After finding multiple ways to lose leads and playing inconsistent basketball for much of the last month, NC State finally finished a game against Wake Forest Saturday, picking up a 14-point victory after dropping seven straight conference games.

NC State forced 23 Wake Forest turnovers (15 in the first half) and held down Ish Smith, forcing the senior guard to commit five turnovers and holding him to 12 points. Al-Farouq Aminu and Chas McFarland committed six turnovers each. The Wolfpack was able to score 18 points off those 23 turnovers.

“I congratulate NC State,” Wake Forest coach Dino Gaudio said. “I thought they played very well. They came out and set a certain tone and we didn’t adjust. Our offense put way too much pressure on our defense today. We held them to 40% but we had 15 turnovers in one half.”

Sidney Lowe said NC State’s transition defense, which only allowed eight fast break points, was key to shutting down the Wake Forest offense.

“If you allow them to run on you, they’re going to beat you. Their bigs run the floor very well. You have to stop the transition offense and we did a good job of that. We had deflections and were diving for the ball. As far as that aspect it’s probably the best defensive game we’ve played. Our kids were committed and it showed.”

Five players scored in double figures and the Wolfpack went 6 of 12 from behind the arc after struggling to make shots during the last seven games. CJ Williams came off the bench and poured in 12 points, hitting two three-pointers in a tw0-minute stretch to keep NC State’s lead above 10 points.

Williams, who has struggled throughout the year, said he’s continued to work hard.

“All week in practice I’ve been working on my shot and working on getting my confidence back and I was able to continue to shoot the ball,” Williams said. “Coach had confidence in me and I know if he has confidence in me I have to have confidence in myself.”

Lowe also credited Williams, among others, for being more verbal on the court and in the locker room, something he said helped NC State to reverting to the bad habits its developed during its losing streak.

“We were more energetic coming out,” Williams said. “Sometimes we were a little dead coming out of halftime. Guys were talking in the locker room and it kept us all focused on what we wanted to do. We all just stayed positive.”

Wake Forest shot 0 for 12 from behind the arc, something that hadn’t happened for the Deacons in 575 games. The last time an NC State opponent didn’t make a three-pointer was in 1990, when Maryland failed to do so.

Dennis Horner picked up his third double-double in the last four ball games, scoring 10 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Horner, who had never recorded a double-double before the Virginia Tech game Feb. 10.

Despite Horner’s performance on the glass, Wake Forest out-rebounded NC State 50-31 and pulled down 27 offensive boards (8 by Aminu). However, the Deacons could only manage 19 second chance points on those opportunities.

“They got on me about rebounding, because I’m not going to lie, I wasn’t rebounding,” Horner said. “They sat me down and talked to me about it, I took it to heart and I wasn’t going to let that stop me from playing so I’m coming out here tonight and trying to get as many rebounds as I can. ”

Tracy Smith led NC State with 14 points. Javi Gonzalez scored 11 points and dished out six assists while only turning the ball over twice. The Wolfpack had 15 turnovers but Wake Forest was only able to manage seven points off those miscues.

Senior guard Farnold Degand (13 points) said the win couldn’t have come at a better time for a team which had found so many ways to lose games during the last month.

“We’re more relieved than anything,” he said. “The last couple weeks we’ve been fighting and come out short on a few games. To pull it out today felt great.”

the way i see it. there were two teams on the court yesterday.. the winner and the loser. we WON. not the competition outsucked us. i’d rather be a little more positive. or maybe, a this team is a blue collar type of team, ugly wins still go in the right side of the column. not crediting an instate rival for having an OFF game? cmon man!

and props to coach odom for giving the WOLFPACK faithful some love for being an outstanding fan base. did anyone else catch that?! there were alot of good things said by the announcers!

I’ll file this one under the “even a blind hog finds a mushroom once in a while” category. Given that our greatest area of struggle is against the other BAD teams in the conference, I find it sort of amusing that some of you are taking hope from the fact that two of our three remaining games (that we must win to make the NIT) are against the same sort of bad teams we’ve been mailing it in against all year.

Given what we’ve seen from this team all year (lack of consistent effort) I fully expect us to WIN against Virginia Tech, then lose at Miami and at home vs. BC and miss the NIT by one game.

  4. Wolfy__79 02/22/2010 at 11:07 AM #

    again, remaining schedule:

at miami! at vt! bc at rbc!

i don’t take any hope from 1 ACC win out of 8 contests! however, i am trying to enjoy a week until our next game AT MIAMI!!.. i’m pretty sure all the posters here realize where the team is in response to our record! some of us are just trying to enjoy what’s left of the season.

it’s not time right now to discuss whether or not we make the NIT. there is still some bball to be played!

