NC State 58, South Florida 57

Cardiac Pack indeed. No. 6 seed NC State used solid defense and a late-game pass and layup from Scott Wood to Richard Howell to defeat No. 3 seed South Florida in Orlando. The “upset” win sets up a second round trip to No. 2 seed UAB, a team many believed to be on the NCAA Tournament bubble heading into the final weeks of the season. If NC State can secure another victory and UNC upsets Mississippi State in the second round, the Wolfpack and Tar Heels would meet for the third time this season.

GoPack: Howell’s layup pushes hoops past USF, 58-57

Dennis Horner scored 25 points and Richard Howell’s go-ahead layup with eight seconds left barely beat the shot clock as NC State defeated South Florida 58-57 in the first round of the NIT on Tuesday night.

The officials reviewed Howell’s basket to see if it beat the shot clock and the call stood.

USF star Dominiques Jones had a look for a last shot, but passed it to Chris Howard, who then passed it to Augustus Gilchrist, who put up an airball.

The Wolfpack (20-15) trailed for the first 25 minutes of the game as Horner had 14 of NC State’s 22 points in the first.

N&O: Howell’s timely shot lifts Pack to NIT win

Scott Wood couldn’t believe his eyes.

The freshman had been held without a point, and with 11 seconds left in the game, six on the shot clock and N.C. State trailing South Florida 57-56, the inbounds pass had sailed over his head into the backcourt.

As Wood tracked down the ball and moved upcourt, he started to heave a halfcourt shot when he noticed something.

“I was going up to shoot it, and I looked at the clock real quick, and I was like, ‘The clock hasn’t started yet,’ ” said Wood, who fired a pass under the basket to Richard Howell, wide open for a go-ahead layup.

Looking at again on DVR … Howell blocked the shot by Gilchrist. Howell really stepped up big after Tracy uncermoniously was fouled out of the game.

Gutty win. The refs were horrible and we came through in the clutch. You have to love seeing two freshmen make the game winning play.

did you hear Dean Smith broke his leg. Yep, he did it climbing a ladder and fell off. He was trying to get his name off the Dean E. Smith Center

Let’s survive and advance against UA freaking B and then bring on the Tarholios.

Then Herb, we’re going to put your ass in a pipe and smoke you, son.

The pack should have 22 victories to their record now. They had to beat USF, the officials, and even the timekeepers tried to pull a fast one (yeah, I know, they TOTALLY forgot to turn it on). Maybe it was just me but it seemed the officials were too enthusiastic about running to the tv camera to see what the time should really be set at.

    Sidney in the postgame interview:

“… really tough game to play. You have no idea what is going to be called. I said ‘Let me do the talking, you guys just concentrate on the game’.

… Our defense (on the last play) was designed to hopefully have Jones give up the ball. Farnold gambled, but Jones was unselfish and Richard (Howell) was right there and outstanding.”

He praises the group as tough and thick-skinned, lauds Horner’s play and gives a shout out to Johnny Thomas for his energetic play in the first half. Says “Ready to go to war with these guys again.”

freshman to freshman to win. I’ll have to give him his props and that is that Mr. Jones is one tough kid. He needs to work on his FT shooting.

The tarholes have owned us this year…what is going to make this game different? They will wax us again.

“Wood’s basketball IQ won this game!!!!!!!!”

And Howell’s game-winning free throw. That young man showed some ice water in his veins. He was looking for the pass, caught without fumbling it and went straight up!

  24. newt 03/16/2010 at 9:24 PM #

I hate that the clock deal happened.

I like to keep playing; I’ve NEVER seen the NIT get coverage like it has the past few days and tonight.

Scott Wood did a GREAT Interview on the Post Game….it was HE (Mr. Freshman) that told (asked) Sidney that HE needed to be on the same side as Tracy….the announcers credited Sid with that….this kid will be GOOD….he also has a sense of humor….he told them that he had only LENT his 3 point shooting to Horner and he was going to get it back…

Yes, I DID hear about Dean’s leg….Roy told the BOT that unless Dean removed the name, that he would cut off his pension. Roy is also supervising the Pick and Remove (for those of you familiar with Robotic Pick and Place technology) Robots. That way, he will be able to totally handle rowdy fan ejections from his iPhone…

Roy is really a good coach…gets emotional….this season is wearing him thin. He lost it, literally, when he had the PC fan ejected.

There HAS to be some chemistry issues with all the Big Heads that he brought in…and it is driving him MAD that he can’t control it.

T’will be interesting to see who comes back NEXT year…then who (from this and next year’s class) leaves AFTER next year’s season…

    GO PACK
