Wolfpack dribbles away shot at championship game

Georgia Tech 57
NC State 54

NC State may have lost today’s ACC semifinal game against Georgia Tech back in January of this 2009 when then high school stud recruit, Derrick Favors, ultimately picked Georgia Tech over NC State.

Link to N&O

Freshman forward Derrick Favors scored 17 points to lead the seventh-seeded Yellow Jackets to a 57-54 win and into the final against top-seeded Duke.

The 11th-seeded Pack was able to withstand the size mismatches against Clemson and FSU but it can’t get the same outside shots (6-26 from 3-point range) and couldn’t contain Favors, who scored five points in a critical sequence.

If Favors’ decision and ultimate presence for the Yellow Jackets didn’t do it alone, the Wolfpack’s atrocious free throw shooting certainly aided the cause. On the afternoon, the Wolfpack shot just 10 of 19 from the free throw line, including misses on the front end of multiple one and one opportunities.

The play of the game clearly happened as described below:

Favors’ step-out jumper at 2:50 gave GT a 47-46 lead it held for the remainder of the game. Favors was grabbed on a breakaway by Javier Gonzalez, after Gonzalez turned the ball over at midcourt, and he scored three points on the intentional foul free throw and the ensuing possession.

Well I really enjoyed the ACCT, and I never imagined I would. The team was clearly tired today, we had a ton of open 3s and missed most of them. A couple more of those and the game was ours. Heck, if we could have elevated our first half to ‘bad’ from ‘horrible’ we’d have run away with it.

The team exceeded every reasonable person’s expectations and gave us a fun tourney, with hopefully a post-season appearance to top it off. And, WE OUTLASTED CAROLINA!!

My thanks and congratulations to Sid and the team. Here’s to a better year next year.

e certainly is no Savior, and had the worst record of any coach in the history of nc state men’s basketball.

10 years of no championships is more than 4, last time I did the math.

I’m not disappointed with the tournament, I’m very disappointed with the season. WTNY

I’ve had time to stew over this one and I have very mixed feelings. On the plus side, it was a good effort, we had a chance to tie in the semi-finals of the ACC, the team played hard and did some nice things together. Good last 7 or 8 games for the Wolfpack and we’ll look to do some damage in the NIT — which by all accounts is about the ceiling for what most of us would have expected at the beginning to the season.

On the minus side, that was a terribly played basketball game by both teams setting ACC basketball back a bunch of years. It was like watching high school soccer — nobody ever scored, turnovers, foul after foul, and just God awful free throw shooting. Terrible execution down the stretch for the Pack. Missed free throws. Turnovers. Bad possessions. No movement. Must have been the legs.

I’m not one to normally call a player out, but Javi’s play was one of the dumbest plays I’ve ever seen made in a big basketball game, high school, college or pro. The turnover, as bad as it was at that juncture, that happens. But come on man, don’t compound it by tackling the guy, giving him 2 free throws and the Jackets the ball out of bounds. That was 3 points given away to GT at a crucial time, and it cost us. Stupid stupid play and it broke our back.

GT is NOT a good basketball team. They are a bunch of athletes that play jump ball at the rim — that’s the only way they can score. They can’t get the ball in against pressure to save their lives. They are a 1 and done NCAA team, and Duke is going to absolutely wax them tomorrow. 20+ is my prediciton. Wish it would be us with a chance to cut the nets down. Maybe next year…

I understand that refs don’t want to decide a game at the end, but when you don’t call a foul at the end that would have been a foul at any other point in the game, then you do help decide it. Disappointing to see them lose. I appreciate the effort from the team.

i just saw the highlights on espn news it makes me sick you can clearly see degand getting fouled. and pakman you have to understand that sid wants a pro style system not a gimmicky high court offense. he needs the players for his system to work and he is going to get them next year, but if we struggle a little bit you have to remember that the incoming guys will only be freshman. and dont get me wrong i def think and want us to be beating duke and carolina year in and year out but just because we are struggling right now doesnt mean that you can or should give up on sid he needs a quick scoring guard that can handle the ball to run his system and ryan harrow is it. just look at ryans comments he has already bought into the system sidney and state he has been on the recorded saying that he is coming to state to turn the program around and bring the best players (cj leslie, lo brown) with him.

hard fought loss in a otherwise horribly played game. But when you play games back to back to back, this is what you get. And the styles did not help. State’s slow down ball control against the athletic pound it inside approach!! But i cannot fault the effort or do i dare say this,The coaching!!!!, Hopefully, the team will get a NIT bid and play some more and i would love to have them play arizona state at home!!!!! Dream game!!
    In reynolds!!!
Besides, Gtech will get crushed by Duke sunday. Four games in four days and
Duke has not played well at all in GBO town and what is up with the attendance??
    Where are the fans????

