Different night, same story for NC State.

The Wolfpack hit just one field goal in the final ten minutes against the Terps, allowing Maryland to erase a 10-point halftime deficit and pick up a nine-point win in its third game in five days. The Terps (18-7, 8-3), led by Greivis Vasquez, climbed into second place in the ACC with Wednesday night’s win and pushed NC State even deeper into the bottom of the conference standings.

Vasquez scored 26 points (17 in the second half) and dished out six assists while freshman Jordan Williams tallied 19 points and 11 boards. Dennis Horner led NC State (14-13, 2-10) with 19 points and ten boards, but only one other player, Tracy Smith, scored in double figures for the Pack.

“Like him or not, he’s a tough guy. He’s tough mentally and he just took the team right on his back and led them in there,” Sidney Lowe said of Vasquez. “That’s what good players do. I think we have a guy that can lead from a scoring standpoint but I don’t think we have anyone on the perimeter or anywhere else that will lead.”

Freshman forward Scott Wood, who scored nine points in 26 minutes, summed up NC State’s loss simply.

“Bad shots, turnovers, no defense, no energy, you want anymore? Just a lack of execution, coaches can’t do it for us,” he said. “They give us all the right stuff and it seems like we don’t want to do it.”

Maryland’s 22-5 run to end the game completely erased any hope for an NC State victory even after the Wolfpack played well enough to take a 10-point lead into halftime. NC State played as well as it had since the victory over Duke Jan. 20 before faltering in the second half. Lowe said he was pleased with the effort in the first 20 minutes but completely confused by the team he saw during the second 20 minutes.

“Two totally different halves. I thought we played real well both offensively and defensively. I thought we were very aggressive, I thought we executed offensively the way we wanted to and in the second half we came out and turned it over the first time we had the ball,” he said. “We got away from what we did in the first half. As a result we didn’t shoot well in the second half.”

Wood said it’s frustrating to go through stretches like the last 10 minutes of the second half, especially after playing so well for a good part of the night. NC State scored just 21 points in the second half after putting up 37 before the break.

“I don’t want to say it’s a mental block but it’s definitely in your brain and it’s frustrating when you play that well in the first half and you  play well in halves and you play well in spurts and you just can’t put it together for 40 minutes,” he said. “We’re just going to have to keep working. Every fan in the stands saw what we can do in the first half so if we could just put it together we’ll be fine.”

Lowe also commented on the potential of the team but said it’s frustrating to repeatedly see the same types of problems keep NC State from winning games.

“I’m not sure where their pulse is. I know they were disappointed in there, one guy looked like he was going to cry, a lot of guys with their heads down but you know the question is what are you going to do about it? That’s the question,” he said. “I’m frustrated because I’m trying to teach something. it’s not just about playing the game, it’s about how you play the game. To go over time and time and time again and talk about how you ply the game the right way, and making the right decisions and making the right plays. To do it in one half and not do it in the other is frustrating.”

Gary Williams owns Sidney Lowe. Yea, he’s had better teams than us. But he’s putting a pretty good whipping on Sid and Co. It’s no longer just a coincidence that we’re losíng to Maryland, often by a wide margin. That was a game we should have won. But we didn’t.

  2. GAWolf 02/18/2010 at 9:00 AM #

Right or wrong, did they even attempt to give ANY answer?

Seriously… did we call a timeout in the second half? Anyone know?

  3. rtpack24 02/18/2010 at 9:06 AM #

Once again Sid puts it on the players. Just once I wish he would man up and take responsibilty. It is the head coach’s job to have his team ready to play with a game plan. I like how down the stretch even though it was the 27th game of the year, we were trying to figure out a player rotation subing 3 players at a time every 2 minutes.

  4. ncsufan13 02/18/2010 at 9:07 AM #

GAWolf, we took 3 timeouts in the second half.

The first at 11:11 when the score was 46-45. Following that Horner scored 5 quick points but Maryland quickly called a timeout of their own and answered with an 8 point run.

The second at 08:16 when the score was 51-53 which was followed by an almost 5 minute long scoring drought.

