After finding multiple ways to lose leads and playing inconsistent basketball for much of the last month, NC State finally finished a game against Wake Forest Saturday, picking up a 14-point victory after dropping seven straight conference games.

NC State forced 23 Wake Forest turnovers (15 in the first half) and held down Ish Smith, forcing the senior guard to commit five turnovers and holding him to 12 points. Al-Farouq Aminu and Chas McFarland committed six turnovers each. The Wolfpack was able to score 18 points off those 23 turnovers.

“I congratulate NC State,” Wake Forest coach Dino Gaudio said. “I thought they played very well. They came out and set a certain tone and we didn’t adjust. Our offense put way too much pressure on our defense today. We held them to 40% but we had 15 turnovers in one half.”

Sidney Lowe said NC State’s transition defense, which only allowed eight fast break points, was key to shutting down the Wake Forest offense.

“If you allow them to run on you, they’re going to beat you. Their bigs run the floor very well. You have to stop the transition offense and we did a good job of that. We had deflections and were diving for the ball. As far as that aspect it’s probably the best defensive game we’ve played. Our kids were committed and it showed.”

Five players scored in double figures and the Wolfpack went 6 of 12 from behind the arc after struggling to make shots during the last seven games. CJ Williams came off the bench and poured in 12 points, hitting two three-pointers in a tw0-minute stretch to keep NC State’s lead above 10 points.

Williams, who has struggled throughout the year, said he’s continued to work hard.

“All week in practice I’ve been working on my shot and working on getting my confidence back and I was able to continue to shoot the ball,” Williams said. “Coach had confidence in me and I know if he has confidence in me I have to have confidence in myself.”

Lowe also credited Williams, among others, for being more verbal on the court and in the locker room, something he said helped NC State to reverting to the bad habits its developed during its losing streak.

“We were more energetic coming out,” Williams said. “Sometimes we were a little dead coming out of halftime. Guys were talking in the locker room and it kept us all focused on what we wanted to do. We all just stayed positive.”

Wake Forest shot 0 for 12 from behind the arc, something that hadn’t happened for the Deacons in 575 games. The last time an NC State opponent didn’t make a three-pointer was in 1990, when Maryland failed to do so.

Dennis Horner picked up his third double-double in the last four ball games, scoring 10 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Horner, who had never recorded a double-double before the Virginia Tech game Feb. 10.

Despite Horner’s performance on the glass, Wake Forest out-rebounded NC State 50-31 and pulled down 27 offensive boards (8 by Aminu). However, the Deacons could only manage 19 second chance points on those opportunities.

“They got on me about rebounding, because I’m not going to lie, I wasn’t rebounding,” Horner said. “They sat me down and talked to me about it, I took it to heart and I wasn’t going to let that stop me from playing so I’m coming out here tonight and trying to get as many rebounds as I can. ”

Tracy Smith led NC State with 14 points. Javi Gonzalez scored 11 points and dished out six assists while only turning the ball over twice. The Wolfpack had 15 turnovers but Wake Forest was only able to manage seven points off those miscues.

Senior guard Farnold Degand (13 points) said the win couldn’t have come at a better time for a team which had found so many ways to lose games during the last month.

“We’re more relieved than anything,” he said. “The last couple weeks we’ve been fighting and come out short on a few games. To pull it out today felt great.”

…one other thing i’m looking forward to two years down the road is the vandenburg-uchebo pairing. if howell is still around, the size we can have on the floor will be very tough to handle. ntm having lorenzo and harrow in the backcourt. throw in a couple of splash three’s from mr wood. WOW. you know, it could be really nice in a year or two!

  2. coachkoh 02/23/2010 at 7:32 AM #

Wolfy_79 You do not want this NCState team in the nit? Well neither does the nit ,you say we are better off not being in the nit? So you beleive instead of being close to getting into the nit it is better we are 3-10 and nowhere near getting a bid?
“It could be really nice in a year or two!” If Sid and Fowler remain things will be the same the next few years.

