NC State 58, South Florida 57

Cardiac Pack indeed. No. 6 seed NC State used solid defense and a late-game pass and layup from Scott Wood to Richard Howell to defeat No. 3 seed South Florida in Orlando. The “upset” win sets up a second round trip to No. 2 seed UAB, a team many believed to be on the NCAA Tournament bubble heading into the final weeks of the season. If NC State can secure another victory and UNC upsets Mississippi State in the second round, the Wolfpack and Tar Heels would meet for the third time this season.

GoPack: Howell’s layup pushes hoops past USF, 58-57

Dennis Horner scored 25 points and Richard Howell’s go-ahead layup with eight seconds left barely beat the shot clock as NC State defeated South Florida 58-57 in the first round of the NIT on Tuesday night.

The officials reviewed Howell’s basket to see if it beat the shot clock and the call stood.

USF star Dominiques Jones had a look for a last shot, but passed it to Chris Howard, who then passed it to Augustus Gilchrist, who put up an airball.

The Wolfpack (20-15) trailed for the first 25 minutes of the game as Horner had 14 of NC State’s 22 points in the first.

N&O: Howell’s timely shot lifts Pack to NIT win

Scott Wood couldn’t believe his eyes.

The freshman had been held without a point, and with 11 seconds left in the game, six on the shot clock and N.C. State trailing South Florida 57-56, the inbounds pass had sailed over his head into the backcourt.

As Wood tracked down the ball and moved upcourt, he started to heave a halfcourt shot when he noticed something.

“I was going up to shoot it, and I looked at the clock real quick, and I was like, ‘The clock hasn’t started yet,’ ” said Wood, who fired a pass under the basket to Richard Howell, wide open for a go-ahead layup.

^Wow. I didn’t give him enough credit then, you really have to be playing at your own pace to process all that info. But no way there was only .2 on the shot clock, there were 6 seconds left on the clock when we inbounded the ball. I bet Howell could have pump faked and still beat the buzzer.

My apologies to the Florida reporter.

    anyone know anything about UAB?

“I am glad this season is over, although our team won games it was extremely painful to sit through our scoring droughts and uninspired performances.”

Some advice for the members of ‘Sun Devil Nation’: GET USED TO IT.

Not sure what ASU fans are upset about. Who do they think they are? The Arizona Wildcats?

They did better than expected. They should be happy.

Ben Bridgeman over on the ASU scout board is an interesting dude.

We don’t need any more comments. Gene has won this round. Open a new thread.

There was about 6 left on the shot with 11 and change to play. When they reset the time difference after the play there would of been .2 seconds left on the shot clock according to the radio team.

If this is on youtube we could see the clocks for ourselves and see if the annoucers are right.

^The TV guys timed the play several times, and I believe, came to the conclusion that 4.5 seconds came off the clock. Elementary School math tells me, 1.5 seconds would remain.

The clock shouldn’t have started until Wood touched the ball.

^^Good enough- As long as there was time left is all that mattered.

There was 11 and change on the game clock and 6 on the shot clock before the play. Upon review, the refs ran the game clock down to 8 and said there were only .2 left on the shot clock? Either my engineering degree isn’t worth it’s weight in paper or am I’m missing something here!

Did the refs give them 3 seconds? If so, that’s is a huge difference in being able to dribble all the way down the court the get off a shot vs. having to heave up a desparation 3. It’s over and done and we won, but someone needs to review every call/non-call in that game and fire that crew. Even ACC refs aren’t that obvious.

Correct me if I’m wrong…but if a timing error did occur and Howell’s shot took too long, there is nothing they could have done about it after the fact is there?

I’m not sure what all the clock confusion is. There was 11.2 seconds left when we put the ball in play, with 6 left on the shot clock. The clock didn’t start running until about the time Howell shot. They reviewed the tape and determined (incorrectly) that there should be 8 seconds left. Should have been about 7, according to the TV crew. Either way, there would be nothing left on the shot clock, because we scored.

This wasn’t to our advantage at all. In fact, adding an extra second at that point was an advantage for USF. It didn’t turn out to matter, and in the end was really a non-story. From something I read this morning it sounded like Stan Heath wanted us to have to do it over because the clock didn’t start properly. That’s not how it works, Stan. Sorry, dude.

“Correct me if I’m wrong…but if a timing error did occur and Howell’s shot took too long, there is nothing they could have done about it after the fact is there?”

^I think actually they can. They have to bring out an “official” stopwatch and time the play off the replay monitor.

They actually did take Howell’s points off the board at one point last night, so they almost eff’d that up too (in addition to how they called the game).

The results of play would’ve stood to that point, based on their stopwatch findings.

And Stan Heath was really desperate if he was asking for a do-over. He knows better than that (or at least I hope he does).

I thought the whole event was pretty unprofessional last night. Mistakes by people all over the place. The kids playing deserve better than that even if it is only the NIT.

ASU lost the game last night because they were being coached by Herb Sendek.

NCSU won the game last night because Javi Gonzalez didn’t get his hands on the ball during the final 11 seconds, or 8 seconds, or whatever.

  19. GAWolf 03/17/2010 at 4:31 PM #

61: Javi did have the ball, remember? He’s the one that drove under the basket with no real plan of what to do with it and heaved a pass into triple coverage that somehow deflected out of bounds off of USF barely missing Javi who was at this point standing out of bounds. We then threw the in-bounds pass to their free throw and had a Lorenzo Charles/Derrick Whitenberg-esque pass back under the basket for the go ahead bucket.

  20. Thinkpack17 03/17/2010 at 4:37 PM #

Say what you want about Javi, but he has made some big balls plays for us down the stretch in many games.

The entry pass steal to seal the Florida State win was a thing of beauty. The only reason we had a shot against Arizona/Florida was because of his play.

  21. MrPlywood 03/17/2010 at 5:29 PM #

After watching the State play at the end, I’m curious about the potential over and back. From what I can tell the play was good because Wood did not have full control until after he had crossed the line, but it was close. That could have been a disaster, but Scott’s hustle pulled it out.

  22. 61Packer 03/17/2010 at 6:12 PM #

GAWolf, I am well aware that Javi had the ball prior to the inbounds play with around 11.2 seconds remaining. My whole point was that he didn’t get his hands on the ball again. I firmly believe that if Gonzalez had gotten the inbounds pass, we wouldn’t have won. When he learns he’s not Julius Erving when he drives to the basket, and that there are 4 other players he could pass to, he’ll be a better player.

But with 3 seasons in the books, I doubt it. I thought Mays was the one I didn’t want handling the ball, but at least Julius has the right attitude. I’ve had it with Gonzalez.

  23. Thinkpack17 03/17/2010 at 6:30 PM #

“When he learns he’s not Julius Erving when he drives to the basket, and that there are 4 other players he could pass to, he’ll be a better player.”

On the pick and roll they played him for the pass all the way. The lane parted like the friggin Red Sea! If anything we could blame him for not taking another dribble and trying a finger roll instead of the floater. There are many, many, MANY legitimate gripes about Javi…but being a ball hog is not one of them.

The one thing I took away was how impressed I was with Scott Wood having the composure to do exactly the right thing, despite the time pressure, the ball getting into the back court, being down one, etc.

    Bodes well for future years.