The final one was at 01:02 when the score was 58-65. We didn’t score any more points after that one.

Looked to me like State got LOTS of good shots in the 2nd half, just missed almost all of them. I like when the Pack gets up and down the floor, especially when the other team packs it in and smothers Smith. The halfcourt offense wasn’t producing good shots at all, but the run and gun game was. But it was a close miss on a good jumper every time. I put the half court blame on simply not having a quick pg who can break read and break down a defense. Mays isn’t quick, Javi doesn’t have good court vision or a very good handle, and Degand works way better in a full court sprint. I didn’t see any huge sin except for missing shots that weren’t that difficult. And I thought they tried hard, even in the 2nd half. Unfortunately State doesn’t have a 1 or 2 who can take over the game while UM does. Maybe some day State will.

13 beat me too it. Not hard to verify in the box score. 11:11 46/45; 8:16 51/53; 1:02 too late.

This team absolutely melted under a stiffening defense. What blows my mind is how all of a sudden ALL teh shots are SHORT. Even when Tracy finnally got the ball down low he jumped straight up and didn’t get teh ball over the rim. Unbelievable.

What I saw at the game last night…

Fan attendance was probably 60-65% lower level mid court, same upper level mid court, less than 10% everywhere else. The crowd was lothargis all night, but I guess it’s like watching a remake of Titanic at this point, you know how its gonna end and its not gonna be pretty. Recognizing LCharles and DThompson was kindof nice but then you grind your teeth thinking”and now look at us”. THE Loudest the crowd got was for the BassPackers. Thought that was classy. Sincerely, Good job boys.

Back to the game, I don’t like Lowe as a coach but last night that team just quit. They had it and quit. Don’t get me wrong, they are not talented. They miss open shots all night, but they hustled and got second chance and easy baskets first half and frustrated Md all first half. There was no major change in Md’s game second half. The big change was us. We simply did not hustle, scrap, they laid down very gently.

Officiating…I can’t be too critical as I was up high, but from my angle, we really do get hacked at home alot…reach ins, bumps, and muggings when we try to force it on the inside. If such a thing as home court calls exist, it does not exist at the RBC.

    Players:

Smith is good, but he sure does play week sometimes (or often). He cannot overpower people. He may can outquick them, but he gets shoved around….alot.

Nice to see Big V on the floor. I thought he had a good outting. The stats will not show it but he does alter shots in there big time. He too is week though. I started to type “I’m not sure why he does not post up more often” but then I saw him get pushed around some too. I thought He had one REALLY GREAT MOMOENT I WANTED TO SEE MORE PLAYERS DO!!! He was irritated. He got the ball in the post and he turned and BULLED…and I MEAN BULLED over the guy that was on his back. Literally knocked him back. I was like HELL YES! Why can’t Smith do more of that! Then he followed it by tossing the ball almost a ball length past the rim after such a nice power move. BUT HE WILL GET THERE LOVED THAT.

I am really starting to dislike Javi. Since the luck ass shot in the Duke game, he will not pass the ball with under 10 seconds on the shot clock. He wants to make himself “the man” with time running down. And then he throws up pure Sh@#!

Finally (long post), can anyone tell me what is wrong with Johnny Thomas? He looks great, very athletic warming up. But he never sees the floor…yet CJ still gets way too many minutes, and he sucks. Is Thomas bad, no D, what? Anyone with insight on Thomas?

  8. coach13 02/18/2010 at 9:24 AM #

Oh…and I should give one of my least favorite players some props. Very nice job Horner. You played like a Senior last night. I know you may completely disappear next game, but last night you gave it all. Just no help for you 2nd half.

  9. packfan03 02/18/2010 at 9:28 AM #

    BassPacker,

Just to clarify, my sarcasm wasn’t intended towards the Bass Fishers, it was directed towards Fowler. I was at the game those in attendance did give the Bass Fishers an ovation.

It’s just pathetic that we can’t compete in baseball, basketball, or football. I’m happy for the guys, and you could certainly tell their enthusiasm was genuine. I hope to see a repeat!

