NC State 58, South Florida 57

Cardiac Pack indeed. No. 6 seed NC State used solid defense and a late-game pass and layup from Scott Wood to Richard Howell to defeat No. 3 seed South Florida in Orlando. The “upset” win sets up a second round trip to No. 2 seed UAB, a team many believed to be on the NCAA Tournament bubble heading into the final weeks of the season. If NC State can secure another victory and UNC upsets Mississippi State in the second round, the Wolfpack and Tar Heels would meet for the third time this season.

GoPack: Howell’s layup pushes hoops past USF, 58-57

Dennis Horner scored 25 points and Richard Howell’s go-ahead layup with eight seconds left barely beat the shot clock as NC State defeated South Florida 58-57 in the first round of the NIT on Tuesday night.

The officials reviewed Howell’s basket to see if it beat the shot clock and the call stood.

USF star Dominiques Jones had a look for a last shot, but passed it to Chris Howard, who then passed it to Augustus Gilchrist, who put up an airball.

The Wolfpack (20-15) trailed for the first 25 minutes of the game as Horner had 14 of NC State’s 22 points in the first.

N&O: Howell’s timely shot lifts Pack to NIT win

Scott Wood couldn’t believe his eyes.

The freshman had been held without a point, and with 11 seconds left in the game, six on the shot clock and N.C. State trailing South Florida 57-56, the inbounds pass had sailed over his head into the backcourt.

As Wood tracked down the ball and moved upcourt, he started to heave a halfcourt shot when he noticed something.

“I was going up to shoot it, and I looked at the clock real quick, and I was like, ‘The clock hasn’t started yet,’ ” said Wood, who fired a pass under the basket to Richard Howell, wide open for a go-ahead layup.

Thomas afraid to even get close to Jones on D now, and Jones promptly splashes a 3.

Can’t blame the refs, we haven’t responded to their play and they are dictating the style of play.

kl;dwjaf ;kldsajkl this is complete crap the refs are full of themselves. i can’t believe their calling these little touch fouls.

I guess Horner needs to get fed so that we can get the foul disparity back to respectable.

Announcer: Tracy Smith has to work harder to catch the ball down low. Newsflash, a–hole … if they don’t throw him the ball, HE CAN’T CATCH IT!!

If you’re not watching the game on tv, I’ll just say that the Pack didn’t convert on their last possession of the half.

Once again our guards are failing to play like they would against an RPI top 50 team. I really don’t get that, but hope they turn it around in the second half. Game’s there for the taking.

Looked like our guy got ran over there … oh well, whatever.

We are extremely fortunate to be down only 4 at the half. 26-22 USF at the half.

14-3 free throw disparity, among other things, and we’re only down 4.

Defensive effort has been pretty solid so far. Not sure how we’re gonna keep Jones off the line though.

The way this game is being called shows what is wrong with college basketball. Defense = pushing. You have to be an offensive lineman to play inside.

UConn up on N’eastern 59-57 w/ under a minute to play.

Calhoun is practically at center court during the play…

I don’t understand why Wood did not play that much in 1st half and Thomas who has not played that much all year is in that long. Does Wood have 2 or 3 fouls on him if that is the case?

If Horner don’t get those points he has we are down big.

    Horrible last play for N.E.

  17. SaccoV 03/16/2010 at 7:46 PM #

Agreed MrPlywood. Guy dribbled 3/4 of the clock off before making a Mays-like pass.

Unfortunately, the Connvicts hang on against Northeastern.

Pine Bluff leading Wintrop by 7 in the 2nd half of the play in game.

STEVE LAVIN is calling that game.

    Let’s go W&M!

  19. MrPlywood 03/16/2010 at 7:51 PM #

I would LOL at “Mays-like” but it’s true. They had a sharp-shooter wide open on the right wing, and the dude didn’t give the ball up.

    Misery loves company!

Only down 4 at the half. Could be worse. Second half adjustments will be key.

Can you guys remind me … was Stan Heath coach at Southern Illinois before he went to Arkansas?

  22. BassPacker 03/16/2010 at 7:54 PM #

Woods and Javi no points first half, hard to score from the bench. Johnny Thomas with 4 points, must have shot the ball 6 times. Not sure Sid rotation the first half unless he sensed tired legs and saving for second.

  24. Lunatic Fringe 03/16/2010 at 7:56 PM #

robzucc – I think the idea was to put Thomas on Jones to try to add defensive pressure and keep Wood out of foul trouble. I think as long as we were close Sid was going to try and use Thomas as long as possible.

I expect Wood and CJ to get lot more minutes in second half.

Thanks Gashousepack. I knew I was wrong.