  3. TOB4PREZ 02/23/2010 at 8:00 AM #

coachkoh- were we to believe that “things will be the same the next few years” when Herb had led the Pack to their FIFTH CONSECUTIVE LOSING season????
WOW, if we had fired him then we would NOT have had FIVE CONSECUTIVE trips to the big dance…. I’m actually starting to believe Lee and that “lunatic fringe” talk….. some of you all are out of your minds.
Sid WILL right this ship with the help of Harrow and Brown JUST LIKE Herb righted it with Julius.
SIT DOWN and RELAX!!! we’ve waited 20 years…. what in the hell is ONE MORE gonna hurt????

  4. TOB4PREZ 02/23/2010 at 8:18 AM #

I’ve said it before…. (so I’ll say it again for the “fringies”)… IF Sid and Co. do not finish above .500 next year in league play and make the dance, then I’m all for showing Sidney the door. But, to think for a second it would be anything less than the death of our program for the foreseeable future to get rid of him sooner… is beyond foolish.
I tend to enjoy NOT being “foolish”. Maybe it’s just me.

  5. VaWolf82 02/23/2010 at 8:38 AM #

to get rid of him sooner…is beyond foolish.

That’s only your opinion and it should be obvious that not everyone shares it. Stating your opinion (with support) is why we allow comments here. Stating your opinion as fact with no supporting evidence doesn’t change anyone’s mind.

  6. Wolfy__79 02/23/2010 at 9:15 AM #

no i don’t want this team to get a bid to postseason play, i want them to earn it. it is still very possible. but i think if they luck up and are given a bid, nothing will be gained. this team is capable of winning 1-2-3 of the last season contests. IMO, to date we are not eligible for the NIT any other tourney! sure i would like the team to go and win.

it remains to be seen whether or not sid can do any better. b/c of who he is, he deserves to finish his contract. i’m not fighting for an extension, just stating that there is nothing wrong with him finishing his contract. ^^, there can be no further damage with sid at the helm one more year. it’s not a contract extension but the final year of his current contract.

  7. Wolfy__79 02/23/2010 at 9:21 AM #

i think everyone thinks that w/out a new AD, we don’t want a coaching search, correct? Sid can finish his contract, if we give smoketek 10 years, why not a 5th for Sid!

  8. TOB4PREZ 02/23/2010 at 9:29 AM #

“but i think if they luck up and are given a bid, nothing will be gained”
    —————————————————-
sure it will…. they’ll get MORE practice time and some more competitve games…. that can’t hurt anyone that’s coming back next year. it’s just like going to a lower tier bowl…. it beats the crap out of staying at home and NOT being allowed to practice.
Having said that, I think our chances are still slim that we can get it done (earn a birth), but a coach of our’s back in the day left us with some sound advice relative to struggles…. DON’T EVER GIVE UP!

    TOB4PREZ,

Whoa there buddy. I don’t think anyone’s suggesting our incoming class is anything less than stellar. But, it’s not unfair to criticize Lowe for his record up to this point. We all want our team to succeed – but opinions vary as to how we will achieve this success.

With that said, his record after four years certainly doesn’t prove he’s a good coach (I’m not sure it proves he isn’t either). Your comment about Hodge saving Sendek is right, but five years from now, the same thing could be said regarding Harrow/Brown/Leslie(I hope)/Cothron saving Coach Lowe. I am a Lowe supporter, and do think he’ll turn things around with the help of his recruits. Hopefully, in a few years we’ll look back and see that Lowe was not only able to land one terrific class, but several in a row.

But right now, our program is in a capricious state.

  10. VaWolf82 02/23/2010 at 10:26 AM #

    you want some FACTS????
We have our best recruiting class coming in that we’ve seen in 20 years- FACT! (tell me a better one oh wise one)

I always enjoy facts, but obviously you have very few and can’t carry on a conversation without personal attacks.

The Hodge class was ranked fifth in the nation and I’m pretty sure was tops in the conference…both of which are better than State’s next class.

  11. VaWolf82 02/23/2010 at 11:18 AM #

My memory turned out to be only partially correct on the Hodge class. I saved an article from Thad Mumau from the defunct acctoday.com because it showed that Doherty’s troubles didn’t come from Gut’s recruiting classes. (A fact that I used several times during the Doh years.)

