The Rick Barnes Saga Continues to be Interesting

As I watched the first half of the Texas/Oklahoma State game tonight, I found myself watching intently and pondering what could have been. Who of us hasn’t over the last few years? What could have been? Or maybe would could still be!!! Many say this is a pipe dream at best, but is it really? Should we find ourselves in the market for a new coach sometime soon, is the prodigal NC son ready to return home?

Most of you know the connection between NC and Barnes. And then there’s infamous standoff with Dean at mid-court during a Clemson/UNC game which enamored Coach Barnes to most of us for eternity. Here’s a guy who is not intimidated by the Carolina “mystique”, he’s from NC and why again is he not our basketball coach?

So why might he leave Texas to come to Raleigh? Curious I just spent took a whirl over at the UT Rivals site. On the front, home page of the site there are literally NO basketball articles or major entries. Not one. It’s entirely football related (spring practice, recruiting, etc) and there’s one baseball entry. Here UT finds itself ranked in the Top 25 (although sitting at the disappointing position of 21 considering early season rankings – oh Lord may we one day have such “problems”), squarely looking at an NCAA Tournament bid in the face (again Lord, please?), and there is not a single entry on the front page of their primary fan site about basketball.

So let’s take the leap to the basketball main page. The top story is a complete slam at Barnes… a portion of which is entitled “The Blame Game” and starts something like: “the Texas meltdown can be blamed squarely on Barnes who hasn’t motivated his team… blah…blah…blah.” In the paragraph prior to that the author admits that Barnes ALWAYS has his team playing hard and rebounding well which keeps the team in almost every game. Again… why is it Lord can we not have such “problems?” You really should take a moment to read this. And they call our fans out of control…

Hell the Rivals site even has a baseball story on the BASKETBALL PAGE!!! While this, hopefully, is just an editor’s error, the irony is not lost me. The next most recent story is a blurb about Texas’ 40-point drubbing of conference foe Nebraska. This story was posted on Valentine’s Day. There’s no love in it much for Barnes, however. If you want to read some quotes from a frustrated coach after a win… read Barnes’ quotes here. He’s clearly perturbed at the heat being placed on him. There’s also an awful lot of talk about rifts within the program. You won’t be sorry for taking a moment to do so. I think if you do, you’ll see some hope for NC State sprinkled in there.

The second half of the Texas/Oklahoma State game has started. I’m going to turn my attention back to game and watch this thing unfold. Another loss could mean Meltdown City in Austin. Please share your thoughts and anything you find on this topic as it’s become very, very, very interesting with Texas admittedly under-achieving this year. Undoubtedly the Longhorn fans and Texas media has already turned on Barnes MUCH quicker than anything that’s ever happened around here.

Quite simply, the guy would be looked at as nothing short of a savior here… a golden god of sorts. There’s good reason to think given a few potential changes that are likely to occur soon along with some influence from some friends of the University, that Barnes could find his way to Raleigh some day. If it’s going to happen, I hope it’s sooner rather than later.

    elvislives – nice.

And the answer to your question is “yes”.

This isn’t relevant to the Rick Barnes post, but I feel compelled to share the link after stumbling on it. Be warned, it is an article dated August 17, 2001 by HWSNBN

don’t really know what to say about that post other than haven’t we moved past anything HWSNBN?

i’m off the sid wagon again. this week has been good for me b/c i’ve had time to remove what little focus i had on this pitiful “season” and think aboot his career in its entirety. its just not good, forget good enough. who wants good enough anyway. he should have had a guard here.. u can’t count on just one per year, lozo would have made a good impact… but he simply should have had one here.

come on rick barnes, i’m good with that. we can provide the atmosphere needed for a top program. hell, look at how we continue to cheer our asses off for a poor team. and that’s considering short-handed attendance. win baby win.

GAWolf, if Barnes had the success here that he’s had at Texas, it would be much more than we’ve had in a long time, that is true. And I’d certainly enjoy it, don’t get me wrong, though I would be disappointed in no conference championships. We had plenty of that with Sendek (who I believe was a good coach, but I thought it was time for him to move on.) I just don’t see him as this great, must have, fans will weep at his arrival type of coach. I believe there are other good coach’s out there, and I might be more inclined to the men’s basketball equiv. of Kellie Harper than someone who may not have too many more years to coach.

“Maybe we could get Jeff Capel if the time were to come.”

I don’t want a Dookie coaching Wolfpack basketball, and what’s he done for Oklahoma lately anyhow? Big name, little results. I think he’s in over his head at OU.

Maybe the Rick Barnes ship already has sailed, as someone posted earlier. But I’d rather be on a ship that’s already sailed rather than on one that’s already sunk.

