Wolfpack dribbles away shot at championship game

Georgia Tech 57
NC State 54

NC State may have lost today’s ACC semifinal game against Georgia Tech back in January of this 2009 when then high school stud recruit, Derrick Favors, ultimately picked Georgia Tech over NC State.

Link to N&O

Freshman forward Derrick Favors scored 17 points to lead the seventh-seeded Yellow Jackets to a 57-54 win and into the final against top-seeded Duke.

The 11th-seeded Pack was able to withstand the size mismatches against Clemson and FSU but it can’t get the same outside shots (6-26 from 3-point range) and couldn’t contain Favors, who scored five points in a critical sequence.

If Favors’ decision and ultimate presence for the Yellow Jackets didn’t do it alone, the Wolfpack’s atrocious free throw shooting certainly aided the cause. On the afternoon, the Wolfpack shot just 10 of 19 from the free throw line, including misses on the front end of multiple one and one opportunities.

The play of the game clearly happened as described below:

Favors’ step-out jumper at 2:50 gave GT a 47-46 lead it held for the remainder of the game. Favors was grabbed on a breakaway by Javier Gonzalez, after Gonzalez turned the ball over at midcourt, and he scored three points on the intentional foul free throw and the ensuing possession.

i love how mike giminski was so quick to jump all over javi for that turn over lets not mention there was a reach in foul that was never called 2 seconds before

It must just be my eyes, how the CRAP was that not a foul against Degand when he tried to rebound Javi’s last shot? They even showed the replay, with his fingers clearly on the ball the GT player grabs his forearm and RIPS him down to the floor… damn it.

We certainly had our chances to win this one flat out (free throws anyone… sigh), I just hate seeing the Refs let Bell’s technical committed right after Javi’s technical go uncalled and that final play… gah, it makes my blood boil. ‘Let um play’ is one thing, but slinging Degand to the hardwood to prevent a rebound on the final shot of a close game is just inexcusable.

I’ll play the brightside card – in an ACC semi-final game, the Pack had a shot to tie in the last seconds – that’s way more than anyone expected. I’m not a moral victory kind of guy, they should have won. But I think they’ve played themselves into the NIT, so that’s good too…

Is Painter in Sid’s doghouse? Vandenberg plays hard but he was a serious liability on the defensive end.

  5. Stillastatefan 03/13/2010 at 6:21 PM #

Granted Painter might have been just as much a liability.

And I’m usually not one to bitch about the refs, but GT got away with multiple fouls on Tracy and others in the paint. I don’t care if you’re blocking with one hand, if you’re pushing off on the body with the other hand, that’s a foul.

That said, State had plenty of chances to put this one away.

degand was fouled my blind 90 year old grandmother saw it you can swallow the whistle like you swallow carolinas cock or whoever else we play these days, when it comes down to it our season is 360 degrees diffrent if 4 shots went our way instead

  8. pakmannfay 03/13/2010 at 6:24 PM #

MVP of the game with that stupid intential foul because he was embarassed, way to go Javi, and thanks for the great free throw shooting, by the team. We gave this one away, not the refs. I hope we get what everyone expects next year, because I can not take another one of these years, even with the incoming talent, doesn’t mean the other teams won’t have talent. I am tired of being at the bottom, I want a contender, and can’t remember when we did that last. No more excuses for Sid.

dont forget abou josh davis where the hell is he?
    FIRE FOWLER
    then out with lowe

I look at it this way. The Refs kept GT in the game, we just didn’t play well enough to beat a highly talented, ultrally bad team.

I’m not that upset about this loss, because I was not looking forward to watching Duke beat us by 30 tomorrow.

Would have been nice to have gotten a freaking call every once in a while, though.

As terrible as the Javi foul was, it only cost us 1 point. We win this game easily if we shot even an average percentage.

  12. MrPlywood 03/13/2010 at 6:34 PM #

Regardless of the what ifs, I enjoyed watching State play 2 more times than expected. Hopefully there’s more to come.

Degand definitely got fouled. It would’ve been nice to at least have that opportunity even if there would’ve been only 2 seconds left.

    Rodney Monroe vs. WF anyone?

I like how GT got warned for jawing at us twice but once again the only technical/intentional is called on us.

