess!!

  20. fullmoon1 03/16/2010 at 8:09 PM #

I am impressed with the contribution from everyone. As soon as I turned it on I see javi hit a 3. Thats a good sign. I don’t care if it is pretty I just want a “w”.

  21. foz 03/16/2010 at 8:09 PM #

THAT was a ni ce offensive set.

  22. wufpup76 03/16/2010 at 8:09 PM #

EVERYTHING is better about this half. Movement, D, energy, everything.

    41-34 Pack … timeout USF.

  23. BassPacker 03/16/2010 at 8:09 PM #

Was that a “Lets Go Wolfpack” chant?

  24. Lunatic Fringe 03/16/2010 at 8:09 PM #

lush – You are not crazy, but refs are consistent on both sides. BTW – Tracy is just getting better and better at dishing with his back to basket.

I’m watching the game on ESPN U here in Austin, TX. The following products have been advertised thus far:

    Man Girdle wife-beater undershirts
1950 Die Cast Chevy Pickup Truck Model
    Dog breath spray (seriously)
    Pedi Care foot cream stuff
    Emery Cat

    NIT advertising dollars are strugglin…..

Meanwhile, the Pack is on FIRE! Up 41-34 with 12 minutes to go!
