Preview: NC State vs Maryland

NC State returns to the RBC Center tonight after traveling to Chapel Hill over the weekend to take on Maryland. The Terps are coming off a 19-point victory over Virginia Monday night and will look to continue the solid play which has them sitting in third place in the ACC.

The Wolfpack, losers of six straight conference games, will be looking to right the ship which has seemed take on more and more water in recent days. A win over Maryland certainly wouldn’t make all those problems go away, but it would be a nice reprieve for the Pack.

As is usually the case when a team takes on Maryland, the Pack will have to try and shut down senior point guard Greivis Vasquez first. That’s been easier said than done for the Pack and most everyone else in the ACC. In the first meeting Jan. 23, Vasquez scored 19 and dished out 5 assists. The last time the Terps visited the RBC Center, March 1, 2009, Vasquez poured in 33 points.

During his time in College Park, Vasquez has always seemed to play well against the Pack. In only six career meetings with the Pack, Vasquez averages 17 points and more than seven assists a contest. His career averages are great (15.5 and 5.6) but he still seems to have NC State’s number.

Check out the Maryland perspective on Testudo Times.

On a side note, there will be a live blog tonight from the RBC Center. This edition will be a little different, however, as SFN has contacted YANCSSB and Backing the Pack to put together a three-headed monster live blog. During the game all three sites will be contributing to the commentary and hosting the same chat on each individual site. We’re going to start the chat a little earlier as well, sometime around 8:30 p.m. If you have pre-game questions or topics you would like to discuss we’ll do that then.

Here’s some of the game notes.

Game Notes

This season has already gone around the bowl and down the hole.

“I would love to see a nice flagrant foul, not a career ending one but one that says”get that s#%& outta here” and makes him hesitate when he even catches a pass.”

That’s what a real team would do to send a message to Vasquez.

Anyone remember when Duke played Wake @ Cameron on Senior Day and how they treated Chris Paul? That’s how it’s done baby!

  3. blackdom 02/17/2010 at 12:25 PM #

Dogbreath^ One of the great things about living in the city is we don’t get most of the games on tv up here.

  4. Avid109 02/17/2010 at 12:39 PM #

Gee, I’m sure everyone will be watching this game. Maybe we’ll get to see Vasquez do the Macarena Dance as the game winds down….

  5. Prowling Woofie 02/17/2010 at 12:56 PM #

Heard the announcers of the Duke-MD game say that Vasquez loved playing at Cameron because the Crazies came up with taunts in Spanish for him.

If that’s the case, I could certainly come up with one or two that would get his attention !!!!

Maybe we could enlist Steve Hodge for the night ??? He didn’t get to get his licks in on Chris Paul… plus, I’d hate to waste Irving’s eligibility on a punk like Greasy Vaseline !

Primacy have fun, I’m from Harnett Co and good to hear the Camels doing well.

I’m actually hoping Javi gives him a big screw off in his best Puerto Rican mix of Spanish/English and then slaps him harder than he did Paulus…..this time in the face of course.

  7. rky 02/17/2010 at 1:49 PM #

I will not be watching this evening. But I will tune in to the interwebs tomorrow to read the latest and greatest from any recruits that would like to share their thoughts. That would be more interesting, right?!?

  8. Ed89 02/17/2010 at 2:04 PM #

I must laugh at the posters (fans) on this site that continually say “They won’t watch” and offer some smart comment. I know SFN, doesn’t like anyone to “judge” a “fan,” but those comments just reek of a fairweather fan. I mean I understand we’re all disappointed, but if you can’t be an athlete, at least be an athletic supporter (I love that line). But seriously IMO, a supporter would still watch.

I, unfortunately, bought my son tickets for Christms a while back and have to take him tonight. I dread going.

Pack 81, sometimes when you flush it doesn’t all go down, especially with eco friendly toilets and sometimes something gets hiccuped back up. The acc is the eco friendly toilet and we my friend are a double flusher.

As a true fan it hurts to watch us take a ass whoopping. I have to turn away. Seriously, we should play all the freshman we can. Play for next year.

    STARTERS
    Smith
    Howell
    Davis
    Wood
    Either Javi or Mays

    Bring in
Painter and Vanilla Thunder from Down Under and CJ

If a man is hot keep him in until he asks to go out or gets in foul trouble.

The rest of the crew can sit and you know who you are

  12. fullmoon1 02/17/2010 at 2:28 PM #

Strangely enough I prefer to listen to the game. I miss being able to listen to the radio feed while watching simultaneously on tv but the delay makes it irritating. I developed a disdain for tv announcers many years ago. They seldom have anything positive to say or intelligent. But if they start getting blown out I will listen to ice dancing lol.

  13. choppack1 02/17/2010 at 2:35 PM #

Ed – I’ll watch – but I’m not excited about watching. I have tomorrow off, so I’ll walk down to the local pub and watch for the comic value.

  14. wufpup76 02/17/2010 at 2:52 PM #

I’m going to the game tonight for some reason …

At the very least, please, please, please someone thump that b*tch hard tonight. Javi, show him some of your boxing skills – or something. Anything. Anyone.

Of course, we probably don’t care – as usual. And, as usual, I’ll be walking back to my car after another 15 point beatdown by (insert team name here).