But, the refs definitely didn’t cost us this game. We took control in the second half but just couldn’t pull away. It was right there. That GT team was primed for a loss. I would be shocked if they win tomorrow.

avery i AGREE with fowller but in no way should we get rid of lowe
1 he is one of us and led us to a national title
2 he has had to deal with sendeks mediocrity team that just gave up after a better player got more attention then they did with sidney
3 after a season we just had there is no other coach that would have a recruiting class we have coming in next year if cj decides to bless us with his skill we can be a top 3 class in the nation
4 sid is a great tourney coach we only play better in the acc tourney and i beilve in the nit hopefully this year and being a good tourney coach is going to matter next year just ask harrow

If the stats at si.com are right State shot 21 more shots than GT. State made one more field goal and made four more three-pointers. GT was 19-32 from the line, while State was 10-19. I know some of those were State fouling at the end, but that’s still a big discrepancy. Keep in mind that GT needed a win to have a better chance at an at-large bid. In the end, however, when you shoot 21 more shots than your opponent, you should win. And if State made just 13-19 foul shots, the game goes into OT.

i’ll play a brightside myself. i’m extremely proud of the WOLFPACK. despite having a pitiful midseason losing streak, they respond with several hard fought wins. they played well on thursday, had an off first half last nite but finished with more solid play. then, coming out tired tonight against a team that had 3+ hours more rest and alot more talent.. and it was still our game to win. didn’t quite have enough today. this team definetly played their hearts out. ya know, its pretty tough when you have to manufacture all of your offense out of one forward. they played well. sidney did a great job. i certainly hated to see javi lose his composure with the foul, but they played thru the rest of the game and still tried. this team was the better team today, gt just had better athletes. this team didn’t quit all year, i’m very proud of these kids!

Come on guys. we got further than most of you imagined. We had a chance to win this but winning 4 has never happened b4 anyway. A good run. This team lacks talent. We all know it. Yet their little run was more than anyone thought could happpen. No I still don’t like Lowe, or Fowler as coach/AD, but these guys(players) still put all their effort into this, and it felt like now (vs earlier) they really cared about the outcome deep down inside, not just typical comments you hear after the reg season losses.

Let’s hope they learn some more about themselves in the NIT that they can apply with at least 2 good guards coming in.

What a different tone here from last night.

Really guys look at it for what it is: the team overachieved the last few games and damn near did it again today.

Tired legs and tired minds did them in. Javi knows better than to make some of the mistakes he made, and Horner is a better long range shooter. But….not today.

I am proud of them, they never gave in and even if this undertalented team came up short, they still made it further than UNC, Maryland, VT and several other teams in the ACC Tournament.

And for all you guys saying “Fire Lowe” just give it a rest for one night.

    I agree completely A W

  20. Stillastatefan 03/13/2010 at 6:44 PM #

I agree that Sid should get another year. I think we saw some potential in this year’s team.

    I won’t cry when Fowler’s gone.

  21. ncsu05mit10 03/13/2010 at 6:49 PM #

We just didn’t make outside shots, or free throws. Degand really hurt us with his shooting, though he was a spark penetrating with some fastbreak points. But he left a lot at the line and didn’t hit one outside jumper.

Horner was terrible from the field today. I don’t know the stats, but I believe he was 2-12 from the field, 1-8 from 3’s, with the other FG being a dunk. That has to be better to win.

This is the type of game that results from physical play that takes Smith out of it early on. Our offense couldn’t run through him and it showed.

But it also shows all it takes is knocking down open looks with PG penetration being the key (Mays a non-factor, Javi the only hope).

The disparity on the boards is still disturbing, but seriously, imagine THIS team with Brown and Harrow— it’s an easy win.

    Oh well… WTNY.

“And I’m usually not one to bitch about the refs, but GT got away with multiple fouls on Tracy and others in the paint”

Tracy would get to the line twice as much if he wore either of the two blue uniforms…

  23. BSIE80 03/13/2010 at 6:54 PM #

    Great effort! Good tournament!
There are a ton of what ifs, however, the team played their heart out and came up short. I am extremely happy that we did this well.
Great job Sid, coaches, and team.
Here’s hoping u get a shot at NIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  24. pakmannfay 03/13/2010 at 6:57 PM #

Next year for Sid is a done deal, but for Ibackthepack, he certainly is no Savior, and had the worst record of any coach in the history of nc state men’s basketball. If it don’t get done next year, what will we come up with to keep him another year. Wait til next year. A great player doesn’t guarantee a great coach, “83” is history, and I am tired of history. What progress have we made under Sid. Remember the real truth, not a dream. We aren’t playing horseshoes, and maybe I am just crazy enough to think if we get the right coach, and players we can compete with Duke/UNC year in and year out. But how far are we willing to go to accomplish that. Fire Fowler (Fowlup) and maybe we will find out.

  25. ibackthepack1160 03/13/2010 at 7:03 PM #

in my opinion and im sure in yalls we have to be nit bound after that great at the end of the season and the 2 wins in the acc tourney our resume is better than half of the bubble teams going to the big dance as far as wins against rpi top 50 and we had some “good losses” uf,gt twice clemson so hopefully les will convince the other members of the selection committee will see that too.