I don’t buy this. It certainly is the time to discuss what a team has to do to reach postseason play…we’re in the last two weeks of the season! Every other team in the country with a shot at postseason play is discussing what they need to do to get in…

actually it’s pretty clear for this team…they need to win two of the three remaining games. It was clear to me at the beginning of the season that (given the schedule) there was the potential for a mini-surge at the end of the year–at the time, I was hoping it might position us for an NCAA bid. As it turns out, January and February were just too atrocious, but given how bad we looked at times this year, winning two of three to get an NIT bid would be a fine result for this team. (not to be confused with my assessment of the overall state of the program, which is decidedly NOT “fine”)

This is their first win against a good team where they did not have to rely on lights out shooting. Their defense was good I thought. Good teams play good defense no matter what and you can stay in a lot of games no matter how poorly you’re shooting if you can play good defense. Horner gettin big on the boards was big too.
Although they didn’t shoot lights out, they hit timely shots. CJ and Farnold hitting those 3’s was huge. With that line-up that they use sometimes, typically there are ZERO shooters that the defense has to worry about and the other team can play in tight and deny the dribble penetration and collapse on T. Smith. Having them as a shooting threat could really help them out. Good game. Good win.

classof89- what about the incoming class of recruits is “not fine”???
I happen to think they’ll serve the same exact purpose that one Julius Hodge did for our STRUGGLING program.

It was a nice win, but lets not get carried away with the NIT talk, as if that’s even a tournament we want to be going to. We were 16-14 with a 6-10 ACC record last year and didn’t get invited. We’re 15-13 with a 3-10 record now. I don’t see us making the NIT with fewer than 20 wins, which means we’d need to win our last three games and then take at least two in the ACCT. Considering we just broke a seven-game ACC losing streak I’m not sure I see us reeling off six straight wins.

Call me a hater, I guess, or pass whatever the rest of you guys are drinking.

Not trying to rain on the parade, but WF stunk it up royally…maybe worst game of the year for them. They played very State-like. I still have 0 expectations for the remaining games. You can say I’m a negative fan, but I’m just realistic.

  10. fullmoon1 02/22/2010 at 12:53 PM #

Coach13, I would add that Wake’s poor play did not happen in a vacuum. It was a direct result of solid defense.

  11. VaWolf82 02/22/2010 at 1:15 PM #

I really wish that I could have watched the WF game because I haven’t seen State play “solid defense” in any of the other ACC games this year.

“I happen to think they’ll serve the same exact purpose that one Julius Hodge did for our STRUGGLING program.”

What is it, exactly, that you think Jules did for our program?

  13. packfan03 02/22/2010 at 2:08 PM #

    ^Seriously?

He’s the only reason we went to the NCAA tournament during HIS four years.

  14. TOB4PREZ 02/22/2010 at 2:45 PM #

“What is it, exactly, that you think Jules did for our program?”

    ———————————————————————–

LOL, he merely ended Herb’s six season streak of being 6-10 or worse in conference play and carried them to the big dance.
    that’s all.
just like next year’s recruits will save Lowe’s job and return tMighty Pack back to the big dance.

  15. tjfoose2 02/22/2010 at 2:50 PM #

    Yes, seriously.

I like Jules as much as everybody… best player we had while he was here… but I wouldn’t call him a program savior, and he certainly wasn’t the ONLY reason we went to the NCAA’s.

What Jules did do was help raise up a struggling program from horrible to mediocre. If that’s the height of your expectations, then I’d agree there’s a pretty good chance the next recruiting class will help meet them.

When added to the young talent currently on the roster, I, for one, would expect much more from next year’s recruiting class, assuming all those committed do enroll. Anything less would be an indictment of your opinions of the coaching staff.

  16. TOB4PREZ 02/22/2010 at 2:55 PM #

I love how some like to say that with Herb our team was at least showing improvement each year (while implying that Sid’s teams are backing up)…. do these folks not understand the FACT that Herb’s 5th season was WORSE than his 4th in the sense that we did not get invited to post-season play because we went from being a 20 game winner to a 13 game winner???? He clearly and OVERTLY was saved by one recruiting class, the difference is, Sid’s job saving class is coming in his 5th year at the helm as opposed to Herb’s coming in his SIXTH year as the boss.
Herb reached his ceiling, and not many of us were happy with said limits, but Sid is just about to start climbing…… get out your oxygen tanks!

  17. coachkoh 02/22/2010 at 2:58 PM #

Solid De? A win is a win you should leave it at that . It was not like Wake did not get any shots they got plenty they just did not hit them .