Here is his ranking of the 2001 recruiting classes:

    2001

    2. NORTH CAROLINA — Jawad Williams (11), Melvin Scott (25), Jackie Manuel (30).

    5. N.C. STATE — Julius Hodge (9), Levi Watkins (46), Josh Powell (70), Jordan Collins (122), Ilian Evtimov (261).

    8. GEORGIA TECH — Ed Nelson (21), Isma’il Muhammad (45), Barry Elder (78), Anthony Vasser (87).

    21. FLORIDA STATE — Anthony Richardson (27), Trevor Harvey (top 50 juco), Adam Waleskowski (83), Adrian McPherson, 98, football).

    27. VIRGINIA — Elton Brown (50), Jason Clark (79), Jermaine Harper (115), Keith Jenifer (121), transfer Todd Billet, transfer Nick Vander Laan.

    32. WAKE FOREST — Jamal Levy (47), Vytas Danelius (66), Taron Downey (159).

    35. CLEMSON — Chey Christie (39), Sharrod Ford (107), Steve Allen (206), Jemere Hendrix (209), Olu Babalola (219).

HB DUKE — Daniel Ewing (31).

HB MARYLAND — Andre Collins (148), Ryan Randle (top 50 juco).

Wolfy_79 says “there can be no further damage with sid at the helm one more year. it’s not a contract extension but the final year of his current contract.” I would disagree.

Fact: If we continue to lose support among our fan base, along with the corresponding financial support of the program, it can get much worse.
Opinion: The media has been taking it pretty easy on us up til now. If we revert to our usual quality of play from now through the tournament you can expect a whole lot of negative PR. They have to find something to fill up the dead space and we’re a ready made whipping boy. If the new AD was in place, I’d say pull the plug now for sure based on the W-L record and program stewardship over the last four years. If I’m the new Chancellor, I’d probably be on the phone to my new AD in waiting telling him, when you show up, you better have a new men’s BB coach with you. Coach changes happen in mid season as well as during the summer, while not ideal, I think the positives of a regime change in June outweigh the negatives. I was solidly behind Sid up until half way through this season. I just don’t think the results justify him keeping his job.

  13. Wolfy__79 02/23/2010 at 12:35 PM #

my feeling is that there’s a 99.9% sid will have his final year regardless of how we finish. there will be plenty of writeups about NCSU, especially with unx being down near the bottom. ignore the media, the media coverage will only be local, we have lost national recognition. one more year won’t change anything in a bad way. only good can come. the instate potential recruits, well, they know the entire story or lack thereof.

it’s damn near impossible to compare rectuiting classes considering there are different coaching staffs in place and one hasn’t even stepped foot on campus. i’m okay with a coaching change if necessary, but ther damn well better be a plan intact. i think there are benefits of keeping sid, losing fowler and adding woodson. one year is all i’m talking about. granted, the NIT would be nice. this team needs to practice about 100 hours a week. too bad the ncaa’s won’t allow it. the point of my post is more to illustrate my feelings on the team. to date, they don’t deserve any postseason play. considering and unfair bidding process, i’m not getting too excited either way with that outcome.

  14. Wolfy__79 02/23/2010 at 12:36 PM #

“lose support from our fanbase.” we’ll be back, we always are.

  15. VaWolf82 02/23/2010 at 12:38 PM #

The last time we entered a season with the BB coach on the hot seat was the ’01-’02 season. Even the talking heads on ESPN were saying that “this could be Herb’s last chance.” Even though that year started State’s run of NCAAT appearances, the next two recruiting classes were horrible with alot of kids that didn’t belong at major Div 1 programs….and four of six kids transferred.

Was this just a coincidence or cause/effect? How does the commitment list for the 2011 freshman class look?

  16. VaWolf82 02/23/2010 at 12:40 PM #

Sid got a six-year contract when he was first hired and he got a one-year extension in 2007. I don’t know if he has gotten more extensions or not…but next year is definitely not the last on his contract.

  17. happypackdad 02/23/2010 at 2:10 PM #

    “5. N.C. STATE — Julius Hodge (9), Levi Watkins (46), Josh Powell (70), Jordan Collins (122), Ilian Evtimov (261). ”

I think next year’s class will have a bigger impact with two 5* and one 4* recruits coming in. Also Levi’s injury & Powell’s early exit hurt us a lot.

  18. Rochester 02/23/2010 at 2:20 PM #

Levi’s injury & Powell’s early exit hurt us a lot.