Why are so many state fans obsessed with Rick Barnes. He has a huge recruitng pool in Texas, with not a whole lot of competition for the recruits. Someone please tell me what has he ever won? How many times did he beat Duke or UNC while at Clemson. He is an average coach at best and we don’t need another average coach at state if Sid doesn’t get past next year. I am really hoping Sid can turn the corner next year with a huge upgrade at the gaurd position. Please everyone get over Rick Barnes, he is not the answer.

ok, i’m back on the wagon! we will win 2 out of 3 to end the season.

Rick Barnes may actually be one of the worst bench coaches (compared to his salary) in recent history.

Granted…he’s better than what we have now but that’s mainly because he actually can recruit and get players to really enroll.

“Michigan Coach – Steve something or other”

You mean the other coach we tried to hire, but declined after Fowler messed up the offer?

  10. Wolfy__79 02/26/2010 at 12:03 AM #

there would be NO point in having beilin when HWSNBN has the exact same crap offense. cmon man. i’m thankful that was botched. how dumb can you be to hire the mirror image loser.

Guys, Texas is a better job than NC State. Sorry. Rick Barnes isn’t leaving an easy winner(ie who recruits vs. Texas in that area Texas Tech, maybe, OK, sure, but Texas is a big state) for NC State where recruiting in state is much more difficult with 3 other top tier in-state programs.

  12. wolfmanmat 02/26/2010 at 7:00 AM #

^Yea, Beilin runs the Princeton offense

  13. GAWolf 02/26/2010 at 7:40 AM #

Beilin is a rich man’s Herb. If there’s ever been a coach with a ceiling it’s the ones that run the weave and heave. We’ve been down that road. Hopefully we’ll never do it again.

The OP was referring to Steve Fisher who coached Michigan to the ’89 Championship and 92&93 finals.

Rick Barnes and NC State continues to be an enigma.

I think his is the perfect fit.

I have come across posters on “The Wolfpacker” site that immediately do NOT want him. They bring up his “alleged” affair with a cheerleader at Clemson as political mud. Other allegations of him bringing in players that are not academically sound(see PJ Tucker).

I am confused why any rational State fan would not want Barnes here.

If Fowler were to leave I am sure that would open things back up.

The other comical story on Barnes I have heard is that Fowler would not allow Rick’s brother to open up a BBQ restaurant in the RBC as part of a contract.

Let’s start at square one and get rid of Fowler.

Anyone that does not think Barnes would be good fit at State is insane!

  16. travelwolf 02/26/2010 at 2:18 PM #

If you look at the recruits… Barnes has had almost UNC and Duke level recruits in recent years – esp. 2006 – see

    http://texas.scout.com/a.z?s=110&p=9&c=8&cfg=bb&yr=2006

I doubt Barnes would come here because then he’d have to recruit against those 2 schools – and if you don’t have recruits, you ain’t gonna win!

  17. VaWolf82 02/26/2010 at 2:34 PM #

Barnes is already recruiting against Duke, UNC, and everyone else in the country for the top players.

  18. BSIE80 02/26/2010 at 3:11 PM #

    Again, Sid is the coach.

    Barnes is a has been.

If Sid did leave, we would recruit someone that is mid conference and young, like the women’s coaching search. Not a has been like Barnes.

You guys are driving me crazy with all this Rick Barnes stuff. First off he WOULD have to recruit against the other top teams in the state for the better in state recruits – All of you would be crying the blues again on this post after four or five years of Rick Barnes not getting us from the bottom of the conference. At some point we really need to let it go. I think we’re cooking up something good here at State with Sid. Yeah I know it doesn’t look too good right now but I just don’t see how another coach could come here and do any better given our recent history. Actually, I think some of you guys posting are really undercover tarholes who’s conspiring to keep us at the bottom. Negative posts seen by potential recruits doesn’t help at all. Now I’m not saying that we shouldn’t express our disappointment but gimme a break some of you that’s all you got. If I were a top D1 recruit and reading this stuff I’d be concerned. It’s like you guys want the coach to fail just to validate your point. A kind of I-told-u-so kind of thing. sheesh I get depressed from some of this stuff. I know it’s more to winning than simply thinking you can win but it really goes a long way. At least it makes the trip to winning shorter.

Last thing – In 1983 I happen to be in Hudson-Belk department store downtown Raleigh one day when I spotted Cozell McQueen walking through the store and he was being followed by several kids that seemed to be giving him grief but I never will forget what I heard him say to them.
He told those kids “we will win the championship”. What a prophet! I, like them thought he was tripping. He simply said it though ‘ we will win the championship” very matter of factly like. I was standing in the men’s shoe department when I heard the conversation. – True story.
Now I really don’t care if any of you believe this account or not it is true. I’d rather believe this program will turn for the better than believe what some of you are saying.

Wow, I can’t wait to read this blog next year when Harrow and Brown and Leslie are lighting the ACC up and Sid is sitting near the top of the pile.

I’ll be coming on here a lot lol