  18. TOB4PREZ 02/22/2010 at 3:11 PM #

“Solid De? A win is a win you should leave it at that.”
    —————————————————————

you should also give credit where credit is due, and holding them to nearly 20pts below their season average and forcing them to turn the ball over 23 times… the defense seems as good a place as any to start.

  19. Wolfy__79 02/22/2010 at 5:42 PM #

i was happy with the defense… it turned out a win. it can definetly be improved, but if this is a start… it’s not a bad one.

hodge definetly made a saving impact for smoketek. i was at the point where i was totally disinterested with state basketball. then i watch a december game and see him play, WOW. i enjoyed every bit of it, also loved watching marcus melvin play. those players made the princeton offense somewhat enjoyable. accept getting dunked on by unx like little girls! hell, i find it laughable that our core offense was only a small part of duke’s attack. i never understood why he wouldn’t incroporate a more flexible approach… the team would have been so much better. i’m glad we’re well past that nonsense!

vawolf, you ought to check the replay.. i didn’t catch the live one either. what you’ll see is more hustle throughout the game. nothing will blow you away, but it was good for me to see the winning effort!

given the entire season. i don’t have any postseason expectations (nit). we just haven’t had enough wins at this point. there are things to consider including the last three matchups and the ACC tourney. but at this point, i don’t want this NC STATE team in the NIT. it would be a waste. nit teams are pissed off and hungry. so IMHO, i haven’t seen the pissed off and hungry version of this NC STATE team yet. hope to see them soon!

So let’s not give Sid the coach of the year award. How do we beat Duke, Wake @ home, and FSU on the road, and lose the rest. Poor coaching. We have talent to win with, but Sid will never make us winners. New recruits coming next year is only a temporary fix, if they even stay for more than a year. Valvano knew how to win with what he had, and somehow Sidney just didn’t quite learn how to do that, and if we want success with the men’s basketball for years to come, we must replace Sid. Our record is embarrassing, and Lee Fowler doesn’t even care, just as long as he gets a paycheck. They both need to be replaced. We haven’t finished losing, and I can’t stand the thought of losing to the Tarholes 3xs.

  21. 61Packer 02/22/2010 at 8:38 PM #

I’ve heard a lot of talk about the recruits coming in next season. Just exactly who is coming in, and what kind of an impact will they make on this present team minus Horner and Degand?

  22. fmack 02/22/2010 at 9:06 PM #

pakmannfay – I’m just starting to post on this site, but let me tell you why I was compelled to do so to begin with. It’s because as a fan base we’re too quick to call for the a change of this coach. I’ve become a little frustrated with the quick-to-sacrifice the coach attitude that I’ve seen on here. But before you blow a gasket on this let me say that I have on more than one occasion thought we run Sid out – but then I realize that in order to build a strong anything you have to dig a deep enough foundation in order to build a model program and that simply takes time – no other way around it.
And if we ran Sid off who could we get to come in and take this program over? Think about it. Before we let our emotions get the best of us.
I want to see us win more than anybody! The barbershop has been brutal for me for so long. I’m tired of the losing but I also know that if we keep changing coaches we get NOWHERE fast!
The team that played WF was a good defensive team – at least for that game. I think we can duplicate that effort.
61packer: I think you only have to see Ryan Harrow and Lorenzo Brown play or look at them on youtube to know that we’re starting something here at NCState that is going to be something good.
Last thing I’ll say about the recruiting is we really need to look at some athletic bigs for this program. We need some beasts. Does anybody know where we can find some?

  23. Wolfy__79 02/22/2010 at 11:23 PM #

it’s down right wrong to compare sid and valvano! mainly b/c jimmy v took over an NC STATE program that was near to its peak while sid gets handed a passed over job with no recruits to mention and no college ties! it’s not fair to either one!! totally different scenarios.

  24. Wolfy__79 02/22/2010 at 11:28 PM #

    with degand and horner exiting, i don’t feel that we’re losing anything on the roster. we’ve got good depth at forward, and we could afford to make a couple more guard scholarships available for recruiting. i’m pretty sure we’ll have the incoming class for a couple of years worst case scenario. they’ll need work, there’s a very short list of 1 yr players nowadays. guards can stand to stay a little longer. felton stayed at unx for three didn’t he? cothron will need two maybe three. howell should be around for his jr year. painter too. uchebo will be here three years. cj leslie needs to be in school for 2-3 years. from this point on i don’t really see a problem with the forecasted recruits filling the gaps on the roster… ha, are the growing pains almost over. (;

  25. Wolfy__79 02/22/2010 at 11:31 PM #

i think we’ll have wood for four years? mays, definetly. so next year i expect to see the coaches recruit pretty hard for guards to replace javi and groom a four year backup and successor to harrow.
