NC State 58, South Florida 57

Cardiac Pack indeed. No. 6 seed NC State used solid defense and a late-game pass and layup from Scott Wood to Richard Howell to defeat No. 3 seed South Florida in Orlando. The “upset” win sets up a second round trip to No. 2 seed UAB, a team many believed to be on the NCAA Tournament bubble heading into the final weeks of the season. If NC State can secure another victory and UNC upsets Mississippi State in the second round, the Wolfpack and Tar Heels would meet for the third time this season.

GoPack: Howell’s layup pushes hoops past USF, 58-57

Dennis Horner scored 25 points and Richard Howell’s go-ahead layup with eight seconds left barely beat the shot clock as NC State defeated South Florida 58-57 in the first round of the NIT on Tuesday night.

The officials reviewed Howell’s basket to see if it beat the shot clock and the call stood.

USF star Dominiques Jones had a look for a last shot, but passed it to Chris Howard, who then passed it to Augustus Gilchrist, who put up an airball.

The Wolfpack (20-15) trailed for the first 25 minutes of the game as Horner had 14 of NC State’s 22 points in the first.

N&O: Howell’s timely shot lifts Pack to NIT win

Scott Wood couldn’t believe his eyes.

The freshman had been held without a point, and with 11 seconds left in the game, six on the shot clock and N.C. State trailing South Florida 57-56, the inbounds pass had sailed over his head into the backcourt.

As Wood tracked down the ball and moved upcourt, he started to heave a halfcourt shot when he noticed something.

“I was going up to shoot it, and I looked at the clock real quick, and I was like, ‘The clock hasn’t started yet,’ ” said Wood, who fired a pass under the basket to Richard Howell, wide open for a go-ahead layup.

Oy ve, if you’re going to jack up that many 3s, at least make them clean shots and drain a few… sheesh.

    Look’n like a HWSNBN squad out there…

  2. mafpack 03/16/2010 at 10:11 PM #

    sigh… that’s game…

Bill and Mary don’t score a single bucket for the last 5+ minutes of the game and fall 80-72 after leading 72-69… UNC survives a flurry of 3’s (no really… W&M shot 43 trey balls) and advances.

^announcers actually said the WM coach had studied Sendek’s offense. I don’t even know what to say to that. Definitely explains the last 5 minutes. And the losing to carolina.

  4. PackerInRussia 03/16/2010 at 10:46 PM #

Yes, they said the reason why he did so was because he realized that they didn’t have the athletes to run the type of offense he wanted, so they switched to the Sendek/Beilien (however you spell his name) offense.

I love that our well-respected former coach is best regarded for his “offense” that doesn’t use any athleticism.

Hope everyone caught that ASU choke job against Jacksonville.

  7. MrPlywood 03/17/2010 at 1:18 AM #

Dammit, that was OUR wood to chop! So much for the NCAA bubble and the PAC-10 COY. pffffft

“Survive and Advance.” Actually feeling okay about the basketball program right now.

Another ugly win and I don’t care as long as it’s a win! Keep it up Pack. Beat UAB. Jacksonville kept us from giving HWSNBN the chopping that he deserves. Maybe we will get to set things right with UNX. Go Pack!!!

Good game for Horner. I’m glad he played well and stepped up for the team. His opening stretch kept us in the game and allowed us to position ourselves for the win late.

    UAB next baby!

When I was getting ready for work this morning I just kept thinking how cool the end of that game was. Earlier in the season we seemed to wilt under pressure, we’d get to a point where nobody wanted to take a shot, and when they did they missed it. To go into the last seconds, down, and without Tracy, and handle it, was very cool.

We were extremely fortunate to win that game. The guys never quit playing hard despite the poor(UNDERSTATEMENT) officiating. I can be a litte biased but last night’s officiating was a joke.

Great to see Horner playing this way- finishing up in style. 7 rebounds by Wood- he’s so much more than a gunner, and I’ll bet he’ll come out next year with an improving mid range game and maybe attack the basket a little; he has the ability to be special in a couple years, is much more athletic and a better defender than the usual 3 shooter. For all the dissing of the WTNY outlook, I am getting more and more psyched about next year with Brown and Harrow coming along with the budding potential of the younger State players. Besides next year, this year is shaping up very nicely. And judging by my Wake friends, I’d rather be a State fan than Wake at this point, no matter what tourney they’re in.

