Carolina’s sad escape

I guess it is just a day for videos.

We opened an entry on the message boards last night after Carolina received multiple gifts from the three blind officials on the floor of Madison Square Garden to allow them to advance to the NIT Championship. I particularly liked Dr. BadgerPack’s comments:

So the NCAA should acknowledge the bad call… I would imagine it would go something like this:

Dear Rhode Island,

Sorry you got screwed out of a win. But, that would have screwed us out of a couple million viewers in the title game. Feel free to lodge a complaint; we’ll address it just as soon as we address Reggie Bush.

Sincerely,
The NCAA

P.S. Don’t write again, unless it’s to report an INSIGNIFICANT school for something we can crucify them for.

Most of the videos are only focusing on the missed foul as Rhode Island was fast breaking towards a win. But, don’t overlook the importance of a bad out of bounds call with about 41 seconds left that gave Carolina the ball with the lead and a new shot clock when Rhode Island should have had possession…or the obvious travel just north of the free throw line with 11 seconds to go that would have turned the ball over to Rhode Island.

Here is a hat tip to SCACCHoops

This was not the first time they were let off the hook. The W&M game, a no-call on a UNC charge (when it was a 3 pt game) followed by an open court arm tap with the W&M player taking a 3 ptr. I hate UNC but if they just beat these teams outright I could stomach it. I just don’t see how the calls at (emphasis on) crucial times, particularly nearing the ends of games, this sh#@ keeps happening to their advantage.

The refs are getting so damned poor at the end of games, maybe they need to add a 4th ref to truly focus on NOTHING but the guy with the ball so when they mysteriously fall down “on their own” it want be such a mystery as to why.

  2. coach13 03/31/2010 at 2:40 PM #

And the ESPN article mentions absolutely nothing on this crap. I hate the media. Their UNC love fest as well as the political front.

  3. StateFans 03/31/2010 at 2:43 PM #

The W&M game is a great observation. The Tribe clearly had things under control when the refs changed the direction of the game in the span of about 30 seconds.

Them sumbitches had one of their worst seasons in recent years, but are still in line to win a Championship, this is why I hate Carolina.

everyone could see this coming from a mile away…how many times have we seen carolina get calls/comeback in the last minute of the game?? still no excuse for RI missing four clutch freethrows down the stretch, LETS GO DAYTON!!

  6. packfan03 03/31/2010 at 4:15 PM #

My entire life, Carolina has gotten the calls down the stretch. I just assumed that the following amendments were in the NCAA rulebook somewhere:

    1. Teams donning light blue colors shall receive no less than 60% of the favorable outcomes in the final 5 minutes of a game.

    2. Teams donning light blue colors shall receive the benefit of the doubt in the final minute of every game.

    3. John Henson can goal tend.

I thought two teams wearing light blue would cause the rule book to implode.

section2chuck said, “Them sumbitches had one of their worst seasons in recent years, but are still in line to win a Championship, this is why I hate Carolina.”

Ditto. Furthermore, the tarhole’s worst season is better than our best since Sid became coach.

“Them sumbitches” always come out smellin’ like a rose no matter what happens.

At least everybody got to see Roy show his aise a time or two this year.

  8. packsbiggestfan 03/31/2010 at 5:16 PM #

lets not forget the possible goal tend by tyler zeller near the end of the game. I was watching the game and was extremely excited to see Drew II the only defender back until the dude got tripped and nothing was called. This is BS and I will do all I can in my professional life to be better than anyone who graduated for UNSUCKASS.

hey, in all fairness, they got by UAB and UAB handed us our a**es

Here’s a fun little tid-bit that will really piss you off. As poor as UNC was this season, UNC was still #3 in the nation in defensive free throw rate. Translation: Teams that play UNC didn’t get to the free throw line very often.

    Source: http://kenpom.com/factors.php?y=2010&t=d&s=9 (sorted by FTA/FGA)

Number friggin 3 out of 347 teams! Unreal. For comparison, NC State was 153. I’d venture to guess we would have won A LOT more games if we were afforded a #3 ranking in this category.

^ That is one reason and one reason only…the name on the jersey.

And it is just the NIT, but what a load of horseshit. If there is justice, Dayton will drill them a new one Thurs. night.

The three blind mice were looking the other way. Must be friends of the legendary ACC official Lenny “Carolina Blue” Wirtz.

ESPN Sports Center had an item today which actually called out the refs that any trip of an offensive player, intentional or not, is a foul and must be called.

