Wolfpack dribbles away shot at championship game

Georgia Tech 57
NC State 54

NC State may have lost today’s ACC semifinal game against Georgia Tech back in January of this 2009 when then high school stud recruit, Derrick Favors, ultimately picked Georgia Tech over NC State.

Freshman forward Derrick Favors scored 17 points to lead the seventh-seeded Yellow Jackets to a 57-54 win and into the final against top-seeded Duke.

The 11th-seeded Pack was able to withstand the size mismatches against Clemson and FSU but it can’t get the same outside shots (6-26 from 3-point range) and couldn’t contain Favors, who scored five points in a critical sequence.

If Favors’ decision and ultimate presence for the Yellow Jackets didn’t do it alone, the Wolfpack’s atrocious free throw shooting certainly aided the cause. On the afternoon, the Wolfpack shot just 10 of 19 from the free throw line, including misses on the front end of multiple one and one opportunities.

The play of the game clearly happened as described below:

Favors’ step-out jumper at 2:50 gave GT a 47-46 lead it held for the remainder of the game. Favors was grabbed on a breakaway by Javier Gonzalez, after Gonzalez turned the ball over at midcourt, and he scored three points on the intentional foul free throw and the ensuing possession.

    Horner, quit shooting 3’s!

Javi sucks donkey balls. Our offense is slower than the Princeton BS. Let Degand bring the ball up and play the big men at the same time. My gosh Javi runs a slow tempo.

Im getting sick of the “tired” explanations. We have shot like this, at times, all season. We can bounce back in the 2nd though.

Cheezus, I remember the Thacker and Packer game calling. Not as bad as Dickie V but pretty bad. With Bones McKinney as the in game reporter.

IMHO, Sid should be using more players. Used at the right times, Thomas, Painter, Davis on fresh legs might really help.

how bad can we loose this game and still hope for les to pull some strings and get us into the nit

javi is doing was he’s told… i can understand wanting to limit possesions, but every time we do that, we end up shooting some kind of desperation shot with 1 second on the clock… if we’re going to limit possesions, we have to score. wood needs to make himself open better and smith needs to look for him. has smith dished one out to wood yet in the tournament?

The game is basically tied IMO –

To shoot that poorly and score women’s private high school game type numbers in the first half, we’re quite fortunate to be down by only 10. There’s hope in 10. We could be down 25 with no hope whatsoever.

we will loose by at least 25

    Chris92heel,

What do you mean when you say the game is basically tied?

    One answer at this point.

Full-court press Tech for the next 20 minutes. They will turn it over 15 times, and we’ll get some easy buckets, which we badly need. (For the record, we’ve pressed exactly twice today, leading to exactly two turnovers.)

Use as many players a necessary to keep fresh legs – Painter & Davis will be very good at the press due to their length & quickness.

But if we try the same old stuff, we’re going to be praying that we happen to get hot, and they happen to get cold. That’s not coaching – it’s wishful thinking.

i back the pack, except when we’re down by 10 at the half?

  16. GolenbockHater 03/13/2010 at 4:54 PM #

maybe start the press… There’s our new coach!

G-Man changes ties every game…..he needed to, the last one was gawd awlful.

  19. gashousepack 03/13/2010 at 4:55 PM #

G-man needs more than a tie change.

first 3 minutes of play will dictate whether or not the tv stays on…

    Dear NC State Wolfpack,

You guys are young, in the prime of your lives. Some of you may be playing the last game of your season, some the last game of your career. Play like it. You cannot be tired. There is no tired. There is only win.

    Cheers,
    MrP

1 for 12 on threes and out-rebounded by 11 and down by 10.

It’s amazing we’re anywhere within striking distance.

    still,

i mean that I live in ATL and have watched GT all year. I reiterate, they are the dumbest team in the conference. They have two first round draft picks in their front court, but they WILL start trippin in the 2nd half.

  24. ibackthepack1160 03/13/2010 at 4:57 PM #

we need to get some fresh legs for the 2nd half ccome on guys 20 more minutes play your hearts out

  25. Stillastatefan 03/13/2010 at 4:57 PM #

Brando says State might have to put GT on the line more? What?? The Jackets shot 11 free throws in the first half to State’s 2. How many do they need? Jeez. Every time we played defense inside they called a foul.