  10. coach13 02/18/2010 at 9:29 AM #

I really hope those Freshmen start next year…with very limited play (spells) from Javi and Mays.

I wonder if coaches ever approach their players about transferring? for their own interest? to smaller programs/conferences where they can play at their level?

  11. packfan03 02/18/2010 at 9:34 AM #

I agree. Interestingly enough, the officiating was most horrendous in the half that we seemed to outplay Maryland.

I can’t remember the exact play, but early in the first half (I want to say Farnold) we drove to the basket, were body bumped – no call. The very next possession for Maryland, the exact same thing occurs, except we bump them – foul called.

Another thing that annoyed me: Did anyone notice the pregame chatter between Grievis and the Officials? THEY went over to HIM and started joking around and having a conversation. This didn’t happen just once either. Is this normal? I thought it lacked professionalism by the zebras.

  12. Prowling Woofie 02/18/2010 at 9:38 AM #

    ^ coach13, that would result in a 5-man roster next year…

    Smith, Howell, Wood, Harrow, Brown…

  13. GAWolf 02/18/2010 at 9:56 AM #

If Javi or Mays start next year Sid is G-O-N-E. Mark it down. That means Harrow isn’t as billed and we’re doomed at least in the immediate.

NCSU13: Thanks for that. I guess I had already given up and spent most of the time talking rather than paying attention. The last two are explainable since nothing good happened after them… The first one I should have remembered sounds like.

A few key moments from the 2nd half:

    14:51 – State goes up 10 at 46-36
9:52 – Horner hits a three to go up 51-45
(That’s five points in five minutes)

3:48 – Horner hits two FTs to make the score 53-58, UMD leading
(That’s zero points in six minutes; 5 pts in 11 minutes)

This should help put the TOs into the context of the game.

To satisfy my own curiosity, I dug into the coaching records for every coach to be hired in the ACC since 1980. Here’s how their first four years stack up (records through 2/17/10 for Gaudio and Lowe):

    Roy Williams (UNC) 45-19, .703
Skip Prosser (Wake Forest) 44-20, .688
    Bill Guthridge (UNC) 32-16, .667
Dino Gaudio (Wake Forest) 26-18, .591
    Jeff Jones (Virginia) 31-31, .500
Paul Hewitt (Ga Tech) 31-33, .484
    Matt Doherty (UNC) 23-25, .479
Dave Odom (Wake Forest) 28-32, .467
    Pete Gillen (Virginia) 29-35, .453
    Rick Barnes (Clemson) 28-36, .438
    Dave Leitao (Virginia) 27-37, .422
Jim Valvano (NC State) 23-33, .411
    Frank Haith (Miami) 26-38, .406
    Cliff Ellis (Clemson)22-34, .393
Bobby Cremins (Ga Tech) 22-34, .393
Leonard Hamilton (Florida State) 23-41, .359
    Mike Krzyzewski (Duke) 20-36 0.357
    Oliver Purnell (Clemson) 22-42, .344
Les Robinson (NC State) 21-41, .339
Steve Robinson (Florida State) 21-43, .328
Herb Sendek (NC State) 21-43, .328
    Gary Williams (Maryland) 18-42, .300
Sidney Lowe (NC State) 17-43, .283
    Larry Shyatt (Clemson) 15-49, .234
    Bob Wade (Maryland) 7-35, .167
Bob Staak (Wake Forest) 8-48, .143

So Sidney Lowe isn’t just worse than Les Robinson and Herb Sendek. He’s produced a worse record in his first four years than every ACC coach except Larry Shyatt, Bob Wade, and Bob Staak, three of the worst coaches in college basketball history.

Yeah, I expect a huge turnaround next year. I’m already putting in for my vacation time for the 2011 Final Four.

I too, was not trying to disparage the bass fishing team. Great accomplishments should be applauded. It is just that it is about the only athletic accomplishment we currently have to applaud. Our most visible sports are not praiseworthy right now.