URI got hosed a couple of times in last minute. What else is new when playing the Heels.

    I hate those guys.

    Go Dayton

  15. Wolfy__79 03/31/2010 at 10:16 PM #

the no call was so biased that they didn’t call either of the two only options IMO: 1, traveling or 2, foul for tripping. i didn’t watch the game entirely, but i didn’t miss that officiating blunder. i expect unc-ch to get the calls. i think you should distance urself and ri failed to hit crucial freethrows to do so. when they were missing those ft’s, i already knew carolina had gained the upper hand. and they looked just as pitiful as they did all season. kind of like when they were still ranked after losing several games, remember that? honestly, i’m already see them winning the nit, i don’t really see dayton surviving the unc officiating draw. that’s when you want to beat them, you have to beat the crap out of them. don’t leave to much wiggle room for the refs.

  16. blpack 03/31/2010 at 10:54 PM #

It is amazing how adamant the announcers are about the no call. It was so obvious to them and I’m sure most watching. Them’s the breaks and it is unfair, but we’ve seen it for years. Maybe Dayton will beat them tomorrow. They are still not a good team and going from the NCAA to the NIT is an insult when you think about it. If Duke wins it all, watch the bloodshed coming from CH.

  17. ncsukyle 03/31/2010 at 11:54 PM #

it was at least refreshing to hear Bill Raferty and … that other guy, call the game instead of the UNC love fest that is Mike Patrick/Len Elmore. I mean you wouldn’t hear anything about the game going on much less the other team in it if those two are anywhere near the announcer’s table. Here’s to hoping CBS keeps the rights to the NCAA tourney and the ESPN announcers are kept far away from it…even if that means another year of Gus “Byaaaaaaa” Johnson.

  18. EdMar 04/01/2010 at 8:10 AM #

Yes, they get all the breaks, but as much as I hate to say it they stay in games and traditionally good teams get “the breaks”. After watching Harrison Barnes(UNX) and Kyrie Erving(Duke) play in the McDonalds game last night, it is pretty clear we will continue to be irrelevant in the ACC for many more years to come.

  19. Wulfpack 04/01/2010 at 8:24 AM #

^Drew has single-handedly kept UNC alive in 3 NIT games. It was, of course, terrible officiating. But you have to give UNC credit for storming back in these games at critical junctures.

Harrison Barnes is a freak of an athlete AND a basketball player. Irving will be great for Duke. I wasn’t impressed with Bullock or Marshall. CJ Leslie had some good moments, but he appears to be more a finesse player.

  20. BJD95 04/01/2010 at 8:33 AM #

All the UNC fans in my office were quite open about the ridiculous nature of the calls. Apparently each player admitted the calls were blown on their radio broadcast.

Hey, at least give ’em points for honesty, I guess.

  21. wolfpacktexx 04/01/2010 at 3:16 PM #

What was even more predictable was the local coverage of the game yesterday. In both the N&O and the Fayetteville Times the game write up did not mention the controversy and simply labeled the last play that the Rams player tripped and the ball went to Drew II’s hands. After many National Sports Talk shows made fun of the “Will Graves Tackle” on Wednesday the N&O ran an Associated Press article on Page 4 on the “no call”.

  22. mk4dpak 04/01/2010 at 10:21 PM #

Just checked this page, and certainly agree the refs like to help UNX when the game is close. But even the refs couldn’t pull a win out in the championship against Dayton. Go Flyers.

  23. MrPlywood 04/01/2010 at 11:26 PM #

    Go Dayton.

  24. blpack 04/01/2010 at 11:33 PM #

Holes got what they deserved tonight, Dayton 79-68. It may be a long weekend for hole fans.

  25. wolfonthehill 04/02/2010 at 6:29 AM #

The refs most certainly tried last night… there were numerous blatantly wrong block/charge calls that went against Dayton (one was laughably bad… Zeller was almost running sideways to get in the way), phantom calls when uncch went to the bucket, and one non-call travel on Henson where he took four blatant steps… I mean, it was bad in full-speed, absurd in any number of replays where the announcers didn’t say a word. That one, in particular, galled me because it was in the middle of uncch’s second-half run to get back in the game – instead of a turnover, it was an “and-one”. Huge momentum change.

Thankfully, Dayton was a healthy 20 points better than the holes last night, so they could win by ~10. But you just shouldn’t have to be THAT much better than a team to beat them. It’s just wrong…