  8. whope90 03/13/2010 at 7:43 PM #

Bu we can all be proud of the effort and the determination and pride of all the players and coaches!! We were so close to the title game and to think we would of had a chance against Duke. But tech has no chance, heck they cannot even get the ball in bounds and are so lucky that a bad dribble bound off a foot and a intentional foul saved them. They are one and done in the Ncaa’s as Favors bolts for the NBA!! But i have never seen any team in ACC history have to play back to back to back games against the roughest, toughfest and most physical teams in ACC history. Clemson, Florida state and Gtech play football on the basketball court save with Vtech that i am suprised that hockey sticks are not thrown out on the court.

We were so close yet so far and i cannot blame the intentional foul on Javi G because he was frustrated and tried to stop Favors from dunking it!!!
I have a feeling that State will be playing deep into the NIT with this slow pace while all the ACC teams other than Duke will lose early in the NCAA”s. I mean,Florida State is going to the dance?? With clemson and then tech??? These teams barley dribble the ball and forget about style points!! All they do is block and tackle!! AS Hoosiers coach, Coach Fry would say<"Your team is a bunch of Gorillas!!!"

^Nobody cares, that’s what. It’s been some downright awful basketball any way you cut it. We’ve actually helped to elevate the profile of the league this week. But let me tell you there has been some flat out sloppy play this ACC Tournament, and it’s no secret.

  10. Alpha Wolf 03/13/2010 at 7:49 PM #

I thought that State played well in the ACCT until today, given the opponent. Clemson likes sloppy games and makes them that way. FSU is a matchup nightmare. Against GT, State was flat out tired. Three game in 66 hours is a lot of hoops and GT just got lucky when we lost our poise just for a minute. We still had a chance to tie, but the guys were just wiped out.

    And so it goes.

As for the ACC setting hoops back, I disagree. Thing is, all college hoops is lacking fundamentals and the ACC is just another part of it. With only one premiere legit top-10 team, there are a lot of mediocre teams with major flaws in the conference. Nonetheless, while it wasn’t what I would call pretty hoops it was worse in the Pac-10, the bottom half of the SEC and the Big 12 and Big 10.

Now, with new players with more talent in the backcourt, my expectations go up. It’s NCAA or bust next year.

  11. hoop 03/13/2010 at 7:56 PM #

As bad as Javi’s intentional foul was, it ended up only costing us additional points because they kept missing. And a better team than GT would have blown us out of the water. They shot less than 50% free throws last time I remember them announcing it. If we were a better team it wouldn’t have been close and we would have pulled away. We need better athletes!

  12. NJpack 03/13/2010 at 7:58 PM #

Now that we have lost I must say I’d rather see us lose to GT than to Duke. If we would have pulled out today’s game, our legs would have been totally shot tomorrow, they were mostly shot today. Imagine Lo Brown instead of Degand and you get a glimpse of the potential next season.

If we can beat ASU in the NIT that would be the moral victory of the season, kind of like the mediocre football season highlighted by beating UNC.

  13. Wulfpack 03/13/2010 at 8:07 PM #

I’m watching Cal and Washington and it has been a very well played game. Washington won 79-75, putting VT’s tournament chances in jeopardy. The Hokies need to hope Kentucky beats Miss State and Ohio State beats Minnesota tomorrow. Those are two more bids that could go the other way.

I also watched the Ohio State/Illinois game, and it was a very well played basketball game in double overtime. Kansas/Kansas State is also well played. Want to bet WVU/G’town will be well played?

We have some good teams in our conference, but I do honestly feel as of late there has been some pretty bad play across the board from our tournament caliber teams. We’re becoming more and more like the Big 10 with all these games in the 50s.

    pitiful….just pitiful.
    every game. every team.
    down year for the ACC.
is the NCAA gonna be the
    Big East Invitational?

  15. gashousepack 03/13/2010 at 8:45 PM #

I’ll have to say that I’m proud of the Pack.

For a team that was picked DFL, and made a run to the semi’s of the ACC tourney, that is pretty good.

They played out the season well, and that was a surprise given the first 3/4 of the ACC. The team showed a lot of heart when it could have been easy to roll over and quit more than once in post-season play.

Give it up to Sid for coaching a good group of guys with a lot of promise for next season.

    1) I understand that Favors is one and done.
    2) We had a better year than Carolina.
    3) I think we take the momentum and put it to use in the NIT.
    4) Harrow and Brown will improve this team if Lowe can control the team chemistry.