What happened to love fest over Javy at the beginning of the season? Same folks that took 4 years to figure out Lowe sucks took 3 to figure out Javy sucks. At least they are improving.

  18. newt 02/18/2010 at 10:22 AM #

We are not a great team because we lack talent, especially at the guard position.

We are the worst team in the conference because we’ve lost all confidence, especially at the guard position. All you have to do now to beat State is take Tracy away and let our guards try to beat you. They won’t. It takes confidence to make shots. That’s a tough thing to coach, but a lot of that factor has to be on Coach Lowe, just like the lack of effort (except against us and Duke) is on Roy Williams at UNC.

The turning point between a decent season and last place was probably as early as the first loss to UVA, coming on the heels of two tough last-second losses to Arizona and Florida. Beating Duke was a matter of one step up, two steps back. By the time we lost to UVA the second time the snowball was rolling uncontrollably downhill.

Big picture, I look at this team and see the problem as insufficient guard play. I love Javi and the other guys, but at best they aren’t getting it done and at worst they make decisions that hurt the team’s chances to win – decisions contrary to what they are being taught and told. How we got here is a whole other topic, but I look at Lorenzo Brown and Ryan Harrow and see a potential solution to our problems. That’s where I’m at.

    Rochaester,
What does it say about NCSU that we have 3 of the bottom eight.

  20. Rochester 02/18/2010 at 10:26 AM #

Says we haven’t had very high standards. Here’s hoping the new chancellor sets the bar a little higher.

This game was over when Vasquez hit the 3 as the shot clock expired… to cut our lead to 10. As strange as it sounds, our guys looked defeated at that moment, and we never had a chance from there.

Sorry, coach – it’s your job to keep guys from giving up. You’re admitting you can’t do that. Time to move on…

  23. Howler1 02/18/2010 at 10:36 AM #

Sorry to inform everyone, but, the state of Wolfpack basketball is in a freefall and has been set back 10 years. The 2 main reasons are 1. Lee Fowler and 2. Sidney Lowe. Both have to be gone before things can get better.
The reason the basketball team has problems is the fact that they are out of shape, lack discipline, have no idea what defense is all about, and what to do in critical situations during games. The only thing Sidney Lowe knew about college basketball when he became coach was the ball is still round and the baskets are 10′ high. I know for a fact the team does no skill sessions, conditioning drills, or pratice real game situations for last minute play.
All fans that wanted Herb Sendek gone should be careful what they wished for because look what you got.
I can tell you with confidence that if Herb were still here, the Pack would be ACC champs, esp. this year.
All the complaining in the world won’t change things at NC State until Lee Fowler is gone and a reliable and accountable AD is in place. When Lee leaves, Sidney should be right behind carrying his baggage.
What an utter disaster NCSU basketball has become and will continue to be under Sidney Lowe. He has never been a winner as a coach at any level.

  24. JEOH2 02/18/2010 at 10:41 AM #

Rochester, while interesting, the problem w/ statistics are that they can be construed to any arguement and the circumtances behind each situation is unique

    Example, on your overall point:

Supporters (Lowe’s record is horrible and unlikely he’ll improve):
    – Horrible ACC Winning Percentage; No Where Close to .500
    – Among Some of The Worst Coaches of All Time; Programs improved greatly after they were gone

Detractors (1st four years are arbitrary & could improve):
    – Paul Hewitt is 6th Best in Winning Percentage, Doherty is 7th
    – The Guy Who Has a .17 Higher Winning Percentage Then Lowe, Won a National Championship & is an Icon at His University

Lowe’s numbers are very clear that he has one of the worst winning percentages of a coach tenured this long…but the overall interpretation of the numbers is all relative and is less informative, then it is interesting to look upon…Though as Rick said, it says alot that we have three of the bottom eight on the list…which to me says more about NC State then anything else…

  25. Rick 02/18/2010 at 11:06 AM #

” I know for a fact the team does no skill sessions, conditioning drills, or pratice real game situations for last minute play.”

    Two questions
    1) Not doubting you but was wondering how you know this
    2) Then what do they do in practice?
