NC State might be the No. 11 seed in the ACC Tournament programs available at the Greensboro Coliseum, but for the second night in a row the Wolfpack certainly didn’t play the part. One night after upsetting No. 6 seed Clemson, NC State picked up another victory, picking off No. 3 seed Florida State 58-52 and earning a semi-final match up with No. 7 seed Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets knocked off No. 2 seed Maryland in the first game of the evening session, 69-64.

After committing 12 first half turnovers in an ugly first 20 minutes, the Wolfpack went to the locker room down three to the Seminoles, 25-28. In the second half, however, the Wolfpack turned it over just three times and outscored the ‘Noles by nine to pick up the six point victory.

Scott Wood put on a shooting display reminiscent of NC State’s trip to Florida State in January, a game in which Wood scored a career-high 31. On this night against the Noles, Wood poured in 18 points on 6 of 10 shooting. Two straight threes by Wood midway through the second half put NC State up by nine points and set the stage for the closing minutes.

Javi Gonzalez, who hurt his ankle against Clemson and was a game time decision against FSU, led NC State with 13 points, six assists, five rebounds and five steals. Tracy Smith, who suffered a hip injury in Friday night’s game, also finished with 13 points.

Gonzalez made the play of the night with two minutes remaining, stealing an entry pass before he fed Tracy Smith for a dunk which put NC State up 54-48.

Solomon Alabi led FSU with 13 points, nine rebounds and four blocks, but no other player scored in double figures.

Despite suffocating defense from Florida State for much of the night, the Wolfpack still managed to shoot 44 percent from the field and 46 percent from behind the arc, thanks mostly to Wood. State held the Seminoles to 38 percent shooting and Florida State shot just 3 of 18 from behind the arc. Go here for the full box score.

The beauty of all of this – the experience our guys are gaining through this run. Wood, Howell, CJ…even Javi and Tracy. Setting us up for a dangerous team next year.

With real depth in the backcourt, and a very dangerous frontcourt, we could indeed have a special team next year.

I like the combo of a frosh super-point guard and an experienced but not as athletically gifted senior PG. If Wood can keep shooting like he has the last couple of days, and if the other guys can bring it like they have, we’ll be fine.

And a senior Tracy Smith has to be consensus preseason All-ACC with a real shot at All American at the end of the year.

Sid was practicing for the role in “Gone With the Wind” and cut up the drapes from the old Student Union…or so I hear!

alpha, a few of those 7 games were close and winnable? things haven’t just fallen the right way for this team this year. noone will forget the season, but we’d like to enjoy our success right now

^ He can wear a red dress for all I care so long as he and the team keep winning.

Alpha– I have followed your posts for a few years and as always you keep a level head. I respect that. I have followed this team for thirty plus years. I understand the cautious optimism but I have to beleive. With the players coming in and the potential for one more blue chipper we have a great chance to turn the corner. If we lose tomorrow it won’t change how I see this team getting better. I think the last three or four weeks have made a difference.

Enjoy it and don’t think I am not.

Just don’t think that the boys don’t have a lot of work to do to be a consistent ACC top tier team.

Alpha Wolf, we must enjoy the moment or we might as well not enjoy anything. When we make noise lets all make it together. GO PACK!

  8. Alpha Wolf 03/13/2010 at 12:06 AM #

    ^ I can go with that…GO PACK.

And GOWOLVES, you and I agree almost 100%.

I want us to be up there where I think we belong, which is right up there with those guys we’re not supposed to compete with.

I hope that Harrow is seeing this burst of love for our guys.

Can I get an AMEN fellow Pack fans!

Alpha, I’m with you on the cautious approach, but I can’t help but be curious, if not a little excited, about what it will look like to have this frontcourt along with a backcourt that can not just handle, but punish, pressure.

    With or without Leslie/Cothron.

  12. Gowolves 03/13/2010 at 12:09 AM #

Alpha Wolf–Couldn’t agree more. Enjoy the win like I am sure you will. What would you say if we won this thing? We are due to get lucky. I hate saying we have to get lucky but it would drive a lot of good things

Alpha: what would I say if we won this one? Not much because I think I would lose my voice by the end of the game. Let’s just say that I would be just as happy as every one of the older guys who’ve suffered through a lot since the V Scandal. That would be as happy as it gets.

Who’s thinking of heading to Greensboro tomorrow?

If any State team needs our love, it’s this one.

Not been happy with Sid,but gotta pull for my team. So he got us into the ACC tournament semis, can we make it to the championship. Why not?

hopefully we also just stole that last NIT spot that Roy has been politicking for.

The win is so much sweeter with the holes enjoying their early offseason.

  18. Alpha Wolf 03/13/2010 at 12:14 AM #

^ Indeed, why not? Won’t be easy, never is, but this team has that something in their eyes. Never saw a sagging shoulder all night. Never saw anything but unity. These guys look like a 100% together team and that counts for a lot this time of year.

    THIS IS THE HODGE EFFECT!

WE NEEDS MORE HODGE AROUND THIS PROGRAM!

This team has a lot of heart. I don’t feel like they will “look ahead” to the next game. It will come down to playing great defense like they have up til now. If they shoot reasonably well and rebound then they will be in the game. Hit the free throws down the stretch and they will win. A lot of ifs. If a bull frog had wings he wouldn’t bump his ass!