^agreed alpha. clemson, gt, fsu.. all of them play some pretty scrappy helter skelter blacktop basketball.. all that is lacking is the chain nets. it works for some teams, but i hate to see it. fsu’s defense is good enough to dictate anyone’s pace, clemson’s press adds to chaos and gt doesn’t have a scheme.. they just play 1 on 1. so, there was no system with our opponents other than just deterministic chaos. but i will add that this is what some of the big east teams looked like just a few years ago… i never want to see NCSU play this way, but it’s worked in that league.

all in all, i really thought we’d be ranked around the 7th spot at the end of the season. but with some of the close losses and that bad stretch in the middle that killed us. they did alright.

this team really did “overachieved” in this tournament. the composure they showed really impressed me, i never thought i would say this but.. we really don’t have the best talent in the league.. and we haven’t for years. with some talent upgrades stepping into the mix next season.. i think these boys are going to be really tough. from fr javi to jr javi, i’ve seen alot of improvement.. and he started well behind the type of guard we expect at NCSU. they way we played coming into the tournament and up to today, we could be playing on sunday… but our legs gave out. this team just doesn’t have much offense at all… we will be very good next year.

Just a tired looking game. Props for the effort getting the lead in the 2nd half. The effort was there, just not the energy. And Javi- if he could tame the Jekyll and Hyde thing. He’s so good at times now, has developed a lot and can be clutch, but that shirt tackle was ridiculous. Gotta say I’m pleased with how the season is ending.

ACC play has been very lousy compared to past history. Actually, college basketball is not anywhere as good as it use to be 15+ yrs ago. The best players play one or two years and then go to the NBA. A significant portion of these guys sit on the bench or have to go to Europe to play. The NBA has created this situation because they draft based on potential. No one wants to miss out on the next Kobe Bryant, etc….
Now, we can say this recent team has not been affected by this, however, this would not be the case. As good players leave, whether it is Duke/Carolina or whoever, this opens up spots for the best players to continue to go to these schools. For example, if Wall goes pro from Kentucky, this opens up another point guard spot to fill from the 2010 class. If he could not go pro, that good pg is going to go to a different school. This creates better competition, better teams, and overall better players….

The people that are questioning the rotation…stop. Just stop. You have no idea what is going on in practice, you have no idea what is going on in the scouting/injury reports. We have a game where we are struggling to score and everyone except Tracy is terrible from the line and your answer is Josh Davis? Vandy is a liability on the defensive end so your answer is Painter? Have you guys watched Josh and Deshawn play this year? Attention armchair coaches…STOP. Just stop.

    Tough loss. Winnable game.

  23. Wolfy__79 03/13/2010 at 10:46 PM #

well, i think we’re in the later years of the 1 & done mentality for the majority of the players. there will be the few than can make the early jump.. but to me, i see teams recruting away from the onedon’s. and that’s another whole side of the argument, you don’t have to recruit an entire roster of these guys.

i think another aspect of the lower level of play is this infatuation with the three point basket. when they go in, they’re great but it’s not a high percentage shot.. EVER. the mid range jumpshot is completely lost to most college players. but this is one of the most effective areas to score.?.

i think the lack of fundamentals is only a trend and one that we’ll have to live through. kind of one of those princeton offense things. but i’ll have to say, closer towards the end of the season.. i saw the team boxing out, hitting ft’s… a couple of your fundamentals.

it is definetly the nba’s and the ncaa’s fault for onedon’s. the nba should respect the maturing process, and the ncaa’s should leverage scholarships to insist players take advantage of the academic side of the free ride. but on our team, i see howell, wood, mays, painter, davis, vandenburg, cj, staying for four years. tracy too. i don’t know about harrow, he’ll give us atleast two don’t ya think. lozo? don’t know about him either. but it really sounds like leslie is out for one/two tops before he sets his sail.

so judging by what we’ll have in the next two years, if sidney lands another guard in 2011 class to work under harrow, mays and brown.. the trend for good guard play should be in tact. the forwards are there.. i’m sure vandenburg will eventually start dunking instead of a seven foot sweeping hook shot from two ft out.

people can bash sidney about his record, hell i do it all the time. noone likes losing, including him. but you have to admit, he’s pretty solid towards the end of the year, particularly in ACC tournament play. he’s done alright, but sure there’s much room for improvement. i think all of us are in the same boat, i think i say, that we don’t want any fluke wins.. we don’t want to “compete” with duke/unc-ch! we want to kick their asses? am i right?? i truly believe that sidney can be successful in raleigh!

  24. Wolfy__79 03/13/2010 at 10:54 PM #

and whoever said that the big east title game was going to be well played is wrong. and evidently hasn’t seen a big yeast game all year. they play hard nosed, scrappy basketball.

  25. Tau837 03/13/2010 at 11:21 PM #

I like and pull for all of our players, so I’m not trying to put them down. That said, assuming Harrow and Brown are as good as advertised, I’m really looking forward to seeing how good Smith, Howell, and Wood can be with guards who can do all of the following things consistently and effectively: make decisions, handle the ball, pass, penetrate, play defense, and shoot.
