NC State 58, South Florida 57

Cardiac Pack indeed. No. 6 seed NC State used solid defense and a late-game pass and layup from Scott Wood to Richard Howell to defeat No. 3 seed South Florida in Orlando. The “upset” win sets up a second round trip to No. 2 seed UAB, a team many believed to be on the NCAA Tournament bubble heading into the final weeks of the season. If NC State can secure another victory and UNC upsets Mississippi State in the second round, the Wolfpack and Tar Heels would meet for the third time this season.

GoPack: Howell’s layup pushes hoops past USF, 58-57

Dennis Horner scored 25 points and Richard Howell’s go-ahead layup with eight seconds left barely beat the shot clock as NC State defeated South Florida 58-57 in the first round of the NIT on Tuesday night.

The officials reviewed Howell’s basket to see if it beat the shot clock and the call stood.

USF star Dominiques Jones had a look for a last shot, but passed it to Chris Howard, who then passed it to Augustus Gilchrist, who put up an airball.

The Wolfpack (20-15) trailed for the first 25 minutes of the game as Horner had 14 of NC State’s 22 points in the first.

N&O: Howell’s timely shot lifts Pack to NIT win

Scott Wood couldn’t believe his eyes.

The freshman had been held without a point, and with 11 seconds left in the game, six on the shot clock and N.C. State trailing South Florida 57-56, the inbounds pass had sailed over his head into the backcourt.

As Wood tracked down the ball and moved upcourt, he started to heave a halfcourt shot when he noticed something.

“I was going up to shoot it, and I looked at the clock real quick, and I was like, ‘The clock hasn’t started yet,’ ” said Wood, who fired a pass under the basket to Richard Howell, wide open for a go-ahead layup.

Wow, first highlights/recap of the game I could find was at the News and Observer… who apparently isn’t very observant.

    Opening line:

“TAMPA, Fla. – N.C. State got a career night from Dennis Horner – and a little help from the South Florida clock operator – and pulled out a 58-57 win over the Bulls in the first round of the NIT on Tuesday night.”
    http://blogs.newsobserver.com/accnow/nc-state-58-south-florida-57

Yes, if by ‘a little help’ you actually mean gave USF an extra second more than they deserved, we absolutely got a ‘little help’… was this moron even watching the game or did he wait to see the box score and write this up on the fly?

Has anyone found video highlights of this yet, I’d like to review them…?

I’ve got a quick question. What the hell is going on with WRAL. All day the headline was UNSux has a game vs William & Mary. As of right now, our score and the fact that we won is still not even posted on the WRAL front page under “sports”. I think WRAL has forgotten what “RAL” means and what city they are in, and which campus is right across the damn street. If they want to suck on UNSux’s balls, go be WCHH or something. Screw WRAL.

This game was officiated better than any of the ones we played in the ACCT.

    GO PACK!

Tony Haynes with the understatement of the year:

“It was clear that the players and coaches were frustrated by some of the officiating, but they are tough and just kept plugging.”

do we know when the UAB game is set?

Also, nice to get the win in a tough road game, however – I’ve been one of those more optimistic about Lowe, but the end game management for the past two has been far too reminiscent of the last two guys – bad or no shots on offense combined with putting them on the line on D – terrible recipe for holding onto a lead. I’d like to see that corrected, and quick.

What’s up w/ the N&O blog saying the clock operator helped State? Give me a break.

^I can’t agree with you there Texpack.

I thought the crew in the FSU tournament game did a great job. Tonight’s crew was wildly inconsistent with one of the worst performances I’ve seen all season. (In my not so humble opinion).

But we can agree to disagree 🙂

  12. Stillastatefan 03/16/2010 at 9:36 PM #

William and Mary launching threes from everywhere and making a good many of them. Only down 2.

  13. mafpack 03/16/2010 at 9:36 PM #

I was wondering the same thing about WRAL aPACK – they’ve got the UNX and WM half time recap and scores up, but not even a mention of our game or the final score now that our game has been over for almost an hour.

LoL – they have ‘UNC leads W&M 45-41 with 17:27 left in the second half’ up but no final score for us… awesome.

Edit: They finally put the recap up 2 minutes after they posted the minute by minute update to the UNX game.

Guess what guys….WRAL does NOT run or even control the WRAL site….The site is managed by another division, not the TV Guys…

WRAL sports guys, off the record, tell you that they HAVE NO INPUT….and the writers who do the copy for the TV guys (they do most of it themselves….unlike the talking heads who just read the teleprompter…like a certain resident of the WH…). Thus, they have more Personal control on the Over-the-air content…

So fuss at WRAL.com….NOT WRAL TV…

PROPS TO HOWELL-REPLAY LAST MINUTE OFF GAME…MADE FREETHROW…MADE SHOT FROM WOOD…BLOCK SHOT OF USF PLAYER…AND NEXT YEAR?

  16. aPACKadeez 03/16/2010 at 9:38 PM #

I hear you mafpack. Those of us in Raleigh need to boycott the dumbasses across the street at WRAL.

  17. GoldenChain 03/16/2010 at 9:40 PM #

Funny, I thought the 1st ACCT game was terrificly officiated. They let ’em play and didn’t call the ticy-tack stuff. The officials weren’t part of the game…unlike to night. Look at the foul differential.

Congrats to Lowe. I was up on him early then lost faith in the mid-season slump but I have to say he’s done a decent job over the last 8.

  18. mafpack 03/16/2010 at 9:44 PM #

Yeah… I’m not sure where the Out-Of-Left-Field defense of WRAL channel 5 on the TV came from, we were specifically discussing WRALsportsfan.com … regardless of who is or isn’t responsible for it.

In any case, definitely glad to see a gutty win in the NIT… now if only UNX would screw this up and end their season tonight!

  19. ADVENTUROO 03/16/2010 at 9:53 PM #

Mafpack, I thought you were talking about the WRAL.com site….since, when I clicked on it, it surprised me that they were running the UNX v W&M scores….and you had to go down to the sports section to find our score….which was in small type…

I am very critical of the “DOT.com” folks at RAL…and I think that the on-air folks are really pretty good….If you look at the network folks that started at WRAL, having been on it as an on-air talent is a real plus on a resume…

Jim Goodmon is trying to make bread on the internet…that is why it is litered with real estate and car ads….

The RAL site is not that great and the Sportsfan site is even worse…

But, if you want to protect and boycott, then you will have to find the basement where the geeks live…and I do NOT think that is on Western Blvd.

  20. ADVENTUROO 03/16/2010 at 9:59 PM #

If you read the WRAL Sportsfan site, the writer says that the officals had to review the video to make sure that Howell’s shot was in time….obviously they don’t give the Geeks a TV and/or Cable…

    CRAPPY….

  23. mafpack 03/16/2010 at 10:01 PM #

Fair enough, the content for the wralsportfan.com site actually comes from 99.9 TheFAN staff and it’s affiliates (like 620AM) as Adam Gold is doing the live blog for UNC and Mark Thomas used to regularly update that site with his blog and articles.

Normally I like the site, but indeed, lately they’ve been straying more and more towards the UNX side of the media.

Though to be fair, the afternoon crew on 99.9 has given more balanced attention to NC State since taking over for Mike and Mark a few weeks back than we’ve received in many many moons on sports talk radio… so I’m appreciative for that.

True, not true. They produce the content, IBS does the backend, WRAL produces Golo. I know the former site producer, Angela Connor, pretty well.