I wouldn’t say we didn’t wilt this time around. We just played really damn hard and got some good breaks. Javi missed an easy floater – but our guys scrapped and got the board. Then Javi makes a dangerouns inbounds pass which Wood hustles and gets to…then thankfully, SFU leaves the Howell Wide Open under the basket.

We got breaks this game – we made a lot w/ our hustle, but a good team doesn’t leave a person wide open under the basket in the closing seconds of a game. (That’s why they were in the NIT.)

“good team doesn’t leave a person wide open under the basket in the closing seconds of a game. (That’s why they were in the NIT.)”

Lorenzo Charles hit the game winning shot in an NIT game against Houston, in 1983? He was pretty wide open under the basket. 🙂

Fair enough Gene. If SFU had players like Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler – they probably wouldn’t be in the NIT.

SFU did have some players though – that Jones kid was as good as any 2G we’d faced all year. As a matter of fact, I think he was probably the best one that I can think of – thank heavens he passed the ball.

I was on the phone with my father during the last seconds of the game, we both agreed the game would end just as the Arizona game did. Yeah, good thing Jones passed it!

Horner was on fire last night! Great find by Woods at the last instant to get the ball to the Wolf Howell. Since I don’t have ESPN-U in hi-def and the announcers were so nonchalant about it, I had to rewind to make sure the ball actually went through the basket. Terrific fight all night by the Pack.

by the way, heard Terry Gannon talking about Nate McMillan’s son who’s playing for Herb. Anybody recall that recruitment story, whether we were in the mix, did Lowe want him or go after him, why Nate’s boy would end up with that guy, of all places, if he weren’t coming to Raleigh?

Just curious, I’m sure it was discussed at length on here at the time, but I wasn’t around the boards back then.

What a shame to read the story of ASU’s heartbreaking loss to Jacksonville. Sounds like a difficult loss but I’m sure thing will get better. Blowing an 11 point lead with 4 minutes to play, only scoring 6 FT in the final four minutes. Unheard of from a Sendek coached team.

…“It was a difficult way to lose at the end, and end the season,” ASU head coach Herb Sendek said after the game. “It doesn’t take away from the season our guys had, but you’ve gotta give Jacksonville great credit for making the play at the end.”

Sendek also opined on what did his team in. “We didn’t put it away the right way, there’s no question about it. If we make our free throws, if we convert, if we have a couple better press offensive situations, then we’re not having this conversation.”

  22. Sweet jumper 03/17/2010 at 9:12 AM #

We just did not chop enough wood or make all of our threes. lol

  23. Thinkpack17 03/17/2010 at 9:16 AM #

“The inbounds pass sailed high into the backcourt, but freshman Scott Wood — scoreless on the night — tracked the ball down. As he moved upcourt and started to heave a halfcourt shot, he noticed the shot clock was still frozen at six seconds and passed to Richard Howell, who was open under the basket and banked in the go-ahead shot.”

Really? This Florida writer needs to have his creative license revoked. So Scooter ran the ball down while making sure not to go over and back, and with two defenders on him he rose up for a shot only to see the shot clock wasn’t moving. He then decided not to shoot but instead to take a quick survey of the court, he saw Richy just in time and the rest is history.

He must have been in the matrix.

    And the game winner wasn’t a bank-shot.

According to the Wood interview after the game this is exactly what happened. Wood went up to shoot, he saw the clock had not started and decided to pass to a wide open Howell.

Very smart move for a HS player to notice the clock hasn’t started but not as smart for college player when the refs have instant replay. According to the radio announcers Howell made the shot with .2 left on the shot clock.

Yeah, good point choppack. There were several games earlier where we played hard, took it down to the wire, then the breaks didn’t go our way. Maybe I should just say it’s good to see us by the ones to get lucky in the end.

Thinkpack17, Scott Wood did say in his interview that he got confused about time and almost threw up a shot, but then saw the clock and passed to Howell.