Just once it’d be nice to see our players let it all hang loose. Like they’re tired of being frustrated and tired of losing. Forget the outcome, just let it all out – give sh*t back to those who dish it and HAVE SOME FREAKING FUN for a change. I swear, it still seems like HWSNBN is here sometimes. I can’t remember the last time I saw the entire team in it, pulling for each other and having a good time FOR AN ENTIRE SEASON. I had hopes for this team early in the season, but as usual the wheels fell off and everyone is just going through the motions. Wonder why?

    Passion … catch it!

Sidney, just let the players play for a night instead of trying to micromanage EVERY little thing they’re doing on the court. What you’re doing isn’t working right now, obviously – so why not a new tact for tonight? Turn them loose … What? We’re worried we might lose AGAIN!!! Oh no!!! Perish the thought of that.

I know I’m speaking like I know better or something (which I don’t) – but really, this sh*t is really hard to sit through. Over and over and over. At the very least, someone put a “Buddy Ryan” contract on Vasquez (only half joking – it would be something to look for at least).

Sigh, this is only selfish despair from a lonely fan … tear.

Maybe Big V will finally see the court again tonight … that will be something I can look for. I’m sure I’ll be tired of looking at the score soon enough. Woe is me.

Prowling Woofie-I just learned two Spanish terms for douchebag. The first one is “Nabo”(Argentina). The second on is “gilipollas”(spain). Both easily can be worked into chants. I think we can piss of Senior Nabo or maybe simply “El Nabo”.

  16. Prowling Woofie 02/17/2010 at 3:08 PM #

    fullmoon1 – Hahaha, that’s a GREAT start !!!

Although, I have heard that in Argentinian slang, nabo is either 1) idiot or 2) penis.

    Either one suits…

  17. burnbarn 02/17/2010 at 3:17 PM #

Will a Venezelian understand Argentinian slang?

  18. NJpack 02/17/2010 at 3:19 PM #

I predict these post game comments from Coach Lowe after a 20 point loss:

    “We didn’t execute our offense”

“We came out flat in the 2nd half”

“We just need to hit our shots”

  19. whope90 02/17/2010 at 3:23 PM #

Yes, tonight is going to get ugly and ugly and ugly!! And then come thursday,Another quote form Ryan Harrow,”It ain’t Coach Lowe’s fault, they aren’t trying!!

    Good grief!!!!

  20. Prowling Woofie 02/17/2010 at 3:38 PM #

If Sid were to employ a junk D on Vasquez, like a box and 1, who do we have on our roster that is 1) good enough, and 2) experienced enough to stay on him ?

I think he takes Degand to the hole, and I don’t think Davis or Wood is experienced enough to stay with him through all the motion and screens and curls.

CJ ? Needs to be tough and agressive, and that’s not CJ…

He’s a tough matchup for our roster.

  21. Hrryhood 02/17/2010 at 3:38 PM #

I’m pretty sure that the Flying Tomato in the pipe this evening will be MUCH more entertaining and less torturous than the game tonight.

    Go Team USA!!

  22. Rochester 02/17/2010 at 3:39 PM #

When I hear Lowe complaining about the guys not making any shots, etc., I just want to say, “Sid, stop whining and start winning.”

  23. whope90 02/17/2010 at 3:43 PM #

Thanks for the link to the Maryland terp page!! Interesting stuff!!
Man, they have such pity for us it is funny!! We can’t shoot, play defense and they doubt that our players are ACC level and Javi G and Dennis H are terrible!! If i was a state playet, that would motivate me to kick their tail!! But with EL Sid at the helm, if the guys played hard, he probably yell at them or whistle(does he really still do that??/ever heard of timeouts??)

Then maybe maryland is right! Sorry coach with some sorry players?
I believe the coach is sorry and his band of misfit assistants(would any team have monte towe as an assistant?(he could not go back to NO).

But the young guns:Wood,Smith,Vberg,Howell can play along with Degand and sometimes Javi, but horner should have never been a starter!

Heck, i hope they let Painter in and just slam Vasquez that sorry taco eater!!! Squash him like that taco bell dog that he is!!!
Imagine when he plays against Lebron James and shimmeys!! He will get his tail kicked.
That is what this team needs some fire!!Fire the coaches fire the ad
    and knock the fire out of that taco eating guard from md name vasquez;
remember that name,he may be stealing hubcaps soon!!

  24. whope90 02/17/2010 at 4:00 PM #

    Since we all hate Vasquez,
How about a list of all-time hated players in the ACC?
    I will start:

    CLEMSON: Murray Juarman

    VTECH: SETH GREENBURG”ENOUGH SAID’

    From the Testudo Times :

“I’m trying to temper my expectations here, but it’s tough to do so when you see a team struggling as bad as N.C. State is and you’ve already beaten them. We’ve seen the difference between home and away, and that may factor in – especially with the fans as rabid as they could be for Vaz’s blood – but N.C. State is the worst team in the ACC right now, bar none. Unless they come out, vacuum the glass, suddenly start hitting shots, and don’t turn the ball over and Tracy Smith has an awesome game, I have trouble believing Maryland would lose this one.”

How bad does it have to get before Fowler is canned ???