This is why it’s hard to put all the eggs in the recruits basket. Guys can get hurt, leave early, fail to qualify, etc.

Keeping Sid just to keep these recruits reminds me of the old saying, “Give a man a good recruiting class and you feed him for a day. Teach him how to coach, and he will eat for a lifetime.”

  19. happypackdad 02/23/2010 at 2:24 PM #

Barring injury this has the potential to be the best backcourt NCSU has had since Fire & Ice. Have to give Sid the opportunity to coach with these guys.

  20. Wolfy__79 02/23/2010 at 4:43 PM #

yeap, vawolf.. i don’t know the details of his contract or extensions. with a 6th or 7th season there would have to be definite results for him to stay.. just seeing his expression in the pic with horner says alot to me. and he sounded genuinely excited after the game. no numbers to back that up, i just think his satisfaction tell us he’s not just riding the gravy train. but we have to have results. …

  21. Wolfy__79 02/23/2010 at 4:57 PM #

i totally agree that he will have to provide us with solid recruiting following the 2010 class. for 2011, right now i think we only have uchebo… whom i like alot from what i’ve seen. there has to be a point of emphasis on guard next year to add depth to that position for 2011- 2012! that will tell me alot, if we land some talent to develope there.. well that and a NCAA appearance/run.. and also contend at the top of the ACC. injuries at guard next year could very well sink sid’s ship. however, i’m not planning on them so i won’t speculate on someone’s job on that chance.

as far as josh powell, this had more to do with HWSNBN and his inablity to keep him around. that was smoketek’s failure as a coach. let’s see if sid can hold onto tracy.. that would be a good indicator on that subject. ^^^, neither of these two were guards either. it was also a part of smoketek’s job to hold on to recruits and bring them in. he did neither despite the hodge class. and although i thoroughly enjoyed bethel, atsur, sherril and co. i often felt that they would be better under a different system.

with additional 2011 recruits, NCSU is still not an attractive option. hell, probably half of the fan base wants SL’s head. that alone doesn’t look good.. i believe as next year unfolds his recruits will come out of the woodworks, one thing he does well is finding talent ahead of some of the leading programs, he’s not a name whore either. that part, i like about him.. and we get harrow as a result, would have had wall if it weren’t for kentoochie’s bank roll… but don’t yawl think he’s got an uncanny eye for talent?

  22. pakmannfay 02/23/2010 at 7:00 PM #

Fmack, so will you defend Sid when we have another miserable season. He has the worst winning percentage of any coach in the history of NC State, and never has coached a winner. Even with the right pieces, someone has to put them together. Why do we have to be so generous, and give him another year. I don’t need that kind of punishment. The Tarholes are down this year (one year), but you bet they’ll be back next year. When is the last time we have been up? Too long to remember. There are lots of great coaches out there, if we had the right AD who knew how to bring them here. Sidney will never succeed as a head coach. Whittenburg already lost his job a few games into the season @ Fordham. How long do we continue the agony. I guess I will have to follow the women’s team, their first year coach has already surpassed Sidney’s first year. I guess you enjoy hanging out in the cellar. Not me!

  23. Rochester 02/23/2010 at 7:03 PM #

don’t yawl think he’s got an uncanny eye for talent?

Anyone who could spot Julius Mays and CJ Williams has an uncanny eye for talent, indeed. And then to outhustle the rest of the ACC for their services. Ooh, man. Uncanny.

  24. Wolfy__79 02/23/2010 at 7:39 PM #

haha, i wasn’t really referring to cj or mays. i was talking about harrow, wall, tracy, wood, howell, cothron, leslie… those guys. i think they’ll end up being pretty solid NCSU/ACC caliber players. cj was an attractive in state player coming in. i don’t know what the deal is with him. so i assume the answer to my question would be sarcasm and no? maybe a better answer would have been: no, sidney has some good looking incoming recruits.. some decent young talent on the bench. but his inability to get a point guard here shows his lack of recruiting ability. or 2, sure he has a good eye but he hasn’t been able to lock in the big time recruits. or 3, yeah he’s got a really good looking class coming in and shown consistent vision with top recruits for the past three years while failing to get a working guard to keep it steady until they arrive. no, i’ll just be sarcastic…
